  1. Isn't is pathetic that such clubs are still stuck in a time warp? About time they pull their head out of the sand and start reading and learning a thing or two! So many dogs having to suffer auto immune diseases simply because of sheer ignorance!
  2. I disagree. A crossbred litter from two pure bred parents result in uniformity amongst the litter mates which means that all the pups look exactly alike except colour, which of course applies to purebreds as well. The only time you get pups with different coat textures is when one or both of its parents are crossbred.
  3. Eggs are great for dogs and especially scrambled eggs. What you must never do is feed raw eggs as the white of an egg contains an enzyme called avidin; this decreases the absorption of biotin (a B vitamin). Cooked eggs are great. I'd be questioning the source of this - many RAW feeders will say they feed raw egg, with shell on a regular basis. To my knowledge, some RAW feeders (and I personally believe in the RAW way of life for dogs) may choose to give their dog a raw egg once or twice a week and no more. Why give an animal something that binds BIOTIN and makes it inaccessible? this can only result in a dog with a scruffy coat. Once a week will not prove to be of detriment but any more than that would be foolish unless the dog is supplied an abundance of biotin to make up for it and that would defeat the purpose of giving a dog a raw egg ?? Symptoms of biotin deficiency include dermatitis, a dry scruffy coat, etc etc. It isn't hard work to boil up some eggs, is there?
  4. No need to vaccinate her at all; she has obviously had her puppy shots and yearly boosters so she has enough protection to last her for a lifetime; unless you need to board her I would not vaccinate her ever again. If you do an online search on the negative side effects of vaccinating every year you should be convinced that your dog will be far far healthier for it if she never gets immunised again.

  6. Funny that, lol. The man wears glasses all the time. The very one who commented that it was cruel to keep Chrystal alive!
  7. Her eyes were removed a week after she lost her sight for the very reason that you mentioned. They were told by the local vet that glaucoma is painful and hence she was booked in for surgery as soon as was possible. I remember the owners being really upset about it all but they knew they were doing the right thing by their beloved Chrystal.
  8. I wish I'd had the choice to Euth my husky. She was my heart dog. We were training in the yard. I was a bit of a spaz and managed to drop the leash. She ran. I followed her up the street from a distance. I didn't want to encourage a game of chasey. I lost sight of her, thought she went into a yard. So i ran into 3 peoples yards. She wasn't in any of them. Up ahead I saw a green car following her. She was clearly scared and trying to escape the threatening car. I got to the side of the road, just in time to watch her run across the road. I watched in horror as a speeding truck ran over her head. She came out ok, somehow. Screaming like all hell. I ran over to her. She could still walk, despite wobbling. But she was bleeding from head wounds. Some kind stranger rushed us to the after hours vet. The vet said she looked fine and should make it through the night. But she died of internal bleeding. Had I have known that her chances were grim I would have had her Euthed and been there for her final minutes. Her last memories were of strangers and being caged up. OMG, what a nightmare you have gone through. So sorry.
  9. Thanks for that link, Mollie10. That is just so touching, bless Rachelle for being the person that she is.
  10. So the neighbours know more than hundreds of people who breed, own and interact with dogs on a daily basis? I don't think they'd be my friends anymore. I'd suggest to your neighbours that they should find some new friends. DITTO ! That is exactly what I said but they have known each other for donkeys and apparently they are good people aside from the fact that they are not doggy people ! I don't tend to have too much time for people who unable to show compassion towards animals.
  11. I have told my neighbours about this thread and they read it themselves on their own computer; they then mentioned this to their friends and the comment they were given in return was that it would be expected to receive such a reaction from a dog forum which constitutes "dog lovers." So, is that to say that they themselves (neighbour's friends) are not dog lovers?
  12. I agree; an aussie shepherd would be ideal. They're clever, easy to train, obedient and would love an active lifestyle.
  13. How is Ramses today? Hope his over expanded tummy has settled. Has the wind current settled also?
  14. WOW, Your photos are absolutely beautiful.
  15. Good for you Anne. Your little boy is just so lucky to have you as an owner. Kudos to everyone who responded here and especially so to those of you who have a blind pet or two. You are amazing people for sticking by them.
  16. Thank you so much everyone I will speak to my neighbours tomorrow and will be showing them this thread and they in turn can show their "friends" and put them in their rightful place! I see this sibe almost every day and I know how happy she is. Long live Chrystal.
  17. My neighbour owns a blind siberian husky that has been blind for the last 2 years. They purchased her when she was 8 wks old. She developed glaucoma in one eye and, to cut a long story short, she was given special drops to delay the onset of glaucoma but as time went by blindness set in. She was gloomy at first and did not want to eat but has now settled in a world of darkness and is a happy chappy or should I say, damsel. She eats, walks herself and is healthy. When I visit my neighbours I can see that she is indeed a happy dog and is also very playful, she really knows her way around. The owners love her to death. I was speaking to them yesterday and they were disappointed as a visitor had said that they felt they were being cruel by keeping her alive and that she should be put to sleep; they vehemently disagree with this and said that she will continue her life for as long as she is happy and otherwise healthy, I concur. I would never put down a dog simply because of its blindness. What do you think?
  18. I would have thought that some "evacuation" would have taken place this morning after the night before especially when it comes to dry food. Do not withhold water, whatever you do. I would be ringing a vet or two (given that I am partial to a 2nd opinion) and ask for advice. I would think that they would suggest the same. Dry food without water can be lethal. I really don't think that labs are as predisposed to bloat as, say a, great dane or a dobe.
  19. You're doing it again I genuinely and stupidly thought that BSL was only a law which worked towards eradication of certain breeds of dogs hence why I was adamant that I was not advocating BSL.
  20. Actually, technically, BSL is "breed specific legislation", so if you think that legislation should be different for different breeds of dog, then you support BSL. BSL isn't just about eradicating breeds. It means there will be laws specific to certain breeds. Well, honestly speaking Staranais, I really thought that BSL was all about eradicating certain breeds of dogs especially given what had taken place in QLD where pet staffies were being ceased and destroyed even though they didn't commit any wrong doing. I was tears when reading that such things were taking place. I am all for ensuring that no more bloodshed is to take place and no owner should have to go through the nightmare of finding one's pet/s mauled by other dogs. Does that make me such a malicious person? Yes, eradicating dog breeds is IMO certainly the worst aspect of BSL. But any legislation relating to breeds is technically BSL. So you can understand why people were getting rather confused when you were saying you didn't support BSL, but that you did want some breeds to be treated differently. Personally, I can understand why some people think larger or more powerful breeds should have different laws surrounding them. There is no argument that a high drive or large dog is more likely to hurt someone than a tiny or placid dog is. I don't think it's the right answer, but I can see why some people think it is. Thank you for explaining Staranais.

  22. Gotta love them shelties. They are indeed not only beautiful to look at but also unbelievably intelligent. Just as lovemesideways said - WE DEMAND A PHOTO OR TWO OR THREE!
  23. The breed of dogs that kill is of consequence and should not be discarded. Yes, these dogs did manage to get out due to an irresponsible owner and set out on a killing spree, it was the dogs' decision to kill! How they managed to get into the other property, I have no idea but they obviously heard the barking of those poor chihuahuas and thought all their birthdays had come at once. How many cavaliers or westies out there set out on a rampage and killed other people's pets????? This prick now owns 4 of those animals, pfft pathetic country we live in. You speak about these dogs as if they were humans, "thought all their birthdays had come at once" ?? Yeah, ok, sure that's what they thought "Set out on a killing spree" ?? Emotive enough?? You say you don't advocate BSL, and then in your next sentence you ADVOCATE BSL?! LOL. My saying "all their birthdays had come at once" is only a figure of speech and only goes to say that whilst the dogs were committing the deed they were obviously enjoying every bloodied moment. As for my saying "set out on a killing spree" what I meant to say was that upon hearing the chihuahuas bark, that was the defining moment when those dogs had only one thing in mind and that is to kill hence why they entered the property. I am not saying, by any means, that these dogs formed a convention in which they had some spiritual heart to heart and planned how to best spend their afternoon. In saying that I believe that certain breeds of dogs and especially so a pack of staffies should be owned by someone that can ensure 100% that they cannot ever get out is not supporting BSL. If I was a supporter of BSL I would have clearly said that staffies and their crosses should be eradicated altogether and I do not believe in that stance under no circumstance.
