  1. Hmmmmm......... they do lick their butts
  2. Ideally to carry out house checks when rehoming a dog or selling puppies is great but how does a breeder manage to do so or does this take place at all or is it considered unecessary?? What happens if you find a "suitable" home and it happens to be interstate? or perhaps in the same state but a fair distance away? I believe that some shelters do this but I have always wondered how this is possible given the distance in alot of case.....
  3. If they cannot even manage to pay for vaccinations and desexing.....can they actually afford to pay for food? or will the dog have to go without here and there? I know that if I were breeding I would want to know as much as possible about a new home for the puppies that I would be bringing into the world. As others have said....perhaps the breeder in this case may prove grateful or the complete opposite....but at least you have done your bit, here's hoping that the breeder in question will keep the information to her/himself and not repeat what they are told...
  4. Absolutely horrifying. Doesn't the RSPCA get subsidies from the government for every dog that is put down?? I don't think too highly of them as it is and I think that reality speaks for itself...this is not a case of "scaremongering."
  5. Steve, I am confused although I must say that I didnt read each and every line but it seems that you are saying that pushing to have puppy farmers eradicated indicates that all breeders will encounter difficulties yet on your post above you are saying to push for a ban on puppy factories????
  6. Temperament is most certainly genetic and any dog showing aggression esp towards people should NOT be bred from and should be desexed.
  7. You're just trying to have an argument with me because you have an issue with my parents (yes I wont forget that in a hurry, Moselle). The OP asked a question based on her own dog, not what opinions were about debarking - some people answered it. Let's stick to that, shall we. Raz, the fact of the matter is that I am noticing that you are in the habit of twisting the truth....this has nothing but NOTHING to do with your parents at all! They're not doing the talking, you are. I know that you gave me a torrid time and accused me unjustly and it is unfortunate that you are doing the very same thing right here in this thread. Fair crack of a whip, hey???
  8. Thanks. That was me. I had no idea that happened. I'm with poodlefan, though. You've lumped someone in suburbia in with a pupper miller even if you didnt mean to. It's actually good that you're walking because you're not adding anything to the conversation although I do thank you for answering my question. TW did not make any connotations whatsoever between the OP and puppy millers. How is it that some people will totally twist and turn everything simply to win an argument ??? Hardly fair, is it???? At the end of the day, people are entitled to their opinion! If TW does not agree with debarking then it is entirely her prerogative, she is not exactly a law unto herself.....If people want to get on their soap box then perhaps a change of direction is called for.....RING THE RSPCA who are entirely responsible for making it hard to have one's dog debarked !!! Having having said this....I do think it is silly to expect people to drug themselves in order to make themselves impervious to dogs barking, I dont see why I should have to become a medicine cabinet in order to deafen an incessant dog's bark, lol.
  9. You do have admirable traits TW but unfortunately not everyone is lucky enough to share those traits, not everyone is capable of simply rolling over with a pillow over one's head, lol. The way I look at it is that debarking would have to beat putting a dog down....you will find that the majority of people have exhausted every other avenue before resorting to debarking. I know for one that I have and nothing.....NOTHING has worked. I have one choice....put the dog down or debark it....I know that I would opt to have her debarked any day rather than have her put down and in fact am looking into this matter right now. I don't see why it's an issue if the surgery is conducted by a veterinarian ??? To hell with the RSPCA for making it so darn hard for pet owners wanting to do this....how many more dogs are discarded because of this....not every person is willing to exhaust every other avenue first before considering debarking.
  10. Oh dear.....TW...perhaps it wouldnt be such a bad idea if you delete this post of yours as it will inevitably plant ideas in the not so loving pet owner, nothing surprises me about people any more. I will then edit this post and remove yours.
  11. I totally agree. I didnt know whether to laugh or scratch my head. How's the OP going - any update on whether you could get your paperwork? always leaves me thinking thats their way of saying SHUT UP! dont u think? i bought one of those collars recently, ummm does last year equate with recently . have a young dog that likes the sound of his own voice at the moment, the one that sprays "Dynavet" when he barks. had a wonderful week he finally got the idea. soft wuff n all ok. well he discovered it runs out didnt he? WUFF back with a vengence n im refilling it every 3 days, dont think its annoying him too much. sooo out with the rolled newspaper and much angry posturing n he finally decided hysterical uman aint getting him pats so has the message, peace reigns again. n now have a second hand collar stashed in the cupboard MMM, it is a never ending quest to replace the spray (which is not cheap) and the batteries! Been there, done that; some dogs just dont give a flying flute about the spray at all. Next was the shock collar and even that is proving a battle. My mind is firmly made up to have her debarked, it's a case of finding a vet that will do it and the time to organize it and take her to such a vet. This is one dog that barks at a fly farting.....
  12. What a sad state of affairs ! Insidiuous individuals who can inflict such pain and cruelty on animals most definitely deserve a jail sentence, no excuses entered into !!!
  13. As most people have said, it is the opportunity of a lifetime....too good to pass up really. If you feel that your parents are not going to put in as much effort as you have with his fear aggression I would be looking for a home in which I would be 100% certain that the new owners will ensure that he will be properly supervised. I couldnt live with the doubt....it is a hard decision though and I would be debating the issue a hundred times before finally making up my mind. Perhaps if you could find someone that is willing to foster him for the two years that you are going to be away and then hand him back ????
  14. Alls well that ends well. I can understand your OH trying to keep the chocolate away from you as I have the same problem although I could give the rum & raisin a miss! lol Is there any food that cavaliers don't like? they are such little vacuum cleaners.
  15. I disapprove of dogs in the back of utes for the reasons outlined above. I agree with dogs being in the back of utes with a hard canopy though. What gives me the shits is seeing a dog at the back of a ute parked in full sun on 35+ degree heat and to top it off seeing that the passenger seat could well have accommodated the dog but instead it is thrown at the back like a sack of potatoes.
  16. I would take the dog to the vet and ask for a protein/creatinine test to ensure that the kidneys are functioning properly. It would be good to know if any damage has taken place after this incident. Dogs don't show any sign of kidney damage until 90% of kidney function is affected so even though your dog may not yet show any signs of kidney problems does not necessarily indicate that he has escaped the damage. Good luck, hope that all is okay.
  17. Vile creatures most certainly do deserve "an eye for an eye" treatment, no ifs or buts!
  18. I am sure all will transpire greatly with Barney and before you know it he will be beside you yet again. He is doing well at 16, still able to accompany you on your 45 min walk, many more long walks yet to come
  19. I found your post to be contradictory. You are saying that your father hated the killing so he used to hire a butcher yet by the same token you are saying that you have watched him slit the throat of sheep ????? And I must say that I find it apalling that your father would allow you (as a kid) to shoot animals!!!
  20. actually a butcher is not qualified to kill an animal. A slaughterman is. Butchers only know how to carve up the meat into cuts and joints. As for qualification ... I kill the animals in the manner prescribed. I did animal anatomy at university so I know exactly how to kill different species. Even commercial rabbits have their necks broken. How different is it to what I do? Do you think everyone who has done a short course is a better person then I am to kill an animal? To many it is a job, to me it is something I go out and want to do. I spend a LOT of money on our ferrets. They get fresh raw meaty bones, premium brand kitten food, straw to sleep in, new cages, play time every day all over the garage, toys etc. I exercise them in the off season to keep them healthy and mentally happy. When one of the young ones got sick I nursed it inside, syringed my special formula down its throat every 15 minutes and warmed it under a heat lamp. I didnt sleep until I knew he was OK and he lived. Suppose none of that really matters when you have preconceived notions. By the way I dont use a gun. I kill with my hands and it is quick. Rabbits, fish, ducks, chickens etc. Done very quickly. When I did my own ducks they didnt even flap I had them stunned before their throats were slit. Considering how expensive a hobby it can be really I dont see where it is a quick fix or a chest beating exercise. I dont mind you adding to this thread Polecatty nice to see some more ferreters! They're becoming a rare breed! We found that placing immature ferrets in with the older ones worked, by the time they were secually mature they all just got along. Ours have the odd scrap but no one has ever fought to the death. Our little female was dragging our big boy around the garage last night by his scruff because he was ignoring her super spastic play time As for biting, we get well handled young ones and handle them a lot. If a ferret bites me too hard it gets a flick on the nose, if they latch on a smack. Guy who bred ours had some that bit so hard the only way was to stick a lit cigarette under thier noses until the smoke got to them :p a bit much. It's easier just to teach them to be gentle and all ours will eat out of your hands as well with no problems. As for the kamikazi ferrets ... OH got one the other day, climbed up the top of the cage and flew at him with all four legs out ... I'm sure I could hear a tiny little scream of BANZAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII! You raised an interesting point. So butchers are not qualified to slaughter animals.....so then why is it okay for every Joan, Liz and Kerry to do so? Shouldn't be allowed, IMO. Makes me grimace at the thought that some woman (or man) with no clue whatsoever makes an attempt to kill an animal. That ex friend of mine went about killing her pet ducks with a pair of scissors.....they were once her pets and she decided to make a meal of them simply because she ran out of money to buy food! What a sorry excuse for a human being she was. yep she sure does, reminds me of a friend , we had water for dinner, while the kids had half an apple each. that was all the food there was in the house. hubby had used all of it on his new speed boat. wife n kids food??? not on his horizon sure have a nice way with words dont u This ex friend of mine was concerned with her own appetite, she doesnt have kids to feed nor a husband with a passion for speed boats (she was single); she didn't object to spending time at the pokies though...she didn't have an addiction to gambling....she just met up with some people one weekend and decided to spend every dime (from Centrelink) on this one occasion until hunger got the better of her and given that she likes her meat wayyyy too much decided to grab a pair of scissors before cutting her pet ducks' throat. And here you are saying that I have a nice way with words???? that is not what you said. go reread your own posts before getting back up into the saddle What are you talking about now? this is too exhausting, I have said more than enough and as per usual things are totally blown out of context. I didn't mention, at first, the entirety of my ex friend's why's and why not's.....didn't think it mattered at first....perhaps I should have been more detailed but I simply couldnt be bothered in having to explain every sordid detail of how she set about killing her ducks and why. Lets just agree to disagree and move on to the oh so interesting subject of killing bunnies, shall we?
  21. What exactly are you saying asal? what motives could I possibly have in saying what I have been saying all along? I thought I made my point loud and clear by now, no hidden motive here. I disagree in that people should be allowed free reign! That is why there are laws in place. Where would we be if everyone was allowed to do whatever they wanted? At the end of the day, I cannot change the world being what it is but that doesn't take away the fact that I am entitled to an opinion. We are not robots and this forum especially is full of opinionated people. I dont see what I am supposed to have said that so offended you???

  23. When you say that you kill steers there now.....do you mean the women are doing the killing? and if so, what method of slaughter is adopted? I know that some women during the depression killed animals but that doesn't entail each and every woman, right? Btw, the family need not starve DW....due to lack of meat....we humans can very well survive without it, it has more to do with the palate than anything else. gee moselle, get of your high horse. u know u can get hurt if it bucks n drops u Yes, it is a lonely ride, lol.....amazing and quite an eye opener.....women have no qualms in coming forwards and admitting to killing their own meat....yet the very ones who don't believe in it simply don't have the intestinal fortitude to express their views here, too afraid to be shot down in flames, lol :p
