  1. Thanks to both of you :-) Piper, I agree, I don't think sheep unless kept shorn all year round would do very well here! But yeah, cattle, ducks or goats would still be ideal :) Kavik, thank you very much, but Nobby is extremely far away, but thank you :)
  2. wow this really boils my blood...just leaving the scene when it's your responsibility, that's absaloutly outrageous. I hope the offenders get caught! And as for your friend, I am sorry to hear she had to be victim to this, I hope she heals soon!
  3. thanks :) Yeah a fair fw up here have mentioned they'd love to do it...could make a lot of money out of it! I'd love to get acreage and do it some day, but hey, I'm only 16 I don't plan on moving out anytime soon
  4. Hi everyone! Was unsure where to post this, but was just wondering if there were any dog herding classes or something like that in far north queensland? I am in Cairns but have always wanted to train my australian shepherd to herd either sheep or cattle and have a chance to play arond with it. But living in suburbia obviously I can't :p But is there anyone in the tablelands or inisfail/tully that do this? Thanks in advance :)
  5. I have to agree with everyone who has suggested adult dogs by a means of rescue or ex-show dog. Then you truly know the temperament of your dog. I could go on, but don't want to repeat what has already been said :)
  6. I'd love to get my dogs out for a play :) The off leash beaches here are fantastic! I most likely wouldn't be able to get out for a coffee, but my dogs would appreciate the playtime :)
  7. I'll second a sheltie! I know the shedding isn't great, but clipping is always an option. They're such beautiful little dogs, biddable (like all working dogs, hence why I love the herding group!), not a high prey drive so won't do more than attempt to herd your chooks, and not overly energetic like a jack russel, or my favourite breed, the schipperke. I would love to reccommend a schip, they have no doggy odour, however are very hyperactive and might scare your children. I have heard a lot of people saying schipperkes are little devil dogs, however my boy is an angel, very biddable, listens to everything I say, and doesn't try and kill every small animal in his path...however, I always say he has ADHD, however the hyperactivity is typical of the breed  However in my opinion, the newfoundland or saint bernard, despite their size, are hands down the most wonderful dogs for young children and families. However I do not have the room to accomodate eithr, aww My neighbours had a newfie, she was beautiful!
  8. And here is my contribution to the thread, of my most precious boy as a baby! They Don't Stay Small Forever by All4aBiscuit, on Flickr
  9. Aww this thread makes me so happy ^.^ All so adorable!!
  10. When my gorgeous crossbreed passed on, I decided I wanted to start showing dogs. I was set on getting an ACD, but my parents didn't want one, as the previous dog was an ACD mix. So next up, I liked the Aussies. And so came along Rusty. However as much as I love him, I can't say I'd get another anytime soon...he's not the high-drive dog I thought he'd be...actually quite lazy So now I had Cherry (my staffy mix) and Rusty. I finally convinced the parents to let me get a third dog, but the criterea had to meet the condinitions that it was a small dog, with a relatively short cort. Well the alone cut out my dream of an ACD. Then the coat length cut out the Japanese spitz.I was looking for a dog that was loyal, aloof with strangers, intelligent, and not too yappy. I couldn't find anything, and I had always said I'd never own a schipperke (as a young child i would look through the dog breed books and i thought they looked boring ), but now, I own one who I absaloutely adore! Best dog I've ever come across, intensly loyal. I am now definately hooked on schips, hope to breed them one day However, when I can get a place of my own, I will be straight away getting an ACD ;)
