What Facinations Do Your Dogs Have?
rusty&biscuit replied to Sankari's topic in General Dog Discussion
Ooo, I just remembered the other 2's obssessions! Both the aussie and the schip LOVE water, especially coming out of the hose - they go mad for it, chasing it  And the schip loves flower pots...his favourite toys are his kong stuffing-less teddy, and the flower pot. When I'm gardening he's just waiting there for a new pot  -
Wow, what an amazing holiday! Thank you for sharing the pictures, I really enjoyed going through them :D The dog in the optometrist, thats awesome! All the snow looks so beautiful too! And that wolverine looks like a ferret on roids  The sledding with the dogs would have been amazing! I agree with Krislin that a few of them do look very kelpie-ish. They look like they lead a great life too...all that running they get to do!

Aw so cute, I love the one of her sitting on top of the golden

Aww bless, I want a cuddly whippet!

I agree - I to would be livid if that was my dog being attacked by roaming dogs and I had to wait around for "the right people" to arrived. I think it's unfair to expect police to be experts in canine behavior - they are overstretched already as it is. I would have preferred that the dog was dispatched of more quickly but it's not a perfect world. In the end it comes down to the meancing dogs' owner not being responsible and keeping their dogs contained and if people want to blame someone they should be pointing their fingers at them, not the Police who were just doing their job.

After experiencing the puppy I was looking after (and who I had really bonded with!) at the time being almost mauled by a bull breed, I sure as hell wouldn't hesitate to shoot the thing. If, in some crazy weird scenario, I had a gun or a cop with me at the time, and I had seen the dog running towards her, I would shoot the dog straight up. I don't care if I miss its head and do it inhumanely...I want to keep my dogs alive. If it weren't for my pitbull mix attacking the bull breed, while it was attacking the puppy at the time, I can't even imagine what could've happened. I didn't watch the video so I shouldn't really be commenting on this, but just reading through every single post, I just don't understand how the police officer is in the wrong

What Facinations Do Your Dogs Have?
rusty&biscuit replied to Sankari's topic in General Dog Discussion
My staffy cross Cherry is obssessed with lizards...spends almost the entire day stalking them in the bushes, and in her 11 years has only ever caught 2  The other 2 don't really seem to be facsinated by anything that I can think of off the top of my head -
Back to the original post, I had some children walking on the beach come up to Rusty and start pulling at his tail, the parents just smiling :/ I told the children not to and said to the parents to watch their children, they were annoying half the dogs on the beach. Their response "They need to get bit to learn their lesson" But hey, this is the first time something like this has happened, thankfully. Every other kid says "Can I please pat your dog", which is excellent, I let them do so and thank them for asking :)

I had 3 differnt answers  One sleeps on my bed. One sleeps outside in a crate. And one sleeps outside, not in a crate. :D

Please, this is an internet forum, half of you don't even know each other. Let people have their own opinions and don't scrutinize them for it. After all, there is no burning building and no one knows what will really happen when put into the particular situation ;) Sorry, it's rather off topic...couldn't help myself :)

Wow, amazing shots!!

5 Things Nobody Tells You About Adopting A Dog
rusty&biscuit replied to Jimmay's topic in General Dog Discussion
Haha, excellent article Sad ending though...I am SO glad that adopting a dog is not so hard, at least where I live - talk about turning people off rescuing! -
Wow, this is really ineresting! When I come home quietly the dogs don't seem to notice until I have turned the corner (I go in through the side gate). However the strangest thing happened many years ago with Cherry. I was really upset that we were going to the beach and mum and dad wouldn't let Cherry come (hey, I was 8 and she was my bst friend  ). So I told her "we're going to the beach and you can't come" and blah blah. After we left, she dug her way out of the yard, and thank god friends found her on the the exact way we drove, looking for the ute. This is the only time she has ever escaped, I just can't explain it

Squeeeeeee!!! Congrats LP :D

I agree with the choice on corgi too, small, but not too small and not dainty lil things either ;) But just adorable and loyal, and not so hard to train
-
I agree with what has been said about terriers, definately not. However I still stand by the schipperke - awesome dog for a kid to play with, with take as little or as much exercise as given, and not sure if it is all schips, but my boy has been very easy to train and is extremely obedient. But I agree with what showdog said at going to a dog show, or having a look at all the breeds on DOL to see what tickles their fancy - after all, appearance is a factor in choosing a dog/breed.

All have free yard access during the day. At night staffy cross is brought inside to sleep on the bed, because she thinks it's fun to kill the wildlife, but she likes the finer things in life, like aircon and doonas. Aussie shepherd lives entirely in the yard as he is a good boy outside, letting wildlife wander the yard, and he wakes me up during the night wanting back out. Then lastly schipperke gets the yard during the day then is crated outside at night due to the worry of him being taken by a snake (plenty of cats around here have). The crate is a soft one so has no gaps for snakes to get through...he's happy, he's alive, therefore I sleep well

Male mammals need testosterone - think it through. If you took the gonads away from a male child what side effects would be expected? Old men have greater health issues as their testosterone levels drop - Some stats have placed male animal which are desexed before puberty at a 73% increase in HD. Its a bit different for females and in my opinion they are better off if not used for breeding to be desexed as they can actually draw estrogen from places other than their ovaries and there is a risk of various health issues. The point Im trying to make is that if its my dog I should be given the facts for and against.i should be informed of possible consequences if I do or dont and when is the optimum time frame. As an owner I should be able to make my own informed decision which is suited to my style of living, my family and my dog. Take a look at the links I posted earlier - the studies are there including a recent one which shows that bitches which are not desexed live much longer than those which do. I wouldnt allow a breder to take away my right to make the choice for my dog and I don't see why puppy buyers should be treated as idiots and potentially irresponsible in order for some breeders to "protect them " The other issue for me is that if someone wants an entire dog they will simply tell lies - if you leave the decision open to allow the buyer to become educated ad make their own choice there is no reason for them to tell a breeder lies so you can then decide if they want to sell them a pup based on the truth and not just what they know you want to hear. Thank you for this information, very helpful. I have an entire dog who (strangely) loves to show, but i have been thinking on and off of getting him desexed due to his major problem in agility which is - peeing in the ring, no matter how much I walk him. So I'll definately have a read of the links :) I also have another entire male who is succssful in the show ring but doesn't have any peeing issues

I have an 11 year old desexed dog competing in agility? Certainly no hip problems here, and she's been desexed since she was 8 months old Just curious whats the go with the desexing association with joint problems being said? Not denying it, just curious :)

schipperke! Perhaps I'm biased. My boy doesn't bark much at all, easy grooming, small but tough as nails, and easy for a play with the ball or a 2km hike. Awesome little dogs, however not sure how they'd be alone as my boy has 2 other dogs to play with during the day, but I'm sure they'd be fine :)
-
This is a really interesting read! When I get into breeding schipperkes in the year to come, being a rare breed in Australia, I'd like to preserve the quality of the breed we hav in Australia. Therefore, I would have the 'not-so-good' quality pups desexed, however if someone was wanting a first show dog, or pehaps set up agility lines, I'd be happy to oblidge. It's just so hard to trust people these days I wouldn't feel right sending an entire dog to a pet owner. Their dog might be 'cute', so needs to be bred to another 'cute' dog, because the kids want to experience pups. That's what mice are for if you want to experienc cute babies ;) But hey, maybe that's just me...I just don't like seeing so many dogs in shelters being PTS every week and I certainly don't want to contribute to the problem when I know I can avoid it. Good luck with your search for puppy, they seem nice dogs :D Please keep us updated :)
