  1. What a fool... Super glad that there will be no charges laid, he deserved it.. Slightly putt off at how they had to say "it wasn't a pittbull or anything".
  2. Um an amount of training will help him, did you think about getting a bc before you did and think about the stimulation and training they need? Being the smartest breed in the world they need someone willing to pull out all the stops for them. Don't give him to the RSPCA find a no kill shelter, and obviously you are "traumatized" never obtain another dog again then (as you won't be able to walk them) maybe you're the problem and you should assess yourself, yes its a horrible experience but a lot of people go through a lot worse just be thankful you are both ok and work from there.. If you're the problem, give him up but find a good home and advise the owners of the "incident".
  3. I gave her a wonderful turkey neck at about 5 and skipped lunch.. stripped all the hard fat off of it and cut it up a bit so meat was hanging off of the bone.. didn't touch it.. Maybe she just does not like them, I have wasted about 7 bones since tuesday evening and whilst they are not expensive I am not sure what the matter is.. I will soak her kibble a bit but then again I do not want her to be completely immune to chewing.. Does anybody know of the biggest big dog puppy kibble on the market. Thanks for the advice so far
  4. Why don't you contact the breeder and ask *why* she/he felt like giving you the inaccurate score of the parents? Its kind of false advertising in a way and under new Consumer Laws the selling of dogs IS covered.. Ask them to pay for the test because you want to keep her and you love her... if she is in a bad way, I know it would be terribly hard but send her back.. to protect your family from heartbreak.. or.. join a very good pet insurance NOW.. I had a similar but very different situation with my new pup regarding her tail.... luckily when I decided to get surgery, the breeder offered to pay or have her back.. (please I was way to attached to give her back) so I just paid for it.. I refuse to blame by breeder for something that happened when I did not know how it eventuated. In your case, your breeder surely would have had both dogs tests done before he/she decided to breed? surely... When this happened to me (being a bit of a worry wart), fellow dolers suggested I talk to the breeder FIRST.. I was so worked up I didn't want too, but as soon as I did it sorted itself out.. Good luck with your pup.. I'm in SA too so if you come to the DOL meets or if you are near me I can recommend some excellent specialists and could probably have a crack at looking at the law for you too...
  5. I have a dobie.. similar kind of she was 5.7 at 8 weeks which is actually quite good at 11 weeks now she is 8.9... i think with bigger breed dogs its actually kind of good that they grow at a slower rate good for the bone formation or something.... some dogs may not have a lot of muscle definition until they are a few months old.. it varies, if your vet thinks shes ok thats all that matters... just monitor her.. Also I got worked up and went on to an american dobermann website where they were telling each other the weight of there puppies at 11 weeks.. so to compare I would convert lbs to kilos and see where I fit in.. for girl pups I was pretty high on the weight factor but then I read the follow up posts and most if not all of the smaller weights ended up being the right dobermann height and weight.. I popped into the dobermann thread and a breeder said a kilo for each week they were was a pretty good guide.. that is how I started to get worried, needless to say she looks in excellent health, my vet and breeder are happy with her and so am I...
  6. and finally.. you're telling me to sit.. I don't see no treats so I am going to stare at you blankly..
  7. I need some floss, my tongue is NOT working on this grass...
  8. I'm only giving her the bigger kibble (1 or 2 as a treat) to assess that very thing, she was at the vets yesterday to get her stitches out and a shot so she had a general check up... because I am planning on showing her I got my vet to go over all her limbs etc and he had a look inside her mouth (checked for any abnormalities) and found nothing. Last night whilst I was grooming/petting her I opened her mouth and actually touched her back teeth and tried to wiggle them..nothing is loose they look great, I know they will be falling out quite soon but by the looks of things not at the moment and she is still going nuts chewing her hard nylon bones, rubber and squeaky toys with her back teeth so I don't think its her teeth. I am no expert though.
  9. I am biased but a DOBERMANN. my little girl is 11 weeks ever so smart doesn't shed (yet) and is best friends with my lop eared bunny charles.. my two dobermanns back at my parents farm were HUGE dogs and although they sometimes jumped on us they NEVER jumped on my sisters twin boys from age 4 right up till 12 (when they were just about as tall as me) and even then it was just one welcome jump that was easily deterred...they are large (females smaller) but quite thin and they can flatten themselves out for a laugh haha... I've always loved Aussie Sheps, Old English Sheepdogs and Bearded Collies unsure about the shedding though as I have never owned one.. but you can always shave them Maremmas are livestock guardians (bred to protect animals) and are used to being alone, so if you do on occasion have to leave (emergency etc) they will probably be a little less inclined to go nuts, again unsure about the shedding but I think any breed that isn't a heavy shedder would suit.. Good luck!
  10. Thanks I'll give that a go tonight! My vet also gave me a small bag of large RC kibble that she has to chew, it takes her a while but she will have it after food as a tooth cleaner... Maybe she is just being delicate (or lazy) as she grows she might be more inclined to go crazy over the bigger bones, she is 9.5 kilos at 11 weeks so she is a big girl and was chomping on bones the first few days we got her.. bloody bucket!
  11. Hi all, Lately Effy has stopped chewing her food, she is on RC Junior and eats it but doesn't chew just kind of swallows it whole.. I also have her on a homemade mince of chicken carcass sardines etc which she loves, she also gets fresh bones, lambs neck, turkey neck, brisket, roo tail AND SHE WONT TOUCH THEM! its like she hasn't learnt how to chew, she will lick them and put them in the "too hard" basket.. there is nothing wrong with her teeth (vet confirmed) and I do not really want to change her kibble to a bigger one as she is radiant on the RC but I don't know how to get her to chew! I want her to be eating bones for her health and her teeth, she likes the meat off of them (sometimes instead of chucking the ones she hasn't touched when the ants come I will cut pieces off for her). She is 11 weeks now and has had a bucket, elizabethan collar on her for about 2 1/2 weeks now, could this have contributed to her issue? the bucket was so big she couldn't use her paws to hold bones etc so she just didn't bother. I forgot to add she doesn't wolf or guts her food she is quite a slow eater just no chewing! Any ideas/reccs/stories? TIA
  12. Hi all thanks a lot for your suggestions I will be at the next rotty show training class next month as she is 11.7 weeks old and she had stitches out today and her vet gave her her 12 week shot... so 2 weeks. I would absolutely love for anyone that has any free time that shows dogs or just knows the ropes to come to my house or alternatively I can come to you, to be taught how to stack my dog etc.. I have a bit of time off at the moment and then its straight back into work with late night tafe and uni through podcast, so I really wanted to get a bit done at home with her during this last week... She can sit drop stand etc but she is a bit mouthy at the moment so I keep it short and sweet as I do not want to bore her but I do not feel like I am getting anywhere. If anyone wants or knows of anyone that could help me out (kind of like a tutor) I would be grateful! I am willing to pay $30 for half an hour or $50 for an hour. Any time this week, on the weekends or after work hours Tuesday and Thursday. Thanks!
  13. Forgot to add that Council can make their own by-laws but NOT in respect of destroying dogs.. it seems like a few sections of the Act will need to be amended and that can only happen if most Councils vote yes to the proposed amendment.. that is where a petition may work.. I don't think they will bother but if they do the whole of South Australia could be at risk
  14. Just having a read of the Act now.. So many loopholes, as with all legislation though. At present the dog management officer cannot exercise the power conferred by subsection (1)(a) (a) subject to subsection (2), enter and inspect any place or vehicle and use such force as may be reasonably necessary to gain entry) except: (a) with the consent of the owner or occupier of the place or the owner or person in charge of the vehicle; or (b) on the authority of a warrant issued by a justice; or © to seize a dog found wandering at large;1 or (d) to seize a dog under this Act in circumstances in which the dog management officer believes on reasonable grounds that urgent action is required. Although no doubt if the legislation is passed a JP of each council will just sign a document or the dog management officer will just *believe* that the matter is urgent... At present Council can NOT destroy barking dogs dogs only put Control Orders on them set out below A Control (Nuisance Dog) Order requires— (a) the dog, while on premises of which the person who is responsible for the control of the dog is the occupier, to be kept indoors or in an enclosure that is constructed so as to prevent the dog escaping from it; and (b) the dog, except while confined to premises of which the person who is responsible for the control of the dog is the occupier, to be under the effective control of a person by means of physical restraint; and © all reasonable steps to be taken to prevent the dog repeating the behaviour that gave rise to the order. (6) A Control (Barking Dog) Order requires all reasonable steps to be taken to prevent the dog repeating the behaviour that gave rise to the order. (7) In this section— approved training course means a training course approved for the time being by the Board for the purposes of subsection (3). (3) A council may, on its own initiative or on application, make a Control (Barking Dog) Order in relation to a dog if satisfied that— (a) the dog is a nuisance; and (b) the dog has created noise by barking or otherwise in circumstances that would constitute an offence against this Act. The Council at present must give (7) days notice prior to giving any order which NEVER happens... they must also give owners the right to appeal, I do not see why they would even propose this ridiculous law if the dogs are not dangerous, imagine how many appeals they would have from dog owners.. I am still having trouble figuring out why they would bother unless it is a scare tactic..
  15. Check the FAQ for newbies at the top of this section it has everything in there... You may want to do a search on show leads its a toss up between what people prefer and its up to you.. if you google dog show leads australia you should get a fair idea of what people are using... hessonite and hide and collars are good websites to look at for a bit of a range.. (and also order from). Depending on what state you live in your local dog community for example mine is dogssa will have a heap of information also..
  16. I'm on medibank gold excellent for my little dobie.. Tail surgery was covered 100 excess and her 12 week vaccs and with 70 towards desexing or worming etc a year its pretty good.. It also covers allergy testing which is mighty expensive and we may have to start that with our girl soon! For 21 a fortnight I don't even notice the amount not in my bank!
  17. Don't look for a job in Adelaide I'm looking forward to finishing my legal studies and moving far out into the Country away from inconsiderate people. I am honestly ashamed to be a human sometimes.. And for all of them they say "as if your comparing dogs to children" helllo! I am never having children and I look after my dogs and love them a hell of a lot better then some people look after or love their kids..
  18. Just reading the comments of some inconsiderate **%&^s makes me want to hunt them down seeing as I am in Adelaide If my council brings this into effect I am moving I swear... What about screaming children and babies and people that have loud music on all night? what about more focus or help with training especially for the elderly that cannot do as much as they used to with dogs.. That being said people that do not have enough time for their dogs probably shouldn't own them but geeez this *could be* legislation is completely out of line! Might have to research the Constitution and see if it could become Commonwealth law... Would be keen to get a petition going if it goes ahead.
  19. A bit OT but I have a friends bulldog called Girl that sits up on chairs like humans and when the other pups around him (other friends dogs) carry on and start to get a little snarly she gets off the chair pushes them apart and goes and sits back on her chair.. it is hilarious behavior, she doesn't so much as even open her mouth and they all obey her.. My pup may be classed as dominant, she definitely knows I am her superior but with my partner (who lives in the same house) she will nip and trip him over and try and sit ABOVE his head.. it may be because I am the one training her although he is both rewarding and assertive when need be. Are dogs born this way? she is only 10 weeks old! I have a qualified trainer/behaviorist coming to my home this week to assess.. I will be interested in what is said in this topic..
  20. OOhh thank you, just saw that the entries close today, bugger.. oh well. I sent off my application forms to dogssa last thursday. Thank you for that link and your help.
  21. Thanks alot whisked away.. guess I will see you there in April.. I was hoping there would be someone that can come to your home and help you as I was hoping on entering my girl in the show on april 3... does anyone have good online links re stacking and show? Also I sound really daft and its probably very obvious but how do I "enter" shows, are there forms? or a special way of doing so? I've had a look on dogssa and I am a little confused. Thanks so much.
  22. Thanks for the reply! I have a dobermann puppy, she is 11 weeks so she is not really allowed out yet.. I live in the Eastern suburbs (Toorak Gardens) but I am willing to travel wherever I have to to get help.. She is hugely energetic so I want to start with stacking asap, I am just a bit lost at the moment..
  23. Hi My puppy is coming up to 12 weeks and I want to start taking her to shows.. I was wondering if anyone knew of any show handling classes or trainers that can help me out here in Adelaide? My breeder is in Victoria and whilst she can give me advice she cannot coach me in person (my first time showing) I just want to be extra prepared and to make sure I am doing things right. I have been to a couple of shows to observe but that is about it. I have done a quick search but whereas other cities have quite a few options it seems that here in Adelaide I am fairly restricted. TIA
