  2. Of course there's such a thing. Some ANKC recognised purebreds were once crosses. The Boxers gained a bob-tailed gene from clever crossing with Corgis, and after some number of generations crossing back to purebred Boxers, they gained the title of "purebred" again. What most people have an issue with is the advertising associated with the crossbreeds and the fact that crossbreeds seem to majorily come from unethical breeders (backyard or puppy farm) who don't health test. That's the very basic jist of it. It's not all of it, but the two main ones. There is a big difference between purposely cross breeding to establish a certain breed than cross breeding (eg "oodles") just for the sake of it, mostly by puppy farmers. They are not interested in recording, establishing a new breed for a specific purpose, and wanting to have that breed recognised by canine authorities. Yes, a large number of our present day pedigree pure breed dogs come from mixtures, but that was done in most cases to establish a breed for a certain job or service, and records were carefully kept on the progress of the generations to enable registration as a pure breed. I hardly think one can compare today's mongrels with yesterday's method of establishing a breed. Um. Nobody's arguing that. She asked if there was such a thing as multi-generational crosses and indeed there are. Purebreds of today were once "multi generational crosses". Remember, it's just a label to describe crossing towards another cross of the same type multiple times in a row, nothing more. It's not comparing it to the "worthiness" of ye olde days of crossbreeding dogs compared to today's. Just a definition, don't need to get fired up

  4. Haha omg you poor poor people!! The worst thing that Hugo has ever "eaten" or chewed on, is my spare sports bottles that I leave laying around on the floor (my fault, really, I give him old bottles to chew on and then I'm surprised when he grabs one of mine and I expect him to distinguish the two).
  5. We have a giant bone from the butcher, I think it's a leg bone or something, and Hugo's licked it all clean and it's migrated from outside in the yard to inside the house, and he chews on it when he gets bored. It's lasted for like six months and barely a dent in it, and seemingly licked and gnawed clean of any residue meat or marrow, but he still seems to find it entertaining and gives it a good go every now and again. I was going to get a deer antler for him but he seems quite satisfied with the giant bone, so why bother
  6. I had Hugo on Nutro when he was a puppy but don't specifically remember that he was having extraordinarily large poos or anything.. could be a sign the food is not agreeing with him as the more that comes out at the other end, the less that is absorbed by the body (logically). We have Hugo on Black Hawk now (a premium, holistic food) and his poos are quite small, so it's definitely agreeing with him. Also works out to be cheaper, and he's gotten a nice sheen to his coat since switching. Maybe you should consider looking around to find food that best suits your dog (regardless of any "holistic" or "premium" labels)? They're all different, some dogs do well on Pal, surprisingly enough! Ask around for some samples of food (I know you can get a 1KG sample bag of Black Hawk, for example, I don't know about any other brands that give out free samples, though, since I've only ever fed two things), and see which one agrees with your dog the best. Good luck!
  7. I just parted his toes on that foot to check and it looks like there's some sort of.. I don't know exactly what it is, reminds me of congealed blood, but he doesn't seem sore or tender near that area so it can't be a cut (or can it?). But yeah, some sort of dark brown "dirt" deposits between his toes and against the big pad of his foot. I'm starting to lean towards thrush personally but I'm going to take him to the vet tomorrow to get it checked out.
  8. Is there anything I can do for him? Soak his foot in something?
  9. Eek!! I dont' know, I sure hope not. I don't see anything on the underside of his foot, I've inspected it with a magnifying glass and couldn't see anything--do you think there could be some sort of splinter that's gone deep under the skin?
  10. He's been doing it for the last few days, I think a sting would have been over by now And do allergies only target one foot?
  11. Hey guys, Hugo has been chewing on his right front foot and I don't know why. At first we assumed it was a bindi, but when I looked between the pads to check the skin there, lo and behold no bindi! He's been specifically chewing the bottom of his right front foot, which makes me think that there may be something bothering him, but I have no idea what. I've put a sock on his foot to stop him from doing it, is there anything else I can do for him? What could it be?
  12. This, usually better prices than Pets1 or whatever. A really cheap website I've found though has been:http://petproductsontheweb.com.au Awesome prices. Free shipping.
  13. Thanks for the advice everyone! So they should be on-leash in the ocean too? I suppose that makes sense, I don't want him to get carried away
  14. Well he's only a year old so not that old Just not a puppy anymore, I guess. So just gradually move him deeper in the water until instinct kicks in? I don't need a float vest or anything?
  15. Now that summertime has arrived, and we're getting more active outdoors, we're wanting to take Hugo on a holiday to the Gold Coast I wanted him to experience the water and swimming in it.. We only ever went to the beach once and because I was fully dressed, I never got very far out into the ocean (only knee height) and Hugo was only too happy to follow along. But he's never swam before. Is this something that dogs inherently know how to do? Do I have to teach him? Am I able to teach him now that he's not a puppy anymore? Does he need water wings or something?? Any help on the subject would be appreciated.
  16. That is a crazy huge list of questions. I agree with Lilli, some things are just like.. not your business. At the end of the day, you're looking to get a healthy, well-socialised puppy. Every question that addresses stuff other than this is pretty much irrelevant (especially like "Have any of the pups been shown? What results have they achieved?" and other stuff like that). It's off-topic, I asked my breeder for eye and hip/elbow scores, asked what the parent's general temperament was like, and that was about all I needed to know. Of course I found out a lot more than that because we chatted on the phone instead and she gave me a lot lot lot of information about her dogs but yeah, if you're looking for so many answers, pick up the phone, don't make her answer a survey. A breeder once said that it was a privelige for the buyer to get a puppy from her, not a privelige for her to sell a puppy to some particular buyer, and the list comes off as.. a bit.. idk, cold, ungrateful? Like she's just another breeder on a list of breeders to you, and not a breeder whom you're actually keenly interested in. Does she have a website? More often enough, breeders have websites and a lot of the questions you have can be answered by a few minutes clicking on a website.
  17. Fill up the container with water halfway or less--freeze it. Then when it's frozen, line a layer on top of the frozen block, cover with water, and freeze again.
  18. It puts Hugo in a coma when I put it on him. All dogs are different, maybe you should try a tight t-shirt first, it's essentially the same thing. I didn't do any prep work with it either, just gave him a treat and slapped it on him. The effects were instant--immediate snugglepuss.
  19. That was one of my choices when I went looking for a dog, but alas, too much fluff and too adorable, I like my dogs like I like my men--tough and rugged.
  20. Can't you just tell her not to do it? They're your dogs, it's your backyard, you shouldn't need to fish for reasons why someone shouldn't throw food into your backyard. Tell her what you said here--that your dogs are on a diet/on diet food and the bread isn't helping them.
  21. I thought this too and then I realised that it's not like the medicine is syringed in, they mix everything up together fairly well (I mean even a chew is pretty small, it would have to be dispersed evenly through many many many chews, hence mixed very very well), so the chances that it's not pretty evenly dispersed are.. minimal. I'd get the two large and divide them. We do this for Comfortis for Hugo--we get him double the dosage and cut it in half and just give him a half tablet whenever we dose.
  22. Depends what breed and what the breed average is. By hip scores of 5 and above, you mean 2:3, 1:4, 0:5, right? And not 5:5, because that's a 10.
  23. Dammit, not in Brisbane I don't get to see anything!Hopefully I'll be getting those fancy photos sent to me through email, I want to see the turn-out!
  24. We have demon children for next door neighbors.. they're destructive, spoiled and malicious. I've never disliked children more than I dislike them. Hugo doesn't like them at all, whenever they're out, he barks at them and they just stare at him or they go closer to the fence and make noise with the various noisemakers they have (like the pretend guns that have the high pitched laser shooting sound when you pull the trigger).. they're technically not really "doing anything", so I can't exactly go to their parents. I mean what am I going to say? Your children are looking at my dog and playing with their toys? I did once see them throw rocks at the chickens and taunt them with food from the other side of the fence (you know, put the food against the fence, when the hen pokes her beak towards it, they pull it away, the hen sticks her head further through the fence, strains to reach the food but just can't reach). We just keep Hugo inside when they're over, since they're technically only grandchildren who come over (much too often) on visits to their grandparents. But they still annoy the carp out of him, he stares and barks through the flyscreen doors if he can see them. I hope you get your matter solved quickly.
