  1. Is there such things as a dog that takes bad photo's? because i swear i have one ! haha As soon as i bring my camera out it is like he knows he has to pose and blunty refuses to help me out. *wishes she stuck with Brandy on 52 weeks! My photos are soo plain! then again i am not a photographers backside when it comes to taking pic's lol anyway here is my 12/52 time is surely flying... ehh..
  2. if i was closer i certainly would !
  3. You should watch the Dogtown special on the Vick dogs then, I think you'll get a surprise. The worst dog I ever had foamed at the mouth when a plastic bag blew across the other end of a football field sized area. Her owner had lived in a few states and the dog was seven years old, so they'd been to a few trainers. His dog couldn't be walked anywhere where another dog was likely to be seen. Medication hadn't helped, and the dog was born that way. We had this dog taking food around other dogs within a couple of weeks, the owner was astounded. Then we very quickly got her down to sits, drops, looking at other dogs, and walking on a loose leash within 5m of another dog within another couple of weeks. She was never brilliant, but at least she could be walked without having a fit and taking days to come down. saw it a while back, my eyes were glued! i use both the click to calm methods, and also instead of touching, i make a noise in which only one of my dogs(my dog with personal space aggression) imediately snaps out of what ever he may be doing (like a farting noise sorry) metaphorically speaking which i find works for me alot better then if i were to touch. i am going to a behaviourist soon so i can't wait to see what techniques are used :DI see what works better for my dog to his type of aggression.
  4. No, if they are a problem then food will not "snap them out of it". I think a lot of people try this and are disappointed, trainers included. It doesn't work that way, that isn't positive reinforcement, reinforcement means you increased the behaviour. The next time the dog is presented with the same environment, you see the reinforced response again which is what we all want. We need to build those responses without putting the dog over threshold too far, and a lot of people don't know how to do that, or are disappointed when something happens that is out of their control (and it WILL). Or they think that the only way they can do it is to control the environment too much, which isn't practical. Competent positive reinforcement training isn't particularly restrictive. We usually have dogs working with other dogs within a couple of weeks, and we get robust reinforcement - more of the behaviours that we want. There are always exceptions, but really most dogs fall somewhere on the bell curve, the extremes aren't all that common. The Michael Vick pit fighting rescues are up there with the worst of them, and the rescue org who took them on didn't do anything I wouldn't do (where is the love for those guys, btw?) If you're using corrections every time your dog is around another dog, then all you're really doing is interrupting. The behavior should be improving. You should be able to start to use food around other dogs very quickly, not to prove a point about positive reinforcement, but as a bit of a demonstration that your dog is not highly anxious. Sorry i didn't make my post quite clear, i was using the chicken as an example for concentration levels hehe, i use positive reinforcement marking with my boy on certain terms with his aggression(he isn't bad as what it may have came out like) but take one of CM cases i couldn't see food working for a pitbull. (sympathetic post not sarcastic so no body mis-interprets it There are so many assumptions, there. Off the top of my head: a) The dog "knows" it b) The dog perceived the cue c) Food is a reward in this situation d) The reward history is strong enough e) The dog is under threshold f) The behaviour is comfortable and does not cause pain g) The cue for the behaviour is the most salient stimuli h) The cue to the dog is what the handler thinks it is If you do apply P+ or P- as a consequence for not doing the behaviour cued, are you decreasing the incidence of "not doing as asked" or are you decreasing the incidence of whatever the dog was doing instead? Dogs are always behaving. I'd say use R- if you feel you must do something. I wouldn't bother, though. With these purley positive methods, it is using the dogs natural movements and behaviours, making it free will for the dog to follow them. (sorry bit confused by your post) but a lot of the dogs i know that already have been taught the behaviour, when they refuse to do the exercise they "win" because the owners let them get away with it. Since there is only nice methods where the dog isn't being forced to respond it does basically what ever it wishes. applied to obedience not so much CM rehab
  5. CM get's results at the end of the day, there is no faking cases with his "red level" dog aggressive dogs being in his pack acting friendly.. The man knows his sh.t, he can read the dogs, the behaviour and there needs. yes i also would love to see someone with a bag of freshly cooked chicken and my dog on the end of the leash, go for your life as you won't get anywhere with his aggression. Teaching him exercises, like sit, in a area with no dogs yes! motivation training works perfectly, add a dog, the chicken is nothing more then a bade of glass on his nose, if the dog is at a level of intensity, food is not going to snap him out of it it has to be an action. All dog are individuals, what works for some, may not work for others i am open to that totally. if a dog doesn't want to do a exercise for food even if he knows it, how else are you mean't to get him to do the behaviour you asked ? ask the stubbon one kindly ? reminds me of parents and their kids, common sense.
  6. haha, reminds me a bit of that laugh that "Mutley" does from that kids cartoon
  7. my pet hate small dogs in a drivers lap ! would be a different story if you could fit your rotti on your lap lol
  8. i vote for a springer spaniel, they seem great around people, dogs, gentle although they are natural hunters, they are very smart and would be taught easily to accept your other animals and i know springer that tolarates birds out of a cage flying and goats. *setter *whippet also on my list then again kelpie (not biased one bit) great workers if you need them to round up your sheep/cattle ahha also great lounge lizards and companions
  9. $$$!, so they go in and out quick as possible so they can get more dogs and the $ that comes wiht it, if they are a business with multiple dogs coming and going it is the easiest way. so it is based on what the owner wants and the temperment of the dog.
  10. I find in my area(not a groomer but have worked with one), people still complain and i always use to tell them your lucky you are not in sydney. The ones who complain have matted dogs and come every 6-8 weeks no wonder it is expensive ! Price range is around 50, 55 for a malt, +$ if they are hard to do or matted Anything that is prone to loose huge amounts of hair eg mal and husky you would be looking at 80 + just for a bath and blow dry for dogs if they don't really shed coat and if your dog lost hair when drying, you would get charged extra as we had to do the clean up and it took forever to dry. 70 for medium size dogs like a cocker spaniel b/dry, shave and tidy, nails, ears or a border collie for b/dry trim and tidy, nails, ears, and matts cut out and around 80 for a full shave.
  11. My lazy 11/52 "Literally ZZZZZzzzzzing" in his filthy favourite bed!
  12. thanks for your help TerraNik.
  13. Probably the wrong thread but i need to find info on keeshonds!!!! and there is no sub breed here for them hopeing you all can help. I am helping a friend train her dog (basic obedience and house/outside manners) very soon i want to set her self up for success with training a new dog/pup so i want to know everything possible to this particular breed. so what methods work for this breed, motivators, food/toys? Are they Quick learners? weakness'? habits both good and bad? what breed are they most like? Traits? I have heard they are similar to a pom, is this true? sorry for taking over, but when i think of this breed i think of spitz so you all may be able to help me? all suggestions please in the methods.
  14. my 3 dogs won't touch natural balance even though i thought it was a good brand to buy.. they went through 1/4 of a bag and just refused to eat it. i changed to a different brand that was natural ingredients and the change was dramatic the only kibble they stopped eating not sure why. Not totally sure about that natural balance either it made my guys loose weight dramatically, good for the weight but bad because it was so fast. maybe it is because it had no crap in it ? that makes them want to eat the other products more? warm some food up (chicken) that way the heat will release the smell! and add a small amount into the kibble.
  15. The carers are obviously very happy to look after this dog, so i really don't see the problem in this dog being kept alive. Pop-Eye has quailty of life to me and looks happy to be in a wheel chair. This dog isn't aggressive, easy to control he is just as worthy as a fully developed and healthy rescue dog. Some people like unique, so best of luck to Pop eye! With every one's opinions in which we are intiltled too i would like to end this bitter arguement as we cannot change his out come but just wish him the best of luck where ever he may end up.
  16. I don't know what makes you say this, very strange behaviour to think that they are only saving them for attention? i have become attached to every single foster that i have had come into my care, if i didn't like dogs i certainly would not be fostering and every one i know that fosters has the same opinion. People rescue and foster .. because they like giving and the feeling they get from helping another in need not for attention, greed but for the sake in saving a life in need even if it has two legs or four. Most often pounds will not pay for any surgery for dogs with cuts, or who are sick etc. example: In the paper the other week, the pound wouldn't pay to get dead puppies out of a grey hound, the dog was getting very ill and was going down hill fast. Rescue had to come along and save this dog because the pound wouldn't save it and didn't give a shit about the dog or it's puppies, pretty sure the rescue were not looking for attention but the feeling they have done the right thing by the dog so it didn't die even when they didn't have the money! and are still fitting the bill. And recues being second quality?, all dogs are individual people choose they dog they are after they don't look at other dogs and think it gives them a bad rep. no dog is perfect, nearly all will have problems with one thing or another after coming from a pound or puppy farm. that is what rescue is about saving a life and giving them a second chance, limb no limb it is still a dog needing help.
  17. It isn't about the fostering and costs which are normally donations anyway out of the public to save lifes and that is what has been done. It wasn't about having other dogs more worthy then this one because he doesn't have legs, it was about giving him a chance, which you are saying not too. This dog was lucky enough to be saved. The dog is happy that should be all that matters, if the dog has had vetting done vets has obviously given the ok for it's health and safety. I have done heaps for unfotunate dogs like this one, and fostered plenty and rehomed plenty for rescue so i find it rude for you to asume that.. Maybe inspirational was the wrong word which you have taken out of context, this dog was an ispiration. not the situation.
  18. i use him too if he is on. no idea abut hip scores etc though.
  19. It was a foster dog that they helped. that is like putting a dog down because it is deaf! i think that is cruel! sorry but i don't see this as terrible, as the dog looks happy. if the dog was in any pain then yes i would consider this video wrong. i can understand where it could be seen as cruel but that dog doesn't show any signs that he is in pain. maybe i should have posted the wheel chair video with this one as i saw both before posting this. my personal opinion, he is being well looked after and is loved.
  20. ahh that is a darn shame, but i think everyone knows how devastated you would be if she left to have raised her and spent so much time with her and then pass on this beautiful dog of yours even when we know where they end up and the end result so congratulations on your new dog and a great one at that!
  21. for those born a little different who just want to be treated the same as everybody else. :D
  22. i would tell your dog to sit and wait until you released him to go say hello, or sit and stay until the dog walked passed and rewarded both behaviours? works for my dogs when on a walk in a busy area with people letting my dogs jump on them on purpose, drives me nuts so they must wait until i say they can go approach people wanting to pat them.
