  1. Just an update - all looks good now - my boy is as keen as mustard and won't leave her - so that is a tie on Monday night a tie on Wednesday morning and I think they will get one more in tomorrow - won't let him go tonight give him a chance to get his sperm count back up - the old girl with the anal gland problem is now totally uninteresting to him - so looks like all should be fine - hope so. As said before he has never missed with my own girls and does produce lovely pups.
  2. Guess what - the minute I pick up the phone to start making calls they tie again - I think I should trust my boy's judgement - maybe he just needed to get his strength back - so that is a tie on Monday night and now one Wednesday morning - maybe one more before she flys home Friday. Do you still think it still worth a progesterone test to see where she is?
  3. At day 8 would have thought more likely to be the beginning of the cycle - her vagina was still firm and still bright red blood the day she arrived - I think I may get her another progesterone test at least today and see where we are at. What was the result of her previous Prog test, Minigirl? No amount of Prog testing will result in a mating if they are not interested, though. An A.I. would be the only option in a reluctant but technically viable union. If the owner has given you the okay, speak to your vet.

  5. Before the mating she said she was more than happy for me to have a progesteronbe test and would pay for it - do you think it may be worth doing? Didn't ask about AI though.
  6. I have a lovely little bitch staying that has been flown up from Melbourne to Brisbane to mate with my boy - so far my boy has only ever had the three girls he lives with - this is his first outside stud - he is 4 years old. The owner said she first noticed her girl in season a week ago last Monday (its now Wednesday morning) and had a progesterone test done on about Thursday as she had been mated once before and no puppies - her vet told her that her progesterone levels can change very rapidly so to get her up to me asap - she arrived Friday night. My boy at first showed no interest at all infact was a little dominent and agro towards her advances. I didn't bother with further progesterone tests as my boy has never missed his mark and always produced pups each time I wanted them with my own 3 girls. ON Monday night he did have a mating with her though and a 20 minute tie - but now does not show much interest at all. I thought if he was true to form he would be looking for another go by now but now only a bit playful but not seeming to want to go the whole way even though the girl is more than willing. The other problem I have is that my old and now pretty fat girl who has retired and been desexed got an anal gland abcess on the day the new girl arrived - (first time ever had this happen to any of my dogs) well took her to the vet and it is now all under control and seems to be well healed - BUT - my boy is really interested in this old fat girls rear end and not so much the pretty little girl in season!!! My husband is taking the old girl out for a couple of hours today to get her out of the house and I am hoping for another tie with the girl from South - after the success on MOnday night I thought there may have been another mating today and have arranged to fly her back on this Friday coming. I am a little concerned that this girl does seem to have somewhat erratic seasons - as she didn't conceive last time with a prooven stud but would love to see pups from her and my boy - I know many a litter is the result of one good mating and maybe worried over nothing - will see how they go when the old girl is out of the house for a few hours today. Do you think I should get her another progesterone test or just let them go together and see what happens - will keep them separated for a few hours today as well and then let them together. Its just so different from the usual when he mates with my own girls. Any thoughts!!! I thought the mating was ealier than I would have expected but maybe that is how she is - can they go off season that quickly? Or be ready at only about day 7 or 8. Incidentally - love my old girl to bits she is now just a pet.
  7. Ultrasound 28 days progesterone treatment at 39 days - no more problems after suppliments.
  8. Good luck with your girl - I hope the end result is as good as mine turned out to be - 8 beautiful pups all delivered naturally - and now all happily living in lovely homes. I took my girl to a reproduction specialist vet Phil Thomas here in Brisbane - and it started with the ultrasound and blood test which at 28 days was normal - we continued the blood test at weekly intervals ( I think now) and at day 39 the levels were dropping so she started on one tablet of progesterone each morning - another ultrasounds and also blood tests - I can only say the reproduction vet was wonderful - spoke to me every day on the phone during the last 12 or so days - and he had to go away from the Thursday till the Sunday - so arranged for the other reproduction specialist to talk to me those days. I watched her like a hawk and she was booked into for a c/section on the Monday - but on the Sunday morning - while I was on the phone to the stand in vet she popped out a puppy - just like that - the other seven came all within an hour and a half - amazing - she never looked back just looked after the pups so well and she was fit and well too. All continues to go well with mum and she is as bouncy and happy as ever now 13 weeks later. I do remember the vet telling me that the progesterone was human grade - I do have the notes on it all he sent me I can let you have them on a message if you are interested. I do want to let her have another litter and will go into it next time with a lot less worry - of course there is always a bit of uncertainty but now going through it I feel a lot more confident. The vet did say what happened is not very common - he had not treated a lot of cases before - also remember him say that giving progesterone too early can cause problems for the pups but this was not altogether cetain - but as my girl didn't start till day 40 all pups were healthy and strong. Sometimes it can happen quite early and the pups are adsorbed by the mother - having them get to day 51 is less common - and soooo distressing - never want to re-live that morning - but what came to follow was wonderful. Again - good luck.
  9. I think also if a person is willing to pick up the phone and talk to you you have a much better feel for the buyer to be - I have sold puppies to people who have made contact by email but the ones that I talk to over the phone early in the peice and find out just what they want and can give to a puppy are the ones that I give my first consideration to. Its easy to send off the same email to many breeders and see what comes back but a phone call is a lot more personal and gives the breeder a chance to judge the buyer to be. A great percentage of my pups are also bought from people interstate as well so don't be put off by the pup having to fly - they do it all the time and as already stated by another its not really expensive - I always say - the cost of a pup is just the tip of the ice berg when you add up what it will cost you over a lifetime. I always remember a lady who rang me from interstate wanting a pup so much but I had already promised my whole litter and told her this - she had lost her dog and was heartbroken and sounded so nice - within about 48 hours I did get a cancellation but had not taken this lady's name - my husband was able to retrieve the phone number on received calls and I rang her back probably ahead of some others on my waiting list and she was so happy - her and her daughter kept in touch with emails and thankyous for the photos and phone calls the whole of the rest of the time till he went to them and he became their perfect pet - had she just emailed me I probably would not have gone to the trouble to find her again. Good luck in finding the pups for your friends - but I would rather speak to the person who is going to own the puppy myself.
  10. New rules Tris they have to be microchipped before submitting paperwork as of 01/01/2012 if memory serves me. * runs off to read Website.* Well that gave me no joy re microchipps but found out some other info.  I put my paperwork in for a litter back in September - one pup was taken the day before I got them microchipped - they were 8 weeks - was worried about getting them done earlier than this - but they had had their first vaccination - I got the new owner to sign they would microchipp the pup at its next vet check - which they did and I put this on the registration form - Dogs Qld rang me and said I could not register that pup till I had the microchip number - the new owners gave me the number and I emailed it to Dogs Qld and they did the registration ok - but they won't register a litter without the microchip numbers on the paperwork. Guess its a step forward really to help identify dogs now not only for if they are lost or stolen but a check as to their correct genetic line.
  11. Good names - I always microchipp my pups in my own name and then don't put the pedigree form in till the pups are all gone to their homes pretty well always by 12 weeks - I just tell the new owners to be that their pedigree will be sent and the change of ownership microchip paperwork within 2 to 3 weeks - you download the form off the net and sign the change of ownership form for the microchipping - costs them $7 but no one complains about this - its easier for the vet too rather than trying to get all the microchipping done in different names and sometimes at 7 or so weeks you don't have all the details required anyway. Its a lot cheaper here in Qld to register your pups before 3 months - so that is probably why your older dogs were already registered. The trouble with selling pups with a pedigree in your own name is that sometimes the people who buy them as pets don't bother to change the pedigree over to their own name - have a breeder friend who rang Dogs Qld about another matter and found she had over two computer pages of dogs still in her name. Pups that go to pet homes I usually ask the new owners what they would like to call their pup and build on that - but a theme is nice - however once I bred 8 pups and wanted to have the word rose gold common to them all but they wouldn't let me - they all were given my second choice - apparently Rose Gold was too similar to a prefix already in use. Can be a bit of a worry but at least they let you have 30 letters and spaces now including the prefix.
  12. Hope Haidee and her pups come though this well - will be thinking of you.
  13. Desexed my oldest girl at 6 - she was and is very much our pet and hubby and I were quite worried about how she would be - we went up to the vet to bring her home complete with blanket to carry her home with and very concerned looks on our faces and waited for her to be brought out - she bounded out on a lead - happy to see us and didn't seem to have any problems at all - we took her home and she even jumped on the bed while we re not looking. Thats over a year ago now - only have 3 girls at home and will do the same as each one finishes breeding - only thing with my girl is she has put on a little weight - but what the heck her and I can have the middle age spread together - its probably my own faut though as she does love her food but she is fit and healthy. MY boy I keep at home is nearly 5 not sure yet if I will keep him whole once I no longer need him.
  14. Very interesting stuff many thanks
  15. Sorry mis read you answer - I totally agree that 16 weeks is a long time to keep the puppy isolated - when a newer vaccine can be effective at 11 to 12 weeks. I actually put this thread in this forum by mistake ment to put it on the breeders forum - which I have now done.
  16. He is not staying till 16 weeks - he is going at 9 - its just that the Nobivac vaccine gtives immunity at a much earlier age. But not all vets seem to want to use it.
  17. I am sending one of my pups to Melbourne from Brisbane - the new owner to be asked about vaccination and I told him I now use Nobivac for my dogs as it means immunity quicker and has not let me down and also cheaper in the long run as only one more shot is needed. The owner to be came back and said that his vet has advised him that the old vaccine is better for Victoria as there is a high incidence of parvo there and Nobivac is not strong enough for the parvo????? That means the old 3 vaccination method and the pup not being able to go out till after 16 weeks - I seem to remember a threat on this before and someone saying that Nobivac has to be bought bulk or something and some vets don't want to bother doing this - I don't mind what immunisation the people use just as long as the pup is vaccinated and gets his full immunity. My pups had their first immunisations 7 and a bit weeks. My vet is very good and a really up to date young man - I can't help but wonder if some of the older vets just don't want to give something a bit newer a try or dare I even think it - after the extra money for another immunisation. But has anyone any thoughts on this?

  19. I've just been through a similar experience - but had not taken a deposit as yet - wanted me to send a 9 week pup by road tranport where it left me at 6 am on a Tuesday and did not arrive till sometime on the following Thursday - she couldn't understand why I would not do this - I then said I would fly it into the capitol city some 3 hours drive away from her - as in the hot summer I would only fly my pups on a direct flight - if I did as she wanted the pup would have a 2hour wait between flights in Sydney - I refused to do this and thankfully she has cancelled - but if she didn't I would have - she was so awful about it all shows little regard for a dog I feel could never put my pups through this. I have left home at 4am to get my pup to the airport for an early flight south in the summer - I hate them flying at the best of times but I fell she was not a good buyer at all - glad she has cancelled saved me telling her.
  20. Had not heard of this vaccine before - but my daughter in law bought a pup (they didn't want a poodle!!!) but it is an adorable Beagle - well she had a one only vaccination at 10 weeks and told me vet said it was fine for walking etc a short while after - I said are you sure - this can't be true but it must be - sounds pretty impressive if its as good as that. Do you remember the name of the vaccine - I have used Nobivac - and believe it can be used from 10 weeks - I have used it after the initial vaccination at 12 weeks all seems fine with the pups I've used it on. On the feeding side she is absolutlely fine now - probably just had it with breast feeding but has given them a drop here and there and I am no longer worried on this one - but no doubt will find something else to worry about!!! but hope not.
  21. I think my girl is trying to totally confuse me - she decided to jump in this morning after I posted the topic - she stood there for a small while while they all gathered and fed - she must be just winding down gradually after all - will cut her food down and just keep an eye on her - her teats are nice and soft now. God I'm a worrier!!!!
  22. My girl's pups were just 6 weeks yesterday - have been giving them food since nearly 4 weeks as this was a big litter - 8 pups - now the mother has completely stopped feeding the pups - not that they need feeding from her any more they are all strong little pups and eat well - but am a little concerned as her teats still feel so full - warm but not really hot - and a bit firm but not hard - she has no interest at all in feeding them now just goes to see they are ok and thats it. She is happy enough but a lot quieter than normal - wags her tail and is eating. Its just that my other girls always seem to gradually stop the feeds and the teats just shrunk away little by little. Are there any things I should look out for as far as the teats go - or should it just settle down in a few more days.
