I did not say the scar was a huge price to pay FFS. My post was related to the question of why the vet lifted the scab, which Rappie kindly answered sensibly and informatively. Some people give no thought to things others see as relevant or important.

Thanks HW. Damn that I can't get to Aldi. Have breathing difficulties atm.

I think if I were younger I would at some stage own a blue merle Aussie. However since my Cavaliers will be my last dogs and my first dogs were GSD's and then I owned Rottweilers for many years I'm happy with the breeds and individual dogs I've owned.

I do deal with the canes that come up on my side Perse and find Glyphosate to be the best. I cut the canes and leave some green growth to poison. This is the neighbour that has the self sown huge loquat treat on the fence line that almost caused the death of my Cavalier girl who ate the dropped fruit and developed an intestinal blockage. As it happened that very large tree eventually happened to die. He thought I may be to blame and called the council to knock on my door. The council guy and left here with no thought of me being to blame. This sod of a neighbour is not popular with the council, they're probably sick of the complaints about him. Unfortunately the loquat tree though quite dead has now grown all these self sown suckers that again are growing beside the dead tree and are about 5 metres above the fence line. The neighbour never did cut down the dead tree in the interest of safety. It's a matter of time before the dead branches fall and cause some damage. Hopefully they fall his way and not on my roof. My house is close to the back fence as there are two houses on my block and mine is at the back.

Nothing quite like a nasty neighbour to make life a misery. They destroy the friendly vibe of the area. My neighbours are lovely with the exception of the man who lives at the back of my property. He's a lazy sod and has planted some hideous things along the fence line including invasive, running bamboo that is thriving amongst all his tall weeds. He does no yard maintenance and three of his neighbours including me, had to call the council to visit him on different occasions because he leaves his food rubbish (he calls it compost) laying around the yard and rats were breeding on his property and affecting all of us. Why would a person who does no planting or gardening require compost and how about a compost bin? This bamboo is now throwing canes all down the side of my house and I shudder to think what it's doing to my foundations (what are those loud cracking noises I often hear coming from under my house?) His bamboo is also causing a mess over my paved areas. It is totally out of control and is also causing the fence to lean. I posted a polite letter to him yesterday asking him to attend to this. I suspect he'll ignore my letter and I'll have to pay a handyman or gardener to deal with the problem.

Probably Perse. Obviously the hair follicles were destroyed so I accepted the vet's diagnosis of a WTS bite. edited to fix quote

Would a vet be able to identify the cause of a wound by lifting a scab to actually see a wound? Somehow I have my doubts. There was no festering under the scab of my Rottie's supposed WTS bite, just a clean wound that healed rapidly but bugger about the lack of hair growth to the area. I know my GP can't identify the cause of a wound because she asks me what happened to cause it.

Agreed!. I couldn't believe it when he picked the scab off and asked "What did you do that for"? Now she'll have a scar. He said she wouldn't have a scar...wrong. She had a scar for life. None of my dogs have ever had a scab since then but if it were to happen I would be telling the vet not to rip the scab off, whether or not he wanted to hear it.

I'm also starting to think cameras would be good. No need out the front as my house is roof gutter high with a fence to fence brick wall. The back of my house and yard is a different story. Is it expensive to have a security camera or two installed? Doing the job myself is out of the question it would need to be done by a professional.

You will have that wonderful Rottie T and good luck to you. My Rottie owning and rescuing days are over. Too old now and a couple of serious, incurable health problems put an end to my days of Rottie ownership. I do so love my Cavaliers though but they're getting on now and will be my last dogs

My Rottie was bitten by a White Tail Spider when she was in the crate recoving from ACL surgery. I must have brought it on on the washing. I noticed a small lump on my dog's side when we were on our way to the vets. The vet pulled off a scab and told me it was a WTS bite (I asked how he knew) he said he'd seen them before. It healed and left a round scar about the size of the old once cent piece and her hair never grew in that spot again. The hair around it covered it so it was hidden.

Sadly I think a lot of dogs would go with someone putting a lead on them - they would just think they were going for a walk! So happy he has been returned. Mine won't go if someone else puts a lead on them unless I walk a couple of steps in the direction they're supposed to be walk..even with the vet. However they're small enough to be picked up.

My dogs are walked only on paved footpaths and a well mown tiny walk through park at the end of my court. The only weeds we come across are those that are growing in neglected nature strips. I go over my dogs thoroughly every night. However the barley seed I found in my dog's eye I saw instantly that he was shaking and blinking so was able to remove offending seed before any harm was done.

But just because that's how you feel it doesn't mean that someone who likes several breeds and could take on any of them won't be just as good an owner. ETA if I wasn't limited in numbers there are heaps of breeds I'd like to have! That's exactly my point. A breed I would 'like' to own as opposed to a breed I definitely love and want in my life. I like a number of breeds but I don't love them.
-
This is the part I don't get. That someone is happy to take a pup of one of any three breeds. I fall in love with a breed and no other breed could possibly be substituted for the breed I want. I loved Rottweilers and owned and rescued them. When I felt I was too old to be running around the obedience oval with large dogs (I am small of slight build) I then went with Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. A breed I had fallen in love with many years ago. I have two elderly dogs of this beautiful breed.

How can you know whether or not you've been a successful as someone else when you don't eve know the person or their level of success or failure? Or was yours meant to be a throwaway comment rather than a statement of fact?

You can't get hold of a rescue dog without house check first, why is it so taboo for a breeder to want to see their babies going to a safe dog friendly home? Yes, Dona, I agree. No way would I ever have allowed one of my rescues go without a house check, usually done by me.

Grass seeds are wicked this year. I saw my Cavalier shaking his head and stopped our walk to see what was going on. He was squinting a little and on pulling his eyelid down, there was a barley grass seed inside his bottom lid. Same dog was on my bed and I was stroking his neck and felt something. Yep, another barley grass seed pointing directly inwards towards his skin. Successfully removed. The bindis are worse this year too. Even in the garden. I've never seen weeds grow as prolifically as they have this year. Every morning there a hundreds of healthy looking young weeds that were not there yesterday because I'd pulled them all out.

Idiot probably hadn't thought he would be picked up on camera.

I have to agree with your comment. I am not a breeder just a dog lover and there seems to be too much emphasis on what the pup looks like. It would seem to me anyway, that the OP comes across to the breeders as undecided and much too obsessed with looks. I know that there are breeders out there who do feel they are holier than thou, but they are the ones that I would steer clear of. I want an ongoing relationship with the breeder in regards to my pup, so yes, it works both ways. I like you apologize if I am wrong but..... There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting the puppy of your dreams. Of course what the pup looks like is important to the buyer. When I bought my first Cavalier I knew exactly what I wanted. I wanted a tri colour pup with symmetrical markings. I don't find asymmetrical markings attractive. The breeder was happy to sell me the pup I wanted. She saw nothing wrong in me wanting a puppy for colour and markings though had she suggested a different pup would be more suitable for me I would have gone with her choice if the pup also had what I wanted in a puppy. I did not want a different colour pup. We had exchanged emails and phone calls and met when I went to collect my puppy. I bought my Rottweiler and Cavaliers from registered breeders but I have to say in each circumstance there was little to no interest from the breeder in their pups. My young Rottweiler developed a ruptured cruciate ligament and I found the dam had the same problem. When I rang the breeder for advice she showed no interest though I wanted nothing from her but advice. I never heard from her again for the life of my dog. With my girl Cavalier, I sent pictures and a run down of the puppy after I brought her home but the breeder didn't respond and I've never heard from her. With my Cavalier boy. On arriving home I discovered he had an umbilical hernia. I called the breeder to ask if it should be repaired immediately or could it wait until I had my boy desexed. The breeder said to wait and that she would pay for the hernia repair but she also suggested having the pup desexed at what I considered to be way too young. When the desex was done and the hernia repaired the cost of the repair was only $30 so I contacted the breeder because she asked me to tell her when it had been done. Upon saying it was only $30 and I didn't want her to pay for it she told me that was great because she didn't have a spare $30. I never heard another word from that breeder but emailed her on my boy's 10th birthday to tell her what a wonderful dog he is and a few details of his life with me. I received a brief reply saying she remembered me and the stunning pup I chose. She asked no other questions about him. He is now 10 1/2 and is on medication for congestive heart failure. I haven't bothered to advise the breeder. I'd never castigate all breeders, just pointing out that not all breeders are God like. We have breeders on this forum who go above and beyond to support their puppy buyers and if I was looking for another Cavalier I would approach an interstate breeder from this forum (Hi Jed). I say "Choose your breeder as carefully as you choose your breed". Perfume if you are certain of the breed you want, hold out until you get the pup of your dreams. You know what that pup looks like. Anyone who says what the pup looks like is not important is being unrealistic.

And many people like and respect this forum, though it is not was it used to be. The reason many of us are here is because we like the forum. If you hate it, don't let the door hit you on the way out. hahahahahahaha better the devil you know I say. Look at yourselves, you give 10 points to anyone new that comes onto DOL and asks initial questions, but as soon as those questions go beyond 'what breed is right for me?' you crucify them. You tell people to do all the research they can but then you crucify anyone who says 'why don't breeders keep their websites up to date?'. Most of you appear to think you are gods and that everyone should bow down to you, let alone question why you do anything you do. There are many fantastic breeders on here but they are the ones talking to people behind the scenes, the ones that truly want to help people and not crucify them until they throw their hands up and go to a puppy farmer, and yes I have proof of this and they actually recommended the puppy farmer to me!!! Though you quoted me I trust your reply is not directed towards me as I have never bred a dog and will never breed one. What is wrong with wanting breeders to keep their websites UTD. What use is a website that's 4-5 years old? If a breeder recommended you seek out a puppy farmer you must have annoyed and frustrated that breeder beyond reason. You demand people look at themselves. Perhaps this may also apply to you.

No offence intended but today is not my day for Sarcasm. I came here in good faith and have been completely honest and open. The one who has the holier than thou attitude is you since you're of the opinion that I am not entitled to obtain a pup of my choice. You are not 'entitled to obtain' any pup unless the breeder thinks you will be a suitable owner for the pup she bred. What do you think gives you this sense of entitlement?

Ooops, double post

I share your fears of my dogs being left alone in the house with no one to feed them and care for them.
