  1. I agree with WeimMe. These young women's behaviour was trashy and they were more than likely half cut. Thank the Gods they didn't encounter others of 'their kind' because this would have spoilt everyone's trip to the beach and probably would have ended with police involvement. They were clearly a group of badly behaved bogans. Some people are just straight out stupid. They're too dumb to realise if they're walking in an off leash area of a dog beach chances are they will meet up with a dog or two. Under the circumstances, you behaved with a modicum of restraint (maybe minus 'the finger') but these trashy women would not recognise restrained behaviour if it bit them on the ar$e.
  2. Yes I read that he was on those three drugs DDD but none of them prevent or relieve nausea in fact Carafate can actually cause nausea. Nausea will almost certainly affect his appetite. Each time he refuses a meal adds to your already considerable stress. I would be asking the vet again about medication for nausea and not take no for an answer unless the vet can give you a very good reason why he's not being medicated for nausea. I hope things improve for you.
  3. DDD without me reading the whole 15 pages of this thread, is he being medicated for nausea? If he's nauseous he's probably not going to want eat.
  4. Clearly, Aussielover you are not a vet or you would not make blanket statements such as the above. Maybe some unwell dogs can be anesthetised safely, others can not. This needs to be assessed only by a qualified vet. I asked the vet should I book my dog in for a dental and he advised against it. Jules, I did buy deer antlers but my Cavs were not interested. They're too hard for the small mouth of a Cavalier KCS. He would happily chew raw meaty bones and had them for most of his life but he's had no bones since needing a flush out enema due constipation caused by a mass of crunched up bone. They were relatively soft bones too. The vet advised against any more RMB's. The bones kept his teeth clean until he had his first and only dental at 9yo but now he's older his system is unable to cope with RMB's. The tartar on the two tiny teeth behind the carnassials is a recent development. The carnassial teeth are clean as are the rest of his teeth His teeth were checked three months ago and were ok. I don't know where to go from here. I don't want him suffering dental pain on top of his congestive heart failure (for which he is medicated). edited to fix quotes (unsucsessfully)
  5. A dental under GA is usually fine for healthy dogs but what about those of us who have dogs with say, heart disease as my Cavalier has. Would you risk a GA or would you try anaesthesia free dental treatment?
  6. You posted your personal opinion. Are you suggesting this option is open to you alone and that none one should reply with their personal opinion?
  7. I think with humans there is the placebo effect it's amazing how the placebo does seem to work with some people. This of course is not the case with animals. efs
  8. Both of my Cavs had clean white teeth when they were able to have RMB. The boy had an impaction of crunched up bone that required a flush out enema under GA which put an end to bones in this house. It wasn't even a large piece of bone that was the cause of the problem, the bone was properly crunched up but caused constipation that wouldn't shift even with a capsule enema. My Cav boy was 9yo before he needed the dental and two of his tiny teeth needed to be extracted. I now give them various natural chews to help with teeth cleaning and this works well for my 9 1/2yo girl who has never needed a dental but for some reason the boy is not quite so lucky. The tartar has just recently formed on his teeth. When the vet saw him three months ago his teeth were ok. I hope he can have his teeth cleaned by the method under discussion without him needing a GA.
  9. Before this thread slips into a different matter for discussion. I use the 'view new topics' option and each day I scroll to the bottom of the first page to see who is having a birthday. Not very often does a name come up that I recognise and I've been an active member for a long time. Most birthdays listed are names of people who perhaps registered and made only a couple of posts or have never posted at all and perhaps don't even visit the forum. It seems there is no cut off period of time for when these non posters are considered to no longer be members. It seems once registered we're members for life unless of course Troy bans us for some reason. Even then banned members will occasionally show in the daily birthday list. DOL has large membership numbers but a small population of regular posters these days. Even then the most active threads are Off Topic. I miss the days when we had spirited discussions on the subject of dogs. I learned a lot I needed to know about dogs back then.
  10. Thanks for the email addy Aireldaler. My boy has congestive heart failure so I'm very reluctant for him to have a GA. I will send them an email after Christmas.
  11. I think charging her was reasonable. Afterall her dog was not securely confined to her property and the RSPCA doesn't work for nothing. As far as I know all pounds charge a release fee.
  12. I rarely visit Facebook and do prefer the forum. I just wish there was more dog discussion than off topic discussion. Where do the newbies with dogs who want info go these days. They're not coming here.
  13. Yes, I would use it. I'm seriously considering it for one of my Cavaliers who has some tartar on the two small molars behind the carnassials. I'm a bit uncertain if he would settle. His teeth are not in bad condition but he won't let me get at these back teeth and better he has a dental now before there is a need for more extensive dental work. This dog is a well behaved 10 1/2yo. Strangely my other Cavalier who is 9 1/2yo has never had a dental and her teeth are perfectly white and clean. Would the OP please post your contact details again. I'm not able to find them anywhere.
  14. I also find there's not nearly as much dog discussion as there used to be. The forum is mostly Off Topic discussion now. This forum used to be the place to go to learn about dog health, behaviour, training and really everything about dogs. Sadly, not any more.
  15. Rappie, thank you for that important information. It's good news for those of us who use monthly meds to keep our dogs worm and heartworm free.
  16. No one damn well knows for certain if dogs/animals go to heaven. We don't know if humans go to heaven but many of us have faith that we do.
  17. There are excellent breeders in Vic who are happy to sell you a female puppy on the limited register on contract. In the contract you both sign there will be a clause that you do not breed with the puppy. Dogs on the Limited Register are not to be bred so the breeder will not want you to send the dog to them for breeding purposes. That only happens if the pup is on the Main Register and if you agree to 'breeders terms'. Breeders terms usually mean you will pay less for the dog or else the breeder will give you a pup from the litter. I would not buy a pup on on breeders terms. When I want to buy a pup I want to own it outright and I want to make all decisions in regard to the puppy. Have you had a look at the breeders listed on the puppy page of the DOL website? Over the years I've bought two female Rottie pups on contract on the main register that I had no intention of breeding from and I had both girls desexed. All other Rotties I've been lucky enough to own have been rescue dogs. All my rescues except one were bitches and they were lovely, calm dogs. However I took older rescues and their quiet calm demeanor may have been due to their age. That said they were excellent watch dogs and barked furiously if a stranger came to the door until I told them it was ok. They would not let anyone in unless I told them it was ok. One day while I was out walking my two Cavaliers my son came here with a friend. My son was welcomed by the Rotties but they would not allow his friend to enter the house as they didn't know him. As soon as I returned they allowed the guy to enter the house with me. I so miss having a Rottie in my life. They're a wonderful breed.
  18. We seem to have a lot of mosquitoes all year round. This is probably due to the neighbours at the back of me having a spa with stagnant water most of the year. The only time they attend to their spa is if they want to use it. Then they empty it and fill with fresh water that they again allow to stagnate until they want to use the spa again. They use their spa only a couple of times a year. In view of the above I medicate the dogs with a heartworm preventative every month, all year round. Are the mosquitoes getting bigger? We have some huge ones here.
  19. Please throw it out and don't even consider feeding it to your dog.
  20. Most good Rottweiler breeders will sell only on contract. You can certainly buy a female pup without it being on breeders terms but the breeder will probably have a clause in the contract that you agree not to breed the puppy. This is because the breeder wants to keep her lines pure and doesn't want people back yard breeding with their bitches that should not be bred. I would not want to buy a dog from a breeder unless that breeder sold on contract. Are you against buying on contract because you have plans to breed the puppy you buy?
  21. I think you've caught the beginning of a hot spot. A breeder friend of mine swears by the original brown Listerine to clear up hot spots.
  22. I think you may have left it a little late to find a boarding kennel that has not already been booked out for the Christmas period.
  23. I've never had a dog with hot spots but a friend who had dogs with these problems said she used the original brown coloured Listerine on the offending areas and it cleared up the hot spots quickly.
  24. Animals were not even mentioned in our religious studies at school. It was mostly catechism, the sacraments and gospels. I don't recall any mention of animals and I would remember because we always had a pet dog at home.
  25. Same here. I was educated by nuns at a Catholic College. efs
