Keeping Puppy Mentally Active While Eating Their Meals
cavNrott replied to NoodleNut's topic in Puppy Chat
I will put dry food in treat balls for the dogs to entertain themselves but their main meals are dished up in their bowls and they are allowed to eat in peace. -
It sounds like she might have a UTI. See if you can get a sample of her urine in a clean container and take it with her to the vet. If you can't get a sample, take her to the vet anyway. UTI's are painful and antibiotics are needed.
-
Is she peeing the normal amount or just doing small pees? Does she seem to be straining at all?

I'm so very sorry for your loss of the beautiful Asher. Run free now lovely boy

Haven, if I were you I would have it sent to pathology. Then you can be sure that it has clear margins. Pathology is the only way to know for sure. You wouldn't plan on chemo unless there is evidence of rogue cells.

Haven, I will be thinking of you and Nova tomorrow Haven and hoping for the best. Please keep us posted.

Yep, those pics of Ash's son show the general gist of it Kiash but Sophie made a lot more mess and spread it further around. I should've known she was up to something because she's usually wherever I am and she wasn't around when I was getting ready. At least Ash's son didn't have a big grin on his face like Sophie had when I caught her at it. I asked her what she thought she was doing and she didn't even have the good grace to look guilty. She looked very pleased with herself. Aha! so it's a family trait is it? Same when she stole the chicken fat off the counter. I asked her 'what did you just do? She gave me a cheeky look. She knows very well that counter surfing is not on, she was so happy she got one over me. I think yesterday was the best day she's had in a while. The park thing was hilarious, I'm glad no one else was there to see her in action. She was acting like a crazy dog but she had a great time. I usually limit her exercise to about 20 minutes and she lets me know when she's had enough but yesterday she ran around and rolled for over half an hour. It's no wonder she's tired today. Though she's nudged me with the ball for a game of fetch a couple of times. She's such a funny girl with a quirky sense of humour and a sweet, gentle nature. Oonga we see the oncologist on the 12th May. Hopefully Sophie will still be doing well. Jodie that's excellent news about Ollie's leg You must be so relieved that there's no surgery planned.

Thanks for asking after Sophie. Sophie had a case of the silly's and reverted to puppyhood yesterday. I was getting ready to take her to the off leash park and walked into the family room to be confronted with torn up toilet paper everywhere. She was the culprit, I caught her in the act of tearing up a full roll and scattering it around. She pinched a new roll from the box I keep in the second bathroom. Her silly's continued all day. At the park she was running around at full speed and every so often threw herself on the ground for a good roll, not only in the grass but also in the dirt, then took off at full pelt and did the same thing over and over. Luckily we had the park to ourselves because she looked like a dog possessed. It was cold and windy so she was wearing a coat that now needs a wash. I loved watching her yesterday, we had a day of fun and she had me laughing with her various antics all day. She would come up to me under the guise of a loving nuzzle and pinch things out of the pocket of my jeans. She counter surfed for the first time ever and pinched a piece of chicken fat off the bench when I was trimming a carcass. I was standing right there, I couldn't believe it. She's never done that before. She's getting away with things now and taking advantage of it. I'm ok with her doing whatever she likes as long as it's not dangerous for her and she's having fun. I'd say she's feeling very well to feel like doing all that. It's so good to see her full of mischief and fun. She had that look of mischief on her face all day. It's raining today so she's staying in. I'm going out to get her some more organic vegies and yoghurt so she can spend the afternoon in rest and recuperation. Apart from that tumour in her mouth which is growing so quickly, to see Sophie she looks fit and healthy. I'll speak again with the oncologist about debulking the tumour. I think I know why she's not keen and wants to leave it be. Evidently if the blood supply is disturbed the cancer will seed to other parts of her body very quickly. I'll find out at our next consult. I trust the onco and know her decisions are in Sophie's best interest.

Yes, you stop walking then she has to do it in the one place.

Pulling On The Lead - Backwards!
cavNrott replied to ruthless's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Ruthless are you walking Angel on her own or with the other dogs when she lags behind? If you are walking them together I suggest walking Angel on her own until she's comfortable with being out and about. I don't walk my dogs in heel for a casual walk. That's no fun for the dog. I would train Angel to know the heel position but would only put her in heel for a short distance. She needs to enjoy her walk. I tell my dogs to heel if they pull. We walk a short distance in heel, then shortly after I give them a release command....I use 'easy' so they can walk without having to concentrate on heel. They are allowed the full length of the lead and only get put into heel if they pull. I have one dog who will pull like mad at the beginning of her walk. It's not fear, it's excitement and she wants to get to the park as quickly as possible. She never pulls on the way home. She's told to heel every time she pulls. She gets the message fairly quickly. Will Angel lag if you have a handful of treats? It might be worth holding treats in your left hand at her nose level so she can smell them and will keep up the pace instead of lagging. -
Update On My Baby With Syringomyeila
cavNrott replied to JAL's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yes it was nasty the way JAL was attacked by one member. I'm glad the nasty posts were removed. In fact as it turned out this 'knowledgeable' person didn't know as much as she thought she did and was most unhelpful. Please keep us update on Chanel JAL. I'm glad to hear she is still doing ok. -
I'm so very sorry for your loss. R.I.P

What obedience training has Marley had? It sounds like he thinks he's in charge and should make the decisions. Time to get him into training and show him that the leader makes all decisions and he's not it.

Cold Weather And Australian Cattle Dogs
cavNrott replied to andoria2007's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Buy a warm coat for your dog if it must sleep outside. 8 degrees is damn cold and it's going to get colder. Can the dog not sleep inside the house? -
Return IT to the breeder urgently. If you did not buy this puppy from a breeder then surrender him/her (I don't know which gender because you refer only to IT) to a reputable rescue group as soon as possible. This is a baby puppy. You are expecting far too much. Chew things and toys don't train puppies. Training is the responsibility of the owners and the behaviour of the puppy will reflect the efforts (or otherwise) of the owners. If nothing is working then it's not the fault of the puppy. IT doesn't know anything until you teach IT. In other words, you get out of a puppy what you put into it. IT doesn't purposely urinate everywhere through the house at all. Like a baby human, a baby puppy has no control over bowels and bladder. The reason it's peeing inside is because you are not teaching IT what you want IT to do. This pup sounds to be doing exactly what normal baby puppies do. Please return to the breeder or surrender this puppy ASAP. Give this puppy a chance to find a home where IT will be trained in how to behave and to be loved as a puppy should be.

Update On My Baby With Syringomyeila
cavNrott replied to JAL's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
JAL, I'm glad you came back to update us. I've been thinking about you and wondering how Chanel was doing. It's good to hear that she is going well despite having this horrible health issue. Please keep us posted. -
Dog Going Bonkers/possible Health Problem - Please Help.
cavNrott replied to nomis's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Ok, this may seem like a silly question but your first post states this happens on a daily basis and your second quote states no one is home between 6am and 8am. My question is if no one is home then how do you know it happens every day and who ties him up to his kennel? What time of day/night is there someone home with him? Perhaps if you can explain and reply to my questions re your first two quotes me may be able to nut out a solution to the question you pose in your last quote here. -
Dog Going Bonkers/possible Health Problem - Please Help.
cavNrott replied to nomis's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Can you take this elderly dog inside the house to sleep at night? This would probably solve your problems and his as well. By tying him up outside when he is obviously so distressed will cause him even more distress. It sounds like something is going on that you are unware of and the dog is showing signs of fear and panic with his drooling and panting. His chewing the back door is not a sign of aggression, it's a sign of panic and fear. He wants to be inside where he feels safe. Did the dog live inside when your mother was alive or has he always been an outside dog? Does he spend time in the house with you? Whatever it is, this dog is not happy and I second those who suggested having a full and thorough investigation by a vet. A quick once over will probably reveal nothing. It doesn't sound like a behavioural problem to me. He sounds like a dog who is suffering panic, is very frightened by something and is telling you he is distressed. If it was behavioural you would see evidence of this at other times, not just at that time of the morning. -
Jed: That's a good idea to put the flaxseed oil in the freezer. I'd never heard of that. I was advised to keep the bottle in the packet even though it's kept in the fridge. The freezer thing might allow me to buy the bigger bottle so it works out less expensive. Jodie: That cancer dog site is great isn't it. I've read so much info and got plenty of tips from there. Sophie takes 5-6 maxolon tablets a day. The nausea was bothering her for a while but on this dose she doesn't have any more nausea. Zucchini is said to be a great veg for fighting cancer. Sophie has it every day now.

Jodie, I just found the website that has the cottage cheese and flaxseed oil info. You need to scroll right down to the bottom of the page and read the BUDWIG PROTOCOL. Dr Budwig is the scientist who discover the link between flaxseed and cottage cheese. http://www.caninecancer.com/nutrition See what you think of it. I've been feeding it to Sophie since end of January. I do sometimes mix in an organic egg...or salmon. You may need to add a little water or milk, it's a bit gunky. Her diet itself is for humans and says no meat etc., but Dr. Ogilvie has said the flaxseed and cheese works well with a good healthy cancer starving diet for a dog. Cheers, Anne edited because I keep leaving the last letter off words.

I know what you mean by all the other stuff he takes. Poor Sophie is on so many tablets every day. Sophie has the fish oil and glucosamine combined capsule too. She has coQ10 and milk thistle as well as all the prescribed stuff. Poor girl just about rattles. Do you give Ollie any vitamin supplements? Sophie too has organic yoghurt, we use Mungali Creek yoghurt. She has it every night with goats milk. All dogs have that as a nightcap when give Sophie her last dose of meds between midnight and 1am.

The recipe that I have said 1/2 a cup of cottage cheese (or quark) with a tablespoon of Flaxseed oil. Since Sophie is 48kg I double the quantity for her. She likes the cottage cheese more than the quark, the quark is very dense and is expensive too. It costs about $10 for a small container at Macro. Evidently there is a reaction between the cottage cheese and the Flaxseed that's helpful for cancer dogs. You need to mix it very well. If I can find the website with the info I'll pm you the addy. The Flaxseed needs to be the cold pressed liquid in the fridge at the health food store. I think it's only good for a month maximum after opening so get the small bottle.
