  1. Having a GSD he is very specific - Inspector Rex or sleep!
  2. Have you offered to take the dog? They might be happy to give it up with a new baby, depending on how you approach them. Unless with all the complaints, it's too late. Another angle to try... If the outside is a mess, what's the inside like? Is the baby in danger/being neglected? That would put child protection in the picture. Sounds like the dog might not be the only one needing saving from worthless humans. Good luck with everything. Hope it all ends well and soon
  3. I would never put a "beware of the dog" sign up as this implies you have a dangerous dog - was informed this by a cop/friend. Also told if someone accesses your yard and gets bitten they have every right to sue you for keeping an aggressive dog. Apparently, dogs defending their territory does not exist in human law proving the law is an ass! On the children wandering - from my personal experience with Child Protection they are unable to do anything unless the child will be dead in 24hrs. They are understaffed and over regulated. However, keep reporting and record all your reports (daily if necessary) and if nothing is done, contact one of the current affairs shows. This appears to be the only way to get through to the government. Good luck on both fronts
  4. Just another way Pink shows she's just like the rest of us (but with more money).
  5. I think it might just be that your store is either out or may not stock it. The working dog was the one I think they discontinued. Might pay to try pet food stores as they stock better ranges than woolies or coles and much cheaper too! Good luck finding it.
  6. Another week and no change on the scales. Was away for 3 days to do chrissy shopping and thought with lots of walking and carrying combined with no snacking there should have been some movement.
  7. Do you have a line of communication with the Gus' breeder. I only started showing 3 years ago and the best advise I get is always from the breeder. They should be able to advise you regarding conformation of your breed and whether you have a good example of it. If they don't think Gus is "right", offer to help with handling their show dogs. Just be being around the ring, you learn so much. Good luck and if you do join the show "circus", enjoy the experience.
  8. I would love the opportunity to take my dog more places. When I ask they are accepting till they find out he's a GSD. Apparently small dogs are OK but not large aggressive ones. Guess that's descrimination I always mention he's obedience trained and offer references if they would like. This seems to appease but still have much more restrictions than little temperamental fluffies. In the end, I don't bother. We need to get so much info across but it's just how? Schools are already too bogged down with junk that parents should be teaching so I don't think that's the solution. The government have no idea what the truth is and advisors are very biased. Even the so-called pet experts (RSPCA, Animal Welfare, Delta to name a few) are getting too top heavy with self-professed "experts" that their messages are heading in a direction that worries me. The only thing I can do is get out there with my "dangerous" dog and allow him to promote himself. He hasn't let me down yet. If we all do similar, maybe others will copy - it can't do any harm can it?
  9. Weasles, love kelpies but not in position to get 2nd dog. Waiting for my 2legged girls to get older before going down that path again. Maybe in the future.... Freundhund, do the HGH imports have current shape or old fashioned? And are they going to be shown or just straight working? No real relevance other than my curiosity. Thanks again for all info. Finally have somewhere to start referencing.
  10. Went this morning and completed all 8x1min runs with 1.5 walk intervals. Thought it would kill me but heart rate finally back to normal
  11. Thanks for the link Kavik. Had a quick glance but looking forward to reading in full when I have time. Freundhund - Does Jane train for real life and has she any experience with GSD? I don't think trial training is really what I am after ATM. I will PM you if I change my mind about what I am really after. Still new to this so it could happen as I get more informed. Thanks for the response.
  12. I'll try to join you. Going for walk after 2-legged girls get on school bus in morning. Well done on the loss so far. Just think you sent the kg's this way
  13. Not an easy decision and I feel for you. My life fell apart about 10 yrs ago and I had to make a decision to lose 1 dog. I tried to re-home the younger one but at 6 no-one wanted him. I ended up having the older one PTS at 9. (Both large dogs) The vet was excellent and comforted me while understanding and supporting my decision. I still remember him saying that she was getting on and probably not far from her life going downhill anyway. Took a long time to get over and it still upsets me. My only advise is to think carefully about all your options and go with your head as well as your heart. Good luck with whatever you choose.
  14. I recently moved out of Adelaide and am looking at running small amount of stock in the future. I currently have a 4yo GSD and was wondering if anyone has trained one to herd in real life situations. I looked into herding before leaving Adelaide but, since moving, have seen real herding and realised how different the two are. Even trailing with these dogs is different. I tried searching these forums with no luck and goggle only led to overseas breeders or u-tube videos of trials & mucking around. I know GSD's competitively trail in SA but I am looking for more than title-training. We have done obedience and he currently shares the backyard with a lamb we rescued from our cattle-grid. Any help would be appreciated. (I know some of the questions can get people heated so if I have written anything that offends, please realise I am just giving all the info so I can hopefully get help) Thanks
  15. Good luck Sheena. Understand where you are coming from as I have the same probs since moving out of Adelaide. I have downloaded the start of a running program from the internet and suggest you have a look. Google c25k which means couch potato to 5km. It is a 9 week interval training program. I'm stuck on week one as I find that's enough for the limited time I manage to get out. I also don't always have the time to do the whole lot but use walking the driveway as warm up and cool down so it doesn't matter how far I get. Best of luck with it and will try to keep watching your progress.
  16. I found ages can also be an issue. Only problem I've had with mixing all males (entire & desexed) was between 2 who were similar age. We just watched and reinforced pack order depending on whose house it was and it didn't become an issue. As suggested, can you get them together beforehand so Christmas Day will have one less thing to worry about. Good luck

    This Is Cool..

Interesting choice. I hope it works out well. Just hope they don't get the same reputation as other police dogs or we may see another breed banned ;)
  18. Love this book. Think I borrow it from Library annually - too scummy to buy when I can get for free
  19. Mental note : Socks on at Bikergirl's and no kissing the dog...
  20. I have found dog attacks make the news when there is not much else to report. If they start running "good news" stories or seem to be digging for something to fill that 6-6:30 time slot, you can guarantee after 2 days they will run a dog attack story. It will give them enough news to cover until something real comes along. This has been happening for at least the last 10 years here in SA. I know because I have been getting upset about it. I even contacted our local paper, asking them to run some good dog stories. Other obedience instructors joined me at our local park and the paper ran a story on how obedience training can help prevent attacks. Numbers did increase at training immediately after. If you have or know a good dog "incident", contact your local media and ask them to run the story. It will be a bit different from what others are printing and they may just be interested. We need to keep being proactive or we will only hear the bad.
  21. I have only been around showing for 3 years and now my boy has his Ch title, I only drop him in certain shows. Main reasons are travel (I have recently moved), and other exhibitors within my breed. I always congratulate anyone who beats me regardless of whether I am handling my own or a friends' dog. I find it extremely rude not being congratulated by them on the odd occasion we win. I have tolerated being snubbed or ignored by these people but sheer rudeness at challenge and BOB?? I also have 12yo and 10yo daughters who desperately want to show. The last few times there has actually been junior handlers listed for the show they have been cancelled supposedly due to lack of numbers. The last time this occurred, I know of at least 4 kids who wanted to participate and the one before, 8 kids. How many do they need?? If these young kids aren't encouraged, where will the next generation come from? I could fill another 3 pages with complaints about junior handler issues but won't bother. I'll just do what others here are doing - sign them up and send them straight into the ring. (At least I have met some great people with other breeds that have offered to help my daughters.)
  22. Thanks for the thread Emery. Sounds just like my dog. He's not motivated by food either and is not over fed as I can still see his ribs after upping his food to 3x what he was getting over 3 meals. He is a slug in the showring and won't even put his ears up. I have had a long chat with the breeder and will be trying new things. If anyone else has input, would love to hear too.
