  1. Oh wow and I just bought a Kong for my GR to see if he'd use it. Oh well. He has his own stuffed animal (which he loves to death and it's not a chew toy just a companion he carts around), do you think he'd like a Kong Wubba friend? Doesn't fetch a ball, but will fetch his Elly (the elephant) Anyone know how long the free ship will last? eep, bit the bullet and bought anyway.... Even bought something for the new puppy we don't have yet. I can keep it for her when she comes.
  2. Thanks Steve :) I thought it would be strange for someone to write Reg-Breeder and not be one, but who knows these days.
  3. Thanks for the reply, I didn't decide to go with them anyway. Just too much what if's and I really want to go it right. I wouldn't be able to go see their home or parents beforehand because we are interstate. Just more waiting :)
  4. Not rushing, just looking and I've emailed a few breeders sans litters. Went to a school orientation and worried how crazy life could be end of jan/feb. thinking more before Christmas would be better expecially as we have time off over the holidays. Sure Christmas Day and Boxing Day is full on, but around then might be better. I am trying so hard to be patient. And I appreciate all the advice and support. Been spending more time than usual with my big boy to ease my mind. He loves it.
  5. So found 2 litters and was rejected. Didn't want to frieght or didn't have any girls available as pets. There was a show quality one for more, but I don't know if its worth having such a beautiful smart girl as a pet. She would be better of in better hands. So more waiting...
  6. I'm in the same situation!! We are going with Beagle though, and my Golden is almost 3 now. We had a cocker growing up and he was an amazing dog, terrible to train and so dopey, but had so much love to give. Who knows if it was him or his upbringing, but he lived over 12 years and I could never replace him. Best of luck in your decision!!
  7. Oh awesome Donatella!! I am currently trying to formulate how to tell my husband I need one of these...
  8. This does ring alarm bells for me, I have to say.. I have an 11 year old poodle x that we got (11 years ago) from an ad in the paper, and in hindsight all the signs of a puppy farm of very dodgy situation were there, but we didn't realise at the time. It was the same situation - the woman's "friend" was the one with the mum and this woman was just helping her while the actual owner was away. Got to the house, there was just one pup there, and we got her. She was supposedly a poodle x bichon, but there's just no way in hell.. Obviously now I wouldn't change her for the world and she's my little heart dog. But looking back, I'm sure she's from dodgy circumstances. I'm not saying that the person you called isn't the real deal, because god, how would I know. But just.. keep your wits about you and don't be fooled by a cute puppy! It takes a strong will to walk away from a cute puppy, as well all know, but make it a head decision, not a heart one :) Thanks for this :) I am trying really hard to be patient! Really, really hard. I've just ordered a few smallish things to prepare. There will be a puppy in this house one day, I just have to find the right one. And you will! Just like all the good things in life, the more you wait, the better it is in the end. In a few weeks/months, you'll having a puppy in your arms, think back to think back to this thread and go 'THANK GOD I WAITED!!! Otherwise I wouldn't have this little one!!' ETA - another suggestion is that, when you go and visit breeders, don't take money with you, unless it's for a deposit (and even then, think about it..). I purposefully DIDN'T take money when I went to visit a breeder to meet a dog I was interested in, because I knew that once I met her I'd be smitten and want to take her then and there. Which happened - I tried not to, but I fell in love. I even loved her more than her little pup, who I met! (Thankfully my partner had brought deposit money along as a backup without telling me and we gave the deposit and took her home a few weeks later, when her pups were sold and she'd been desexed etc). But still, sometimes making things a bit harder is better in the long run. Thanks for the boost of confidence. I have to try and get myself back in to reality for a bit today. Leave it for tomorrow.
  9. I have a family member who bought a Cav from reg breeder and it wasn't what she hoped for at all. He was stubborn, hard to train and all in all a little shit. She used to have cockers so I assume she thought cav would be easier being a smaller dog. Anyway, the dog now lives with another family member, and is doing better with a dog friend. But I agree with another poster, Cav's looks like a cute lap dog but they're not, they are hard work.
  10. Thank you, some of the websites listed are not quite up to date, so I will have to call around. I somewhat have my heart set on finding a breeder before they are ready, instead of finding them right on 8 weeks and ready to go. I'd prefer to have her here as soon as I can, and also have some extra time to prepare. Is it always like this when buying a new puppy? The anxiety, excitement, and general craziness? (In the sense I haven't been able to function properly having my nose on the ipad or computer searching, reading and planning???)

  12. Saw this last night and thought I would share. A scientific explanation as to why things are 'cute' and possibly the reason behind dogs being 'mans best friend'.
  13. Just be careful, pretty much anyone will tell you they are a registered breeder, even if they aren't ANKC registered. Start with this list, http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/puppies/beagle.asp I don't know how I missed this page in the few years I've been here.
  14. Well I called and it was a strange situation, lady who answered was caring for the bitches as the owner was away. She gave me long list of bloodlines and tests etc. so I do think they are the real deal. Problem was, the last female went 10 mins before I called. If I didn't hesitate I wouldn't have missed out. A bit sad, but maybe was meant to be.
  15. Thanks :) I only have a mobile number, so I might call and have a chat a bit more and see. From what I navigated on that website there are only 2 'reg breeders' in NSW for Beagles. So hopefully she is one of them.
  16. Hi I just wanted to know how to tell if someone is really a 'registered breeder' or just stating they are? Is there a license number they need to hold? Someone in the state I can contact? I found an add on Gumtree but can't find any details on the breeder on here or their state club. So wondering if it is worth pursuing considering they are out of state. Thanks in advance.
  17. Hi There, This is a thread recently with great suggestions - Over Here Depending on where you are though, I have found - https://www.pawsforlife.com.au to be the cheapest with cheapest postage on things like flea/tick/heartworm treatment and also dog food.
  18. Oh Ellz, that is a special name I'm sure she will be a very loved companion. Husbands name is Amelia Pond (Yes after Doctor Who) so he can say, "Come along Pond!" I was thinking more Odette, Ophelia or Aurora. None of these names show up anywhere on 'dog naming websites'. I tried renaming our rescue dog to Hamlet, Ham or Hammy for short, but the kids were very vocal about keeping Simba. So it has stuck. Also - How cute is this!
  19. Nawww! All these new cute puppies! I can put my name down as waiting, but I don't even have a date yet! We have just decided on getting a female Beagle pup. Now just to find her! We did our tax last night a LOT more than we expected so I told my hisband we'll put some away for puppy and extras. So excited! Husband has already got a name, which I think is cute and quirky but I am unsure of naming before we even find her! Going to be collecting items before she gets here. Maybe as a first I'll buy a pink collar and a stuffed doll to send when we find the right breeder. Can you tell I'm excited? I feel like I'm preparing for a new (human) baby!
  20. Just did a spreadsheet up looking at Flea/worm and food + postage to see what was the best deal. I found https://www.pawsforlife.com.au/ to be the best with a flat rate of $6.95 and an auto schedule option. By far the best I found, and I looked over 15 websites. I'd love to be corrected if I have missed one!
  21. EDIT: I did go back and re read, I must've missed something said above. I dont' know if what I'm looking for is plausable. But i'll leave it here anyway. Sorry to hijack and ask my own questions, but is there such a pen/safe zone/crate that would confine a Beagle pup and then allow the older dog, Golden Retriever, access when we aren't home. I don't know if this would work, but I had a visual in my head. Just so pup isn't alone when we are out, and older dog can keep company. (If it works out that way.) I have a big corner of the room I was thinking of blocking off with a wooden childs playpen with everything in it, including a big bed for my GR. Only problem is i'd prefer him to go outside to do his thing, so something he'd be able to get out of easily. I also assume Beagle pups migh be little enough to wriggle through the wooden playpen.
  22. I just wanted to put my hand up and say I'm a general public that had no idea about the benefit of registered breeders. It all started when I questioned the price of a pet store pup, which led to findings of puppy mills! I then looked elsewhere like gumtree and petlink to find mostly BYB. I then came here confused, and found out exactly why registered breeders are worth the extra! What about education within the community? This isn't something you could do alone though, it would take clubs, media and government funding. Stories like the Sick Border Collie Pup make fantastic factual background for these.
  23. For anyone reading this, considering another breed, the temperaments, personalities and activity levels can vary enormously within a litter in many other breeds. I have had Border Collies for nearly 30 years and most litters, not just mine, have a wide variety in every litter. For this reason responsible BC breeders never definitely promise puppies to anyone until they are at least 6 weeks of age so they can best match them to the right homes. With my last litter I still had 10 buyers waiting for my last puppy but turned them all down as unsuitable for that particular puppy. I kept her until the right buyer came along. The more demanding the breed is to live with the more important it is to match the dog to owner. Beagles are a pretty easy going breed, unless you want to train for competition obedience, when they become a real challenge. Thanks for this, I do love the look of BC but there is no way I'd be able to fully care for one. We have a friend with one and she is A LOT of work. Absolutely adorable though!
  24. for the life of me i cant remember what or whatever gave me that idea? anyway dont know if theres a thread it should go into but everyone really watch out for snakes, the daughter of one of my last girls is at the vets fighting for her life, they told her owner another 5 minutes later n no possible hope, she has already had to be resuciated after a cardic arrest, so all who know darling buffie are praying for her. why ho why cant they run away instead of towards a snake Oh no! I almost lost a cat to a snake! Yellow whip tail. Was complete bag of bones when I found him. He was never himself after that and was scared of life itself. He lives with some dear friends who have no other animals or kids and is doing much better. A case of selflessness sending him to a better home, but I do miss him. I do get to visit whenever I like though, so it isn't so bad. I'm glad that there is a term I was thinking about. I'm not convinced on anything like that, but it's worth knowing everything right? Steve, you are killing me here with your cute photos! I fell in love with one only a week ago now. A rehome, I was so clucky I tidied the house, baked some doggie biscuits and couldn't sleep the day before we met her. I'm still sad we missed her, but I keep telling myself that everything happens for a reason. After what I know, she was a pet store pup, smaller than average which apparently means problems may occur for her later on. I'm understanding the not seeing pups beforehand too, I've never bought a pup from a litter, only from pounds and rescues, so I guess it's required to get a feel for temperament etc. but when it's pups from the same litter, of dogs you know like your own children, it's easy to mould them to suit the family. I'm all giggles and cluck lol! Had dreams last night of converting a section of the house into a pup area with a playpen. Building some outdoor play equip that children and dogs can play on together. Cute bow ties and bow matching accessories for the dogs. Even have her name picked out, if we end up with a girl. Have I said thank you enough yet?
