  1. Are puppies sedated for the HD test? (same as adult dogs?)
  2. jess11 - also, make sure you come visit us in the JS/Samoyed thread Lots of discussion about our white fluffies http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/221234-japanese-spitz-and-samoyed-thread/page__st__2790__gopid__5613338
  3. Sway - I say that from the perspective that as far as I know (and breeders I've talked to know) - no JS has displayed a HD-related problem (registered breeders). There are some that have been scored, but majority of breeders feel that since no dogs have come up with hip problems, there is no need for scoring. Same reason they don't test for PRA - no cases reported of any dogs going blind from PRA. The dogs I know that have been scored have come up 0:0 I believe. Also, the Cambridge Inherited Diseases in Dogs database doesn't list Jap Spitz as one of the breeds that genetically suffers from HD. (I don't know whether this database is comprehensive though)
  4. Hi Jess11 - HD is fairly rare in JS - to the point where most dogs used to breed are not scored. I would definitely get a 2nd opinion from a specialist. HD can only be properly diagnosed by taking an X-ray and sending the films to be read by an expert - you also need to find someone good to take the X-rays (you will find recommendations here on DOL) Which breeder did your JS come from? Have you contacted them about this? The ethical breeders I know would be very concerned to find one of their puppies with HD.
  5. About to start on the pre-course games today had to go out to buy a notebook to write stuff down in - I usually keep notes on my computer, but I think physically writing will be good.
  6. fuzzy - essentially it's 5 games each week over 7 weeks. I figured the festive season is the best for me since I can work from a lot of the time to make sure we play a game each day.
  7. I used paypal and it worked out to A$402 - but the rates change on PayPal hourly, but it should be close to that. I can't wait to start!! The "training as games" philosophy I think will really work for us
  8. I can't see that this has been posted anywhere else - so just in case people didn't see it on OzShow or in an email from Rysup 6 CHINESE CRESTED DOG 2 JAPANESE CHIN 8 PEKINGESE 12 PUG 12 TIBETAN SPANIEL 8 AKITA 3 SHIBA INU 12 SIBERIAN HUSKY 1 CHOW CHOW 7 JAPANESE SPITZ 18 LHASA APSO 2 Shar Pei 16 SHIH TZU 2 TIBETAN TERRIER Total Entry 109 (Permission to cross-post)
  9. I think I'm going to sign up - Ziva's recall is sometimes great, othertimes non-existant! I started using Crate Games a while ago, then stopped for a few months - just started up again 2 days ago.
  10. Done - we can set up a franchise around Australia
  11. Building something like this and Kepala, but in Sydney is on my wish list for when I win Lotto
  12. Another quick question based on the comment about all the blue staffys - I wonder if this could be retrospectively applied as well? (Or if someone can give me the link to the old thread where it might have been discussed - I've tried searching but maybe I'm using the wrong terms)
  13. This sounds like a great move! To clarify - say I've been showing or doing another ANKC for 2-3 yrs (as an individual) and decide to breed, I register a prefix but only 6 months after registration, I have a litter - I cannot register to be on DOL or advertise any limited reg puppies?
  14. I got to the $100 really quickly with a few sets of DVDs - now onto toy shopping
  15. i wasnt but i miscarried lastweek big hugs
  16. Yep - I'd be interested I'm such a novice at dog ownership, the obvious needs to be stated to me
  17. GayleK - could non-conformation sports like herding be seen as more friendy because more than one dog can gain a pass towards a title on the day? My understanding is that everyone who did well enough (to the standard) can pass. Whereas in conformation - only one dog and one bitch within the breed can come away with Ch points.
  18. That is such a shame - I grew up on a house that backed onto the walking track towards the mangroves. We moved away about 10 yrs ago, but we'll have to get down there this weekend and check it out before it becomes restricted for dogs (unless it's already restricted?)
  19. Welcome jebee All good questions and I think you've basically got it down - but not all breeders may be registered with the Breed Club and this doesn't always indicate a reputable breeder. I don't know what the politics is like around vizsla and boxer breeders - but some breeders may choose to stay away from a breed club because of it. I'd also be interested in how they match puppies to buyers - what sort of temperaments are the parents? Do they pick a puppy for you? (based on your needs) Breeders I know are very careful about what sort of homes their beloved puppies go to - so they might be looking at you to see if you're a good puppy home as well
  20. Have you tried using the Dogzonline puppy ads? I've found that calling is the best way (rather than email). I haven't seen any ads before where it says that blocked numbers will not be answered (but I'm fairly sure it's super easy to unblock your number on your mobile, make the call, and then re-block) - have you tried calling anyone yet?
  21. Good on you - I always say congrats to the winners as well - basic good sportspersonship (if that's a word!), some say thankyou, others ignore me - doesn't worry me at all. For a while I was bringing my uni work to a show - but it was a nice relaxing environment to do the work in :D
  22. Very nice words GayleK Someone mentioned about other dog activities - we also train OB and have been to a DWD workshop - I like the fact that every dog that does well to the written standard/requirements can get a pass towards the title or qualification. I know that can't be the case in conformation shows - but I feel more encouraged to try one of these other activities (when Ziva is old enough). Also, on young people in showing - I'm not sure if I'm classified as young (32), but having been to shows most weekends for the last 3-4 months - every young person I've chatted to in my group (non-sporting), except 1, who is involved in showing comes from a family who already shows/breeds. I'm the only person who is new to showing (and owning a dog) that I've met so far, besides Katie P (also in JS) I'm always chatting to strange people - Ziva is a great ice breaker coz she's so cute and friendly :D
