  1. She worked very well Linda! Very well done and much deserved. Thanks so very much to you & Jodie for helping tie down the OZ Trail gazebo with about 100 meters of rope to keep it from blowing away in the winds. It helped so much to have you both there. Especially as I had to go into Top Dog 1st & then return straight back in for 2nd. Very stressful! Also much appreciation to Jodie, for handling Violet for me.
  2. fantastic result CC - and I was lucky enough to see you win it last year with Violet. So nice to hand over the baton to another one of your kids. Well done Thank you for your very kind words. Coming from yourself, whose dogs are just magic to watch working means a lot
  3. I am so frozen & exhausted, having been out in the freezing high winds, rain & icy cold, at day 1 of The Dogs Victoria State Obedience Trials today, that I MAY have already, posted this, elsewhere, by mistake. If so, hope you will forgive my shameless bragging My 4 year old silver Standard Poodle, "ROXY", formally know as Dual CH. (O.CH.) Cosalta G'day Roxy RAE JDX AD ET, won the final run offs & the title of Victorian top Obedience Dog of the Year 2013 This is my 4th year in a row, winning the title of Top Obedience Dog in the State. The previous 3 years the finals were won by my older Poodle "VIOLET CRUMBLE"
  4. Thanks!! It is positive reinforcement when all the effort pays off Roxy & Violet are enthusiastic & a lot of fun to train yet I find it is still hard work for me to train for UDX level
  5. By mistake I posted this elsewhere on the forum so please forgive my shameless indulgence in bragging in 2 places My 4 year old ROXY worked very enthusiastically in the rain mud & cold & now thanks to the wonderful Trials Albury put on, & to Judges Yvonne Ross & Gordon Parsons she now has 2 nice UDX passes. Those homemade cakes & scrumptious pumpkin made by Val warmed us up. Thanks again VAL!! I was also delighted that my 11 year old Violet, worked exuberantly (I guess she likes the cold & rain ) & won High In Trial today with 196 from Open
  6. Despite the pouring rain on Saturday & ice cold weather & a bit of mud, on both Saturday & Sunday,, my 4 year old ROXY got 2 very nice UDX Passes this weekend at Albury, judges Yvonne Ross & Gordon Parsons Roxy also got the Highest Score In Trial from UDX, on Saturday My 11 year old VIOLET, got Highest Score In trial from Open with 196 on Sunday judge Judy Vander Vegt (ACT) Albury puts on a lovely trial, good grounds, good judges, very yummy homemade cakes & soup The trophies were very nice as well.
  7. You are one VERY busy lady with some very well trained/handled dogs! Congratulations again
  8. She's such a clever girl!! And I guess you helped a bit, xena98 WOW!!! You must be over the moon! Congratulations
  9. I ordered the 1 Hour & 40 Minutes, DVD by Michele Pouliot, " Step Up to Platform Training" & then I received one as a gift. Sooo, I have a new copy in original cover, (imported USA). It cost me $70.00 USA including postage IF anyone is interested, they can have it for $45.00, including postage, or pick up at KCC Park. Please PM me if interested. It is VERY well made & easy to follow!
  10. PS I "meant to say" Excellent & concise explanation SANTO 66 & Nekbet!! I also meant to add, that I have seen a few working line Golden Retrievers trained almost completely in "pack drive" "strong desire to cooperate" Many of that breed, seem to have inherited a very strong drive to work while eagerly submitting to the wishes of the perceived pack, This, in order to achieve instinctual survival goals I think a lot of confusion about TRAINING IN DRIVE comes from some people associating it mostly with PREY drive.
  11. Excellent & concise explanation I guess I would want to ask the original poster GOAL 1-what specific behaviours do you to achieve? 2-What is the present state of the dog in relation to the achievement of those behaviours 3-What drives (Prey, food, prey, pack drives are all expressions of drives) Which one(s) are strongest in your dog in various location i.e. back yard, house, field, trial, on a walk 4-What have you tried so far & which things were successful & in which environments EXAMPLE I incorporated on & increased my Standard Poodle's "play drive" & trained him to American Kennel Club Hunting Retriever titles, using play drive to teach retrieve in all sorts of situations. I then added withholding of reward, (getting to retrieve), to teach impulse control i.e sit & wait till sent, retrieve to hand do not chew, etc On very difficult retrieves, (long distance, heavy cover, blind retrieves ) I shot fliers/birds & used live shackled birds (legal in USA), to build prey drive to persist in finding the game. This dog exhibited very high food for Obedience work It was the ONLY way to motivate him to attain his USA & Australian UD titles However the same dog, was not interested in ANY kind of food in field work. He just LOVED to swim & retrieve, food was not high on his list of priorities in the field work
  12. WELL DONE!!! Fantastic results!! ROXY won UDX yesterday with SIGH, 165 NQ Picked up the right cloth dropped it to check the others & accidentally kicked it out of the way by mistake & did not pick it up again None of the other entrants got the right cloth either ROXY is getting almost perfect scores with most of the exercises. Just misses 1 exercise . I am so happy with the way she is working! That said, for most people, UDX passes are so VERY hard to get. This with a dog that got her UD & then OCH. in only 10 trials. Very demoralising! So true.....One day a rooster, next day a feather duster .
  13. I have recommended the SPORN Simple No Pull Training Halter (It is really a harness as it does not go on the head, but soft thick sheepskin lined straps go around chest/front legs & body) My clients have had great results using it for social walking their pups or adults It stops about 75% of pulling, without hurting the dog at all If you google it you will find stockists in Australia I have no vested interest in the company but love their products
  14. Thanks so much I will look them up If anyone else has info., please let me know
  15. Are there any breeders of medium to large, deep narrow chested dogs, who can tell me where to buy a bloat kit which includes stomach tube trocar needle, tape etc I recently had a very old, much beloved, dog of mine, bloat, for the 1st time, at night, on a holiday weekend, at a small town country show. With life threatening bloat, time is of the essence Luckily I was with her & recognized it at stage 1-2. Took almost an hour, but I was finally able to locate a Vet who was able to pass a stomach tube to empty the stomach of gas as she had not yet torsioned. The dog is alive, but the worst could have happened. I would like to have a kit, should I find myself in such a situation again.
  16. P.S. I totally agree with all of you that commented about finding something to praise the handlers for I find it VERY important to frequently catch every handler doing SOMETHING/ANYTHING "RIGHT" & mark handler behaviour with quiet &/or public praise People need positive reinforcement too & lots of it often. If they are not getting the down/drop right in class, praise the way they hold the food or praise their voice tone, or the great food rewards or toys they chose to bring to class I also agree with the helpful comments about training with distractions. OMG, it is so much more difficult with someone watching & other dogs & other people using food nearby! Perhaps, one could get permission, to give handouts at each class, with those great youtube clips with the Greyhound & the others (kikopup) some of you referred to You could ask people to watch them before they then practice, in a very quiet place at home, for 5 minutes a day
  17. Just a comment based on my own personal experience titling 7 Standard Poodles to U.D./Obedience CH. in 3 countries ..... I have never ever found any preference for one position over another, when training Standard Poodles My whole litters of baby puppies, are luring easily into sit, stand & drop,by 6 weeks of age ALL my own dogs have been trained with luring, shaping, & targeting. I have also assisted others in training deep narrow chested breeds & have no experiences of difficulty of dogs changing positions or preferring a particular position The only preferences shown, are when a particular position gets rewarded more than the others, consisitently i.e. most pet owners reward SIT more than other positions & most CONFORMATION show people reward STAND position more than other position
  18. I demonstrate to students how to teach the drop from a stand using the LURING METHOD Have a pocketful of very high value treats Sit on floor on side of a low table after positioning dog at narrow end Reach arm with food in hand under table & using food lure dog under table The dog has to voluntarily drop to follow the food AFTER he drops say DROP & immediately feed IN POSITION & release IF dog does not go all the way down the 1st time reward anyway Next time wait till dog goes all the way down One can also sit on the floor & use a slightly raised KNEE & lure dog under one's knee Say DROP AFTER he is in position & feed while he is IN POSITION
  19. UDX is a real challenge for us. Roxy & I have participated in 4 UDX trials so far....She is very eager & animated & fast but we missed passing due to 1 exercise, .... a different 1 each time I thought Agility needed intense concentration LOL! UDX, needs MORE very intense focus, of BOTH handler & dog for a much longer period of time Agility, by it's nature, is intrinsically re-in forcing to the dog In UDX the dog has to go for what seems like a very a long time without any primary, (food or toys),reinforcement. I am a very determined person & ROXY is a very determined dog so eventually........sooner or more likely LOL, later, (some day), we will get there
  20. I would be most grateful if you could send me a private E mail with links where I can BUY platforms Thanks!!!
