  9. Today a couple that own 2 dogs I bred, (competition horse people not dog people,) came over for lunch. They were friendly to the dogs patting them etc, After lunch, I asked them for a small favor & brought out the cloths I had just laundered I asked 1 person to LIGHTLY scent the Stewards articles & put them down & the other person to heavily scent THREE judges cloths I put them out in a BIG horse shoe shape so there was plenty of space between articles & no wind at all For the 1st time I FORCED myself to hold the scented cloth, in a LONG tongs & NOT push the article in Roxy's face It was SO difficult to control my urge to shove her nose into the towel, to insure she hAD the SCENT, but I restrained myself She barely smelled the scented cloths I did the cloths exercise 3 times always using a NEW scented judges cloth NOT the one she had brought back (cause it had her saliva on it) She EASILY & CONFIDENTLY, had a 100% success rate Then just to experiment ............ 1-I placed an UNSCENTED cloth among the Stewards cloths & did not lay a Judges cloth down 2- I gave her the scent of the JUDGES scented cloth which was NOT down Interestingly, she went to the UNSCENTED cloth 3 times showing lots of interest but did she NOT pick it up 3- I then THREW a judges scented cloth down when she was looking the other way Roxy immediately, caught the scent the Judges cloth sniffed & brought it back She was looking for DIFFERENCE That is why she was attracted to the only unscented cloth but did not commit SIGH I am a determined person & have been blessed with a wonderfully intelligent, enthusiastic dog, but to be honest I think Australian UDX Class leaves alot to be desired in terms of design QUESTION How do YOU think it is best to react when a dog brings back the wrong article My STRONG belief is that dogs ONLY do on purpose that which is rewarding so the wrong article is always confusion of some sort However, one MUST let the dog know that it is not what one is asking for
  10. I need advice on Cloths or some valium I started training my youngest dog in UDX Scent Discrimination a few weeks ago, just after she got her UD/O.CH. I began by using decoy articles she was unable to pick up except for the judges scented cloth, When she did that confidently for several days/sessions I switched to a couple of Steward scented cloths & 1 scented judges cloth I islowly, ncreased the # of decoy cloths, till I was using a full set I thought she had the understanding of the exercise as she had a 90% success rate over a 3 week period Then we began to have some unfortunate sessions 1-On 2 occasions, Steward very heavily scented decoy cloths, (NOT with my instructions) & she became confused but next session different Steward, lightly scented decoys, she was fine 2- We had two very windy days in a row, where the correct cloth blew on top of the decoy & she brought back the wrong cloth or/or became very confused Next couple of sessions she was confused Then we had a few good sessions Then a smoker acted as judge & she could not get the right cloth, acted hectic, picking up every wrong cloth & dropping them, going to correct one picking it up, dropping it 1/2 way back to me & going back for wrong cloth NOW, 2 months after we began, she seems to not have a clue. She is failing the exercise. She will often go to indicate the correct cloth, drop it sniff the others pick up others drop them & bring back the wrong cloth She NOW seems like she has no idea what to look for The past 2 days, I tried using UNSCENTED decoy cloths & she got the correct scented one 1st time 5 out of 6 times SO, yesterday, I tried having a Steward LIGHTLY scent decoy cloths & she went to the right cloth, indicated, picked it up dropped it mouthed all the others & brought back the wrong one HELP PLEASE DOES ANYONE HAVE ADVICE EXPERIENCES TO SHARE? This is my first UDX dog so it is like the blind leading the blind The dog is enthusiastic by nature with high retrieve & food & play drives but can get over the top with excitment Tries very hard to get things right, just seems confused now She is definitely not near Trial ready However, she is very enthusiastic & Is progressing VERY steadily & well with all the other UDX exercises I am not quite sure what happened. However, I would perhaps venture a guess that when different "stewards" heavily scented the stewards cloths on 2 - 3 occasions, she became confused & lost confidence That is just an educated guess
  11. I have trained several dogs to UD O.CH. but not yet UDX I started training my youngest dog in UDX Scent Discrimination a few weeks ago, just after she got her UD/O.CH. I thought she had the understanding of the exercise as she had a 90% success rate Suddenly, she seemed to not have a clue. She started failing the exercise. She will often go to indicate the correct cloth, drop it sniff the others pick up others drop them & bring back the wrong cloth She seems like she has no idea what to look for I am not quite sure what happened. However, I would perhaps venture a guess that when different "stewards" heavily scented the stewards cloths on 2 - 3 occasions, she became confused & lost confidence That is just an educated guess The past few days, I have tried ONLY scenting the judges cloths & she was correct 6 out of 7 times Today I added, lightly scented Stewards cloths again & she went back to confusion, picking up the right cloth & dropping it etc etc etc She is making wonderful progress on all the other exercises, so I find this all the more frustrating I would be most grateful for insight from experienced people
  12. A couple that owns a well behaved dog I bred, is taking their horses to a week long competition at Werribee Vic. I looked on General dog Discussion under Dog friendly accomodation, but found nothing in that area Any suggestions?
  13. HUGE entry In Rally Obedience at Friends of Obedience (FOO) Rally O. Trial last night at KCC Park in Victoria I was proud of my Poodle girls. Dual CH. (O.CH.) GiDay Violet Crumble RE ADX JDX ET Rally Excellent B. Class 100 Points 1st Place Judge Kim Houlden Rally Rally Advanced B. Class 100 Points 1st Place Judge David Hutson AND BEST IN TRIAL Dual CH. (o.CH.) Cosalta G'Day Roxy RE JDX AD ET Rally Advanced B. Class 99 Points 2nd Place Judge David Hutson Rally Excellent B. Class 97 Points Judge Kim Houlden They used a similar formula to the one used in Agility to calculate Best In Trial Take the perfect scores of 100, from all classes & consider the number of obstacles/stations performed by the total course time?? Math being my weak point I have no idea how exactly it was calculated, but I do know ethat Violet did 18 stations in 1.47 seconds with a score of 100
  14. I am in Cranbourne which is about 90KM North of them on South Gippsland Hwy I have a degree in Dog Behavior & training & alot of practical experience in Behvior modification & Training Please E mail me privately with details & I will give you my contact details so they can get in touch
  15. I am not sure if any of you are in the Brisbane area & able to assist with a referral for training. A lady in Brisbane has one of my Standard Poodles. She would like to find a small group, or private trainer, or positive rewards based club, in the Brisbane area, that could help her get started in Rally Obedience. An issue has arisen Her dogs are vaccinated with the core vaccines recommended by the Australian Veterinary Assoc./AVA protocol (vaccinate only with the 3 core vaccines & only once every 3 years) See Australian Veterinary Assoc. www.ava.org.au under protocol for the vaccination of dogs & cats Her dogs have blood titres for proof of immunity She has been refused entry into a club due to the fact that she will not give her dogs a Kennel Cough vaccine, even though that vaccine is not recommended by AVA Does anyone have a trainer or club (rewards based),that I can refer her to? Thanks!!
  16. That is such a beautiful photo. 100% classic kindly Labrador expression UD is not at all easy. It is a real challenge. I can attest to that. However, I now that I have started training for UDX, ...........well it is best to say no more LOL Just let it be said that I now yearn for UD LOL
  17. I would like to congratulate Jodie & her persoanlity plus, Pug, "MIA" for gaining her Rally O NOVICE title with 3 PERFECT scores of 100 at Bairnsdale this weekend Jodie's 11 month old adorable Boxer puppy, "Oliver", also gained his Rally Novice title in 3 trials with scores in the 90's This weekend was the 1st time Jodie has been to a Rally O trial Well done!!!!
  18. I was so pleased with my Roxy & Violet over the 2 days in RALLY O., at Bairnsdale & Morwell The girls seemed very happy in their cool coats & never let down We got a total 16 Pass cards ALL over 90 points, in Excellent B. & Advanced B Three of our Passes were a perfect 100 points & 6 Passes were 99 points As usual, I cost the girls points, in a couple of the classes, by my making a few silly handling errors Once I walked through the centreline of the off set figure 8 4 X instead of 3X, . I NOW will count out loud as I go around TWICE in a row with 2 different dogs, I did a 90 degree pivot in place instead of the required 180 pivot, Once, being on auto pilot for Obedience Stands while heeling, I put the toes of my right foot forward while standing my dog, on the Sit Stand Walk Around dog station Opinions seem to differ depending on whom one asks, about how many points to deduct for the handling errors such as those that I made Just curious, are the handling errors 10 points off or 3 points off for handler errors of 10 points off for an Improperly Performed station? I got 10 points deducted each time & accepted the deductions graciously However, I am still not sure if handler errors should have been 3 point deductions or 10 point deductions??
  19. A group of performance people had success in getting permission to use titre tests in lieu of yearly vaccines &/or to use C #3 in lieu of C 5. C #5 is NOT reccommended by the Australian Vet Assoc. We did the following For those of you who are members of ANKC state branches : Contact the office of your state branch Ask who the appropriate perosn on MGMT Committee is Then a short phone call or E Mail or letter requesting the subject of titre testing in lieu of vaaccines be brought up at the next committee meeting You may wish to enclose a copy of the Australian Vet Association (AVA) Protocol For Dogs & Cats & a couple of recent articles on the dangers of over vacconating (google Dr Jean Dodds for artciles/links) Management committe WILL help if you assiat them by providing recent, relevant info. It also helps to write short articles for Sate Gazettes siting recent easy to read research Local councils who make the bi laws requiring boarding kennels site C 5 Certificates can also be approached by contacting your local rep. & asking them to put the issue on the agenda
  20. After almost 2 years of not breeding, we have a litter of Standard Poodles due Xmas day
  21. Anyone have Class Results & Dog & Bitch C.C. results for Standard Poodles? Thanks!!
  22. I agree. It IS extremely important to proof dogs to distractions of all kinds, in time, when each is ready & not a moment before. It is important to proceed with a step by step training plan, carefully,& knowledgably, at each dogs pace. I also assist other people to train their dogs. Those dogs range from beginners, to those being rehabilitated from dog attacks, to those almost trial ready to those already competing. For ANY dog obviously in training, to be crowded, interfered with, intentionally intimidated, or annoyed by another dog & handler team, without getting permission to do so, is not "proofing". It is an act of either thoughtlessness, lack of consideration & respect for other's rights, OR an intentional attempt to annoy &/or intimidate. When one has just spent over 1 hour setting up a Rally course, or a UD ring, it is not all that convenient to just walk away, when a dog/handler appears & acts in a rude or inconsiderate manner Yes, you are correct, I was at the Poodle Club with my own 2 dogs ROXY won Highest Score In Trial with 195 from Open & Violet won UD with 193
  23. Just an update. All went well in the breeding of our Canberra girl. She is booked to fly home with the assistance of Wayrod, to Canberra tomorrow. Pups expected Dec 23rd. Will let you know how many when they are born. Thanks again everyone!
  24. Wondering about proper training etiquette & how you would answer/ advise new people about handling the following, without alienating ANYONE I recently had an Obedience, friend, who has a new pup/young CCD dog in training, ask me without sarcasm or malice, if there is a current trend in competition circles, towards "Socialization by Stalking". I asked her to give me some examples of what she meant. She answered "the type of behaviour that if one acted this way to another, at Safeway, would cause security to be called" She gave me the following examples: 1-she had been quietly training her dog on lead, in a large not crowded open space, when without any greeting, & without permission being sought, for her dog to be used as a distraction, found another Obedience competition dog/handler, almost on top of her with their dog's, nose up her dog's bum, multiple times. 2- Dog being let off leash in on lead area, & allowed to run up to her dog, &/or run up to stick their nose into &/or jump on her dog's crate, while her dog was crated 3-Dogs being walked to & fro dozens of times, in a short space of time, less than 2 meters past her crated or in car confined dog 4- dogs on lead being allowed to go to the end of a 2 meter lead & explore the inside of her training bag All of these scenarios have happened while she was either at a sanctioned Dog Training Club, or on the grounds of an ANKC establishment, or having a one on one run through On the 2 occasions when she stopped training & politely questioned the dog/handler teams, involved why they were doing this, the answers given by the various people were 1- "MY dog needs to learn to work with more distractions" 2-"YOUR dog needs to be proofed to distractions" 3-MY dog is OK don't worry, if your dog snaps at him, he will not bite back" 4-"MY dog needs to be socialized" 5-MY dog is friendly Anyway I came across this article again Very valuable Dog Behaviour article by Suzanne Clothier CTRL + click to follow the link below to what is one of the best articles Dog Behaviour I have ever come across www.http://flyingdogpress.com/content/view/42/97 Would love to hear differing points of view from list members about the above
