  1. Congratulations! exciting news. Looking forward to photos
  2. New pics of Wilbur, his sisters and their wider doggy family. Wilbur; just looking dashing. Wilbur playing coy Outside with the whole doggy family Three generations of girls Tail chewing 9 sleeps to go
  3. Ohhh I envy you having your pup only ten minutes away!! Ours is over 4 hours away!! I envy people who got to see their lil pups as newborns!! I wonder if there's a thunder noise cd you can get to play so that the pup gets used to thunder? We had terrible thunder here last night I saw this last night when surfing this site. Have no idea of its worth/effectiveness etc http://www.thevetshed.com.au/buy/dr-cam-days-frightful-noises-cd/FRIGHTCD
  4. Some vets have hydro therapy pools that you can go to for swimming (as opposed to therapy). The water temp is controlled, it's indoors, the first swim is usually with a staff member who shows you the ropes of their facility. Dogs may be required to wear a buoyancy jacket on their first swim which is supplied by the centre.
  5. A plastic fishing reel with a hand winder attached to it. Attach 50 meters of thin sturdy nylon rope to the reel and knot a metal lead attacher/clasp to the other end. When you call come and have no reaction, you can wind the puppy back in while continuing to call come in an exciting manner; and then praise/treat when they get to you. hope that helps
  6. eventually, yes.The IDEAL is that your pup runs to you when you call him ...because YOU are the source of all things wonderful !!! picking a pup up and placing him somewhere , IMO, teaches him nothing good. to LEARN to do something .. HE has to do it , not you . HE needs to walk into his crate . if the only way he will do this is to eat his meal... then, fine.. he only gets fed in his crate...and NOWHERE else. you need to teach yourself how to get your puppy to come running when you call. if he doesn't like brush time ... then brushing gets done when you INVITE (not grab) him for 'cuddle time' gently ,and a little bit of brushing, then a cuddle , some more brushing, then a massage .... cuddles/pats/treats ,IMO should only be given for rewards ...NOT just because puppy is cute , and you want to ;) This actually works out really well for the pup, as there are SO many opportunities for him to do the right thing and EARN a cuddle/feed/treat/game ...... that's if he loves cuddles , etc. if he is not a cuddle seeker- then use another reward. Not every dog does like cuddles .... have a read of these links CLICK HERE CLICK HERE and unless it is an emergency ..NEVER chase after your pup. +1 training for self-regulation not owner control is the approach i also advocate.
  7. I'm not sure (because i only have your post to go by) but i'll hazzard a guess that he doesn't have a high value for being in the crate and has associated being picked up with going in the crate- something he may not hate, but does not love to do. It sounds like you might need to build a higher value for the crate. Susan Garrett's DVD 'Crate Games' is a great dvd (worth every cent) that helps you build a very high value for the crate. One way to help develop high crate value is to feed him in his crate. Remembering that you can't rely on one way to build value. Perhaps instead of picking him up to put him in the crate, you could lure him with treats into the crate. That way he doesn't associate being picked up with being put in the crate. There are some youtube videos that illustrate crate training but none of them that i've seen so far have illustrated building a very high value for the crate. My two cents worth of advice is to purchase Susan Garrett's 'Crate Games' dvd and move forward in building a very high crate value. Hope i've helped
  8. enjoy every moment of the puppy cuddles because they grow soooo fast. Not including childhood family dogs, Wilbur will be our 3rd puppy, but there have been 10 and then 14 years between each one arriving. I'm not looking forward to the broken sleeps, but am looking forward to all the other fun things about raising another puppy.
  9. 11 looooooong sleeps I can't remember the last time i had puppy cuddles!
  10. awww if i have anymore sweetness tonight i'm going to OD. can't wait to see more pix after pickup on Saturday.
  11. awww if i have anymore sweetness tonight i'm going to OD. can't wait to see more pix after pickup on Saturday.
  12. awww it looks like a cute battery operated toy dog i had when i was 4!
  13. Vale Jessie Jetty it's so hard to have to make 'that' decision and say goodbye to a cherished family member. We did it at the end of May and I'm still crying every few days. Be strong; your family made the right decision.
  14. Wadz, i'm with Mason2009 on this. There are always some risks no matter what you do with your puppy; we can't control everything. I would hazzard a guess that a puppy travelling via air would have more chance of picking up para influenza than parvovirus. To contract parvo, it is my understanding that the pup has to have come in contact with contaminated dirt or faeces because it's not an airborne virus. Conversely, para influenza is an airborne virus and highly contagious, hence the reason i chose to have Wilbur vaccinated to the 4 level (asked his breeder, who was happy to comply). The good news is that para influenza is not fatal. hope this helps settle your concerns Wadz
  15. We have 11 sleeps left and Ive got all that too:) I havent bought food, collars or leads as the breeder is sending 2 weeks food, 2 collars a lead a bowl and some toys:) Ive brought out the puppy training pack and booked puppy class Getting excited now. speaking of booking puppy classes, I took a visit to the vets today to talk about puppy classes and to take the thank-you card & collage pic of Casper. It's the first time i've been back since the day Casper was pts. I was doing fine til the nurse asked if it was the first time i'd been back since that day. Needless to say after that i was a blubbering mess even when talking about Wilbur  We're down to 11 sleeps too! I've noticed that the closer the day rolls to Wilbur coming home, the more emotional i get about losing Casper. I've been doing all the 'moving forward' things like ticking the 'deceased pet' box on the council registration form and online microchipping data base and i think it's the finality of those things that has me in bouts of tears. I'm so very looking forward to holding little Wilbur in my arms and cuddling his fluffy little body and having lots of licky kisses. What time on Friday (12th) do you pick your bundle of joy up? Wilbur's flight get's in at 3:30 pm and we pick him up at 4:00. I'll be waiting at the freight centre at about 3:05 pm
  16. Awww!! Far too cute! I'm jealous you're so close - still 19 days to go for me. Getting there. Are you all set up and ready? I think I'm almost there - just sitting and waiting now... I think we're ready. We're going the raw food diet route so won't be buying food until mid next week. I made a large bed doona cover (for lounging in the lounge with us in the evening) just after we knew he was coming to us (you can stuff it with pre-loved thrift blankets). have softy toys, tug toys, balls, kongs etc a hard travel crate to start with and we're buying a 42" wire crate on wheels after he's settled in. Collars, leads & bowls are sorted. Clicker & treats & training videos & books have been read and watched. what else have i forgotten??? there's bound to be something The doona cover is such a clever idea - I might borrow that once I have some spare time and the inclination to do a little sewing! I got the idea from all the hassle of washing and rewashing the 2 beds & bed covers for Casper. At the end he was incontinent and i was forever washing but the inner mattress part of the beds weren't drying fast enough. When i ran out of beds I was laying old blankets in a pile for him, but of course they were moving about. I figured i'd stay with the blanket layering idea because blankets are easy to wash and dry in the drier if necessary. I buy thrift blankets & doonas and stuff the doona cover i made. The zip is on the wider side so that it's easier to slide folded blankets in. I made a pattern so that cutting was easier and i could quickly make more if i want. This one is huge; for a full size large dog. I'm considering making a smaller one for him while he's a puppy.
  17. oh Deek, my heart breaks for your family's loss. Vale Denzil!
  18. okay! now you're just teasing us c'mon now, i'm sure you're holding out on us! where are the pics you took yesterday? :p
  19. I grew up with German Shepherd Xs and a poodle that came from next door's pedigree mating, but poor old Dudley looked like a labrador crossed with a poodle. The neighbours were shocked when their bitch whelped Dudley and decided he was a genetic throw back I was about 9 and went next door to see the puppies and managed to convince my parents that we NEEDED a dog. Within a year or two we had two more dogs! This time my much elder brother's GS bitch X got in the family way accidentally. We took 2 of the pups as we were leaving Sydney for a bush property in northern NSW. When I married, my OH and i decided to get a GSD advertised in the local paper. The sire and dam were there when we went to see the litter, but looking back, they were definitely backyard breeders. I didn't have the understanding regarding BYBs that i do now and we bought Keiran. He was a wonderfully loved and cherished family member til he was 10 when he passed suddenly. Early on when we had Keiran our next door neighbours had a gorgeous black lab called Penny. She was a darling dog. Two weeks after Keiran died i told OH that i couldn't live without a dog. I was home raising our two daughters and had the time to raise another puppy. So we looked for lab breeders as we'd never forgotten Penny. Our shinning light Casper was with us for 14 years and we said said a heart wrenching goodbye to him at the end of May this year. Penny and Casper (a yellow lab) sealed the deal about breeds for us. In 12 days time, we pick up Wilbur; a chocolate lab

  21. New pics of Wilbur and the girls. Escape from Alcatraz or 'Naughty Pants' Is this the puppy equivalent of gossiping at the water cooler? Indoor dining Out door dining Playing with the big dogs 12 days till pick up
  22. had Wilbur not been travelling with exposure to unknown variables i'd be sticking to the c3 like you have chosen to do. Having lost a puppy to vaccinated puppy to parvo 24 years ago, i'm probably a little over cautious. Even though i know para influenza isn't fatal i don't want a small puppy to get it.
  23. The intervals between vaccinations usually depends on when the schedule was started i.e. 6 weeks or 8 weeks etc. You may need to provide more specific information for a more detailed answer about your confusion. What exactly is it that you are confused about?
