Did some homework. Wellness Simple and Holistic Select Grain free would be some options to explore. -
Breeding Blue Staffordshire Bull Terriers
Salukifan replied to Meg_1985's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'd not be doubling up on dilutes in this breed but you really need the advice of experienced SBT people. You don't need to buy a sire - use a great dog someone else owns! -
Not a dog I'd recommend to a novice dog owner. Tell me why so HW so i can add it to my own breed research, This breed review pretty much sums it up. I'd not ever suggest I'm well versed in the breed but of the few dogs I do know, most are dog aggressive. Seriously dog aggressive and a handful for their owners who ARE novices. Therefore not what I call novice dog owner material. I know of one other who is far less fiery but it is in very experienced hands.

Pig Rails In Whelping Boxes, Help Or Hazard?
Salukifan replied to Kirislin's topic in Breeders Community
If it is really freaking you out, go to Target or Big W etc and buy a plastic clam shell pool. I know plenty of people who use them as whelping boxes. -
Good Dry Food For Very Allergic Dog?
Salukifan replied to Fevah's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Given that Panic apparently is allergic/sensitive to beef and chicken (and by default perhaps other poultry?) what would you substitute for the protein/meat aspect in a raw food diet? In Alaska? Salmon or some sort of venison. -
Good Dry Food For Very Allergic Dog?
Salukifan replied to Fevah's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Given that your friend is in Alaska, its hard to suggest a food - but probably one of the US brands will be the best bet. For a dog with this many allergies, she's probably going to have to feed a unique protein and filler. I'd be very tempted to suggest she try a raw diet. This link gives a good run down of some of the better US brands and identifies where a brand does a food suitable for a dog with food allergies. There are also vet only sold foods specifically for this issue. -

Socialising Scared My Dog And He Cannot Be Shown Now

You have said this several times. Why do you doubt it? -
Socialising Scared My Dog And He Cannot Be Shown Now
Salukifan replied to cyrus2015's topic in Puppy Chat
My dog has bad scars, spots and bite holes through his ear. The hair will not grow back so he will be marked for life This will not prevent him from being shown. If this happened two weeks ago, I'd not be so sure you won't get regrowth either :) -
Socialising Scared My Dog And He Cannot Be Shown Now
Salukifan replied to cyrus2015's topic in Puppy Chat
I honestly doubt one incident will scar your pup for life. I'd be talking to a trainer. Don't blame a breed for the actions of one dog. You'd be better off spending some time coming up with a strategy to help your pup to have some positive experiences with dogs. The only thing stopping your dog from being shown is you. -
Why Are Greyhounds Always Suggested As "no Fuss" Dogs?
Salukifan replied to Salukifan's topic in General Dog Discussion
It's certainly a lot more common in some breeds than others. Unsurprisingly, in dogs bred to course or chase game, it is common and expressed differently dependant on the breed's purpose. Sighthounds typical of their breeds tend to be triggered to chase movement - even plastic bags on lines! In herding and gun dog breeds it has been modified to suit particular purposes. In each of those breeds the chances of seeing the particular form of prey drive bred for over generations is greatly increased. That was the whole purpose of purebred dogs - to increase the chances of getting desired behaviour. Greyhounds have been bred for a very long time to race. Only successful dogs are usually bred, again increasing the chances that dogs will have high prey drive. They are also not socialised to other domestic pets. Some will be OK, a lot won't be. -
Train the family not the dog. Stealing is a natural canine behaviour. They need to learn that if the dog can get it the dog will take it. Swap what she steals for a tasty treat and that should help. And make some areas of the house out of bounds to the dog.

It's the usual drug story - an aid in the hands of knowledgeable people and a disaster in the hands of the ignorant. But the drug shouldn't be demonised because it is abused.

Why Are Greyhounds Always Suggested As "no Fuss" Dogs?
Salukifan replied to Salukifan's topic in General Dog Discussion
which many, many breeds have and is managed by very many owners very well. But it has to be acknowledged to be managed and the amount of unhelpful posts (not here) by people convinced that Greyhounds are abused in order to make them chase and the pics posted of dogs with kittens and bunnies are not helpful to novice owners of ANY sighthound breed. -
Over the many years I've been here, I've noticed a tendency for people to suggest retired racing greyhounds for people looking for a "no fuss" dog. I get that people are keen to see as many as possible rehomed and I fully support that. However Greyhounds are large dogs and they have needs like any other dog. Those needs include company, decent exercise and enough room to move in a yard or a lot of walking. I think it does a wonderful breed a considerable disservice to recommend them as an "easy no fuss dog" if it means that the dog is meant to cope well with little attention or exercise. If I'd not recommend a Whippet for a family, I certainly wouldn't recommend a larger, faster dog, especially one that's generally had the company of other dogs in its early life. Greyhounds are dogs, not statues. Please don't recommend them into less than great homes.

Yes, I was surprised about that. There are several events for pet dogs and a high jump competition, both of which always draw big entries and are popular with the general public. It does seem however, that the gap in interest between purebred dogs and novelty events for pets is forever widening Maybe the public just find traditional showing boring. Purebred dogs can do novelty events, or very physical sporting events which will show off their athletic abilities and are much better spectator sports for the person on the street. I don't see why it would be any more boring than poultry, cattle or rabbit showing? *shrugs* My understanding was that the decision had nothing to do with the public and everything to do with Show Committee politics. Most notably the politics of giving the horse exhibitors more room. How quickly some show committees forget how they made dogs centre stage during the equine influenza outbreak and how dog exhibitors kept them afloat. The impact on income will be significant. Time to wait and see what happens next. It would have been nice for people to see and meet Dachsie breeders if they were interested in the dogs as opposed to walking the mine field of finding a dog on Gumtree.

Get a burglar alarm. That will open out your choices a bit more. Human aggression in a Stafford or a Pitbull (get an Amstaff as they are legal) is a VERY SERIOUS fault. My honest advice is not to get a pup. Get a mature adult that won't have the time demands a pup would

I'm glad they have something dog related there. They dropped their dog section from the show.

Petition - Stop The Dog-Eating Festival In China...
Salukifan replied to westiemum's topic in General Dog Discussion
I urge people to inform themselves on subjects before signing and sharing emotive petitions. The China Kennel Club is the organisation that bid for the World Dog Show. They are at the forefront of changing attitudes to dogs in China and lead the way in dog rescue in that country. Initially they WERE dog rescue. Now a bunch of folk, most of whom know nothing about the CKC, consider that a minority culture practice in that country should be sufficient to shut the CKC's efforts down. What a smack in the face to a dedicated group of people who want to see dogs treated as pets, not food. They are not the Chinese Government. They have no power to shut down the festival. Do we see similar pushes to deny Spain a World Dog Show even though every year tens of thousands of Galgos are tortured and killed in that country? Nope, there isn't even a murmur. Smacks of racisim to me. And how do we, as Australians, have any right to the moral high ground given our track record on things like live baiting of Greyhounds. Think with your heads everyone and consign these sorts of petitions to the scrap heap where they belong.
