  1. Because if your dog gets off your property the man from the pound will get it and then you will have to pay to get it back again so why not have it on a chain??? Because chained dogs are MASSIVELY over represented in dog attack statistics and when kids are around this is a license for tragedy. Also because such dogs are often poorly socialised and frankly, a bit nuts. Get some decent fencing or don't get a dog. Problem solved. Chaining of dogs is banned in whole states in the USA and I know in NZ there are campaigns to get dogs off chains for good.
  2. So very sorry to read this Gillybob. RIP Anna.
  3. I don't read it that way at all. The dog may be owned by someone overseas but someone still signs the export paperwork.
  4. Toss in recycling bin and move on. Don't over think it.
  5. I have two questions about this course: 1. Do you really want to go to a training course with "Alpha" in the title given that the whole idea of humans being "the alpha" as a training method is largely discredited 2. What kind of training do you think you'll get in just two weeks that will set you up to train other people's dogs. My advice? Join the Albury dog training club and do a well respected online training course like NTDF. You'll be both qualified AND better experienced to train others.
  6. I certainly don't believe that a dog making your older dog's life a misery and causing behavioural issues is a good match, or much fun for you. Was going to suggest this when I first saw the thread. If you want to try again get a younger (even a baby) working breed male. They'll understand each other so much better.
  7. The PETA one is a crack up. Emotional rant. Desex everything. No more breeding. Yep and no more dogs at all is the result. At least other animal rights groups took the care to use facts in their submissions.
  8. I see a glimmer of hope in the NSW Government realisation that more regulation without enforcement is not the answer.

    New Puppy

Pup is a Border Collie/Siberian Husky cross. A combination I can only describe as "diabolical" in less committed or experienced hands. We had a litter of GSD/Husky crosses in our region a few years back. Over the months that followed quite a few were rehomed or ended up at DAS. Right up there with the WTF combination of Maremma and Golden Retriever pups that some brightspark produced. I think most of those ended up with professional behavioural trainers.

Half of my backyard is undercover if that helps? Or will it still be better to get a kennel? Yes. I see you are in NSW - what area? How hot/cold does it get. Undercover may still get wet in heavy rain

If you plan to keep her outside during the day, I suggest an insulated kennel. Crates offer no protection from the elements.

    New Puppy

Oops missed the last couple of questions. A baby puppy is too young to take for walks. They need free play with you and with suitable dogs and you are unlikely to find those at the dog park. Join a dog training club ASAP. I think you'll both benefit from that AND you may find suitable play friends for her.

Wow, I struggle to think of a potentially more challenging cross of breeds than this one. There are few points I'd like to make before getting into answering questions. Your pup should have been weaned. The health status of its mother really shouldn't be an issue. That makes me rather suspicious you're being told a story to explain why your pup will now miss out on very important lessons from its littermates. I smell a breeder offloading pups early. If this pup has not been vaccinated and microchipped, you should not buy it. It's an illegal sale. You are proposing to put a cross of dogs bred to work and run all day into a small back yard. Sign up for obedience training and dog sports ASAP and commit to doing them for years or prepare for a moonscape back yard. A six week old pup requires a minimum of three meals a day. If you can't get home to feed it, I strongly recommmend you find someone who can drop in and do a lunchtime feed. You can go to 2 meals a day at 12 weeks. Initially what the breeder is feeding. YOu should be told what that is. I recommend a combination of premium kibble and raw meaty bones like chicken necks No. It's not necessary to feed pups milk once they are weaned. Puppy milk is basically lactose free milk at 4 times the price of the human equivalent. I do feed my pups goats milk and they love it. Yes but you'll have to get up and take her outside during the night if she needs to toilet. Unless you want your bedroom a disaster area with pee and poo, outside. Not recommended. If you want your dog to toilet outside, that needs to be happening from day 1. I cannot stress enough that this is a potentially very challenging combination of breeds. Not for the faint hearted IMO. This will be a big commitment. Hope you are up for it.
  14. I had one more idea. You could have an area that features Aussie made products - Blackdog, the Aussie foods, Animal House shampoos etc. A lot of people do like to buy Australian so that might be a bit of a winner. Good for promotions too.

    Puppy Gear

120 grit sanding belts The egg cartons are chewed. My house is a sea of chewed cardboard at the moment.

Decent shampoo and conditioner Nail clipper (I'd recommend a Dremel myself) Soft toys and egg cartons (my pup's favourites at the moment) Transport crate?
  17. I loathe the big chain pet stores. Their stock tends to be limited ranges of cheap collars and leads, over priced treats and toys and, in my experience, limited staff knowledge. Any worming products will be expensive, limited in range and poorly advised on for the post part. Walk into any of these shops and try to buy a limited slip or martingale collar that isn't a Rogz chain one and my bet is you'll fail. Ditto for a decent crate, a stainless steel feeding bowl or a quality brush. This will put me out of step with many dog owners but am not in the slightest bit interested in taking my dog to the pet shop for an enrichment experience. If dogs are allowed, its a high risk area for transmission of disease and inevitably (God knows why this is) there will be dogs marking the stock. I think it is particularly risky to provide communal water bowls as the chain stores do. I appreciate that some things (especially coats and harnesses) need to be fitted to dogs so a fitting area would be a good idea but I don't want to be fending off dogs out for a visit when I shop. What gets me going back is quality products (things like Durapet bowls and Blackdog collars which the big chains don't stock), and a good range of grooming products. The niche for any non chain pet store for me is staff with knowledge and a range of quality products in areas like grooming, collars and leads and coats and accessories. Top quality dog food too. Those are things I buy regularly. Thank God we have one or two of those shops in the region. People travel a long way to get there and the serious dog nuts like me spend up. I think a shop like that would offer a real alternative to online shopping. I do prefer to see before I buy. The only thing I can suggest to add is an education/seminar area so that you can advertise little seminars (like Bunnings do) to help dog owners care for their dogs. Even learning how to properly brush a dog, trim nails and give tablets is useful. I'm sure the dog sports folk would line up to give quick talks and show videos on Saturdays. So an area that provides education would be my pick. Rescues could set up there too.
  18. Have you investigated the RSPCA paying vet costs? They sold you a pup with a health condition
  19. It is unfair to try to shift blame the onto owner of a dog who has been bitten for the behaviour of the biting dog. Making excuses for a dog that bites a pup is also hardly helpful. I will sure as hell pull my dog back or pick it up if the behaviour of the other dog is aggressive. It's hardly worsening a situation if it leaves your dog intact. I agree that socialisation is important for dogs. Controlled socialisation with dogs with appropriate behaviour and owners that know what their dogs will do. I'd rather not socialise my dog than give it bad experiences.
  20. If you're worried enough to post here... vet time!
  21. If the pup is allowed inside, I'd recommend a dog door. Pup will be inside. Have a dog door for my other 2 so hopefully he will learn to use that no worries My pup nailed the dog door on his second day here. :)
  22. If meeting a four figure vet bill means the difference between life and death for your pet (as it does for some folk on restricted incomes) pet insurance is no gimmick.
  23. If the pup is allowed inside, I'd recommend a dog door.
