Top bloodlines for WHAT? Field work, obedience, agility, tracking, showing?????

To the OP, all I can say is you've learned a very expensive lesson. A nine month old dog could have been Pennhip scored before you shelled what seems to be an staggering amount for an untested, unproven adolescent dog but even if his hips were perfect, you don't know for certain that he's fertile. Why buy a stud dog anyway - after one generation, he's of no use to you for at least another generation. Next time choose a proven sire and send your girls to him or do AI. As for colour breeding - yes it IS the people that make the colour the problem - but in doing so, they do create problems for a breed. And not just the breed under discussion here - its happened in quite a few over the years.

Don't ask me. I have a dozen different ones

Lushos, where is the calcium source in your dog's diet. I can't identify one. Eta. Spotted the chicken wings but I'd be giving a calcium source every day.

If the breeder of this dog is listed on DOL, I would be letting Troy know.

I think a lot of dogs haven't read the manual. I find it difficult to believe that a dog would sit around for an hour after chasing down prey before eating. Forr some deep chested breeds this might not be a bad idea but as far as I know, no study has linked exercise to bloat.

I'm sure your state Dept of Fair Trading and the local small claims court could assist you to recover some of the costs of your purchase.

Gait may be one. A dog that doesn't display much rear drive or that does a lot of "bunny hopping" would concern me. Bear in mind though that there are a myriad of causes of gait issues and that some dysplastic dogs don't display any symptoms. If you are concerned, see a knowledgeable vet. I can recommend one locally but X-rays would probably be their first step.

A bit of chalking might help to minimize the appearance of the shaved area.

I don't think you can accelerate it sadly.

I'll say!

Would you rate it for Whippets Oakway? I have never had a bit of trouble with it and the Whippets loved it. Infact I would still use it if I could purchase it where I live. The store closed down. Thanks Oakway. I'll try it. :)

Hey DOLers. I notice that Pookinuk is now carrying Innova dog food. This stuff has always had a pretty good rap but because it was only carried by the dreaded Pets Purgatory stores, I'd never have bought it. Now that it's, no longer the case, has anyone tried it?

Thankyou very much, yes I do realise raw is best for dogs, its what they have eaten in the wild before we domesticated them etc, but I posted this for peoples opinions and advice. I know some dogs these days need special vitamins and I was adding some fish oil in my dogs meat when I was serving but I was hoping you could just buy a dry food with the extras in it. I give them marrow bones once a week to clean their teeth, chicken necks sometimes gives Cindy the runs and domino sometimes swallows his necks whole. I was hoping for some good reviews on advance, purina or eukaburna (something like that) Leaving MumtoShelley's latest feeding fad aside, I would suggest you try a kibble for sensitive skin/allergy dogs. Here's a selection of ones you might consider Royal Canin or ProPlan would be my suggestions.

I agree with you there sheridan, Missy was on raw for 2 and half weeks before putting her on earthborn holistic grain free, When she was feed raw she seemed happier, her scratching basicly stop, her horrible farts where no longer there, her poos were smaller and they didn't smell. SO i believe Missy my whippet will do better on raw then on kibble. With Rascal my white/brown chihuahua his coat colour seems brighter, his poos are smaller and not smelly altho he still eats his poos. Shelley my golden retriever seems better on kibble even if feed 1.5% of raw to what she should weigh she still managed to gain weight, Where with kibble she seems to maintain her weight better. is anyone else as confused as me ?????? I think I need a drink. Welcome to my world

So much for sticking to the kibble for six weeks. Honestly, this dog has had so many changes of diet and so many different foods, you'd have no idea what was causing the problem. What happened to the dog roll you were feeding? Are you still feeding that awful packet pet mince?

How does someone not have enough space and time after 3 weeks Poor whippets... Pet shop purchase, reality has set in. Happens all too frequently. Probably in an apartment and chewed something.

Thanks, he did have a course of cartrophen earlier in the year, but he has recently recovered from discospondylitis and is still on daily dexamethasone for a collapsed disc. He still sometimes shows signs of pain in the evenings though which is when the vet suggested using a heat pack. A warmer coat would be easy. Would body heat alone be enough to help ease the pain? In my experience, yes. A warm dog won't feel it as badly. Is an infra red lamp a possibility - he can move away from it if it gets too hot. I would also consider a heated bed.
-
I would suggest extreme caution with heat packs - they can do more harm than good. How about a nice ordinary warm coat - body heat alone may do the trick. If he isn't on Cartophen, I'd suggest you talk to your vet about that too.

I have to say that I am quite taken with Affenpinschers :) Or a Pug!!

I have heard Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers (NSDTRs) referred to more than once as "the Border Collie of the Gundog Group" They might be worth a look.
