  1. Applecross vet is Steve Metcalfe most breeders use him and he is quite good.Desexemall thats a long way to drive.I have been to george a few times over the years and I always thought he was a bit dodgy but I dont know him that well and a lot of people swear by him.I m just picky I guess.Didnt know Ross staaden had retired I spoke to him awhile ago as he is one of the few vets that does AI from frozen semen here and he told me he was moving as his premises had been sold.
  2. No and I dont think you did degrade my breed I just wanted to set the record straight.I did seekout a trainer unfortunately due to health problems he isnt able to train anymore so here in the west my options are limited. There are a few people around doing similar training but I wouldnt touch them with a barge pole as I dont want to end up with a problem dog so I would rather not train.I am not so bent out of shape for not beoing able to train as I am with societys views about anything that is not to the liking of the majority.I have gotten used to being a social pariah becuase of the breeds of dogs I choose to own.Its water off a ducks back.I also dont have to justify my comments as there are plenty of responsible bull breed owners out there like myself.Dont worry you didnt offend me I dont get offended easily and I hope you got your dogs back safely.
  3. Exactly. I think most people are aware there are many clubs out their doing obedience and tracking but this is not schutzund is it and that is what we are talking about. Why do you thank god its only limited to certain breeds?Seems to me your inference is that miscreants only own a certain breed and its that type of attitude that we are referring too. There are irresponsible owners in every breed of dog. There are plenty of people that turn up at schutrzund clubs wwho want their dog attacked trained Im sure and these are the people who should be turned away.It doesnt matter what breed of dog they own.Im sure some of them have slipped under the radar as well becuase they own the right breed. I would have thought that was obvious.Your point is? What were German shepherds origianlly bred for? They werent just bred for the sport of schutzund now where they. Its all fun and games until someone loses an eye isnt it Jeff.Without appropriate supervision accidents will happen. A lot of dogs were breed for differing reasons hundreds of years ago, so what?Thats not what the majority of them are bred for now.Why is it you think that bull breeds dont have the mental strength to cope. That is laughable. It is quite of obvious from your ignorance that you know nothing about bull breeds. There are American bulldogs being used by Police Departments in the US as police dogs.Boston is one of them.Dont take my word for it have a look on the net.Do you think they would be using them if they werent stable enough? They use them because they are versatile and trainable and can do everything any other breed of dog can.Do you know 90% of the people that complain do you or what dogs they own? My dog does show natural tracking ability and with one of them I was doing schutzund, not at a club but with a guy that used to be in the club and who is a responsible and capable trainer. The dogs did not get a bite for months. He assessed the dogs on their merits.I have obedience trained every dog I own.I am a member of an obedience and agility club.Where did people go on and on about bite stuff.Maybe you need to re read the posts.Nowhere did I mention it in my posts and phatdex maybe a reference to his dog.One statement. Yes they do or why would they do it.If its to boost their ego's like some show people who have no lives then maybe they should find another sport because they are there for the wrong reason. Thats fair enough Jeff but when I was a kid I was taught to question things not just accept them becuase I am not a sheeep. There are plenty of shepherds that arent suitable for it either. If a breed of dog has been used in the sport for many years obviously there will be lines that are suitable,if dogs are excluded they can never reach that point. There are plenty of American Staffordshire Terriers doing Schutzund and I can mention the bloodlines that do exceptionally well at it and have done for a long time. Very good post Chell and I agrre with you wholeheartedly that to the untrained eye dogs can appear to be dong well or have what it takes when in reality they are nervy, they are grabbing the end of the sleeve with a half nouth bite at best and trying to back away not pull the sleeve. This is what makes a good handler being able to read the situation and give the dog confidence.I have seen some ordinary handlers doing a good job of ruining a dog.I also advise against people trying to do the training by themsleves with limited knowledge. I understand the commitment and the passion people have for the sport that do it and the rules are the rules thats fine.I hope the sport goes far in this country and one day the doors open up.I also agree with the parallels you draw to bsl because there is a lot of misinformation out there about Schutzhund.I understand that the club has to protect itslef and its members.Lastly I would just like to say as much as I like the sport I would not change breed just to particpate.I love the breeds that I own and wouldnt swap them for the world and if you were in the same situation I wouldnt expect you too so please understand that.
  4. Put a spoonful of apple cider vinegar in the water,it keeps the algae down and its good for the dog.
  5. Firstly I wouldnt tell anyone with limited knowledge to go and try and train their dog themsleves.I wouldnt try and do it wit h my own dog. Why are you concerned?I have had plenty of dogs that display guarding ability at this age and that is what I expect.I am talking about bulll breeds because that is what my experience is with, but dogs with good nerves and temperaments will start to show it at this age, usually when their puppy teeth start to fall out and sometimes before and I have had plenty that have and they turned into great guard dogs even before fully grown. That is nothing exceptional, you know you have a good dog when they are showing it at this age.I dont have the experience with shepherd breeds so I cant comment on them or the dog in question.I understand that you may think this person is mistaking something for what it isnt and it may be fear but some of us do know what we are looking at.
  6. Your right Jeff there is snobbery in all dog sports and not just dog sports.Jeff Im not sure but you can find the info on this dog on the web.I am not up with requirements for other countries but I think what you posted are minimum requirements meaning the dog may have been 16 months old when he started and went straight through. I would say that is the case Jeff as the dog is in America. What rules they go by I do not know.
  7. The dog is in the US but I think he gained the SCHIII in Germany but dont quote me on that.He obtained all the titles in the space of 4 months, from 0 to SCHIII.The gfermans tried to have bull breeds banned from Schutzund after this but their was such an uproar from owners in that country including boxer owners because this meant they would be excluded as well. That is par for the course but their is still alot of snobbery that goes on and you cant deny that. Some people think that because the Germans invented it for Shepherds that only German dogs should be alowed to do it and that is crap. The most titled dog in the world is an American Pit Bull Terrier.I am not here to sing the praises of the pitbull although I may be biased, there are plenty of breeds that would make good Schutzund dogs that are excluded and people saying that they only use those dogs because they are proven to be more stable is a load of crap.
  8. Many years ago I went down to the schutzund club here in the west as I wanted to train my dog.I did a bit of work and they liked my dog and I asked if I could join. They said they would have to ask the governing body in the Eastern States and get back to me.The answer was no.The dog in question was an American Pit Bull Terrier. They told me I could come along and train but could never compete so I didnt bother. My dog had plenty of ability but once again discrimination got in the way. I gather this list is only for Austra;lia because there are plenty of other dogs shcutzund titled elsewhere in the world that do not appear there. This reads because we have our heads up our asses and wouldnt know a good dog if it jumped up and bit us. The Germans tried to have other dogs banned from the sport several years ago and make it only for German dogs after an American Bulldog went all the way to SCHIII in 4 months which is a record.Obviously they had their noses put out of joint. The dog was Banuelos Predator owned and trained by AL Banuelos. You can find it on the net if you search for it.Any dog can make a a schutzund dog or shgould I rephrase that.Just about any breed can make a schutzund dog it just depends on the individual dog. If they want the sport to grow and flourish they should open their eyes. Not everyone wants to own a shepherd breed.
  9. I feed them to mine whole and usually give 5 each to my bigger dogs and 3 to the small one and I cut them in half for her. Thats the same as I pay Tony cheap as chips but Im not saying where I get mine from.Call me selfish but over the years have told many people where I got pet food from and sooner or later it gets dearer or in shorter supply because the more people you tell the more go there.
  10. Ashley I have fed my dogs on fish for a long time never had problems.I give it about once a week.Usually I feed human grade salmon or sardines.Just watch out the first time you feed it tip the oil out or it will go straight through him.I also feed them fish whenever I catch some.i make sure I fillet it never ever give them it with bones in when its raw as they can and will get stuck in their neck. Hows about another pick of that dog of yours.
  11. I think the lean in arms are the shot. You can buy it here or make your own out of light gauge galvanised stell angle and bend it and bolt it to the fence.A guy down the road from me has asbestos fence 6 foot high around 25 acres and those lean in arms atop the fence all the way round with 3 rows of barb on it.I dont know what he has in there I figure he is growing drugs but thats his business, but his dogs dont get out.
  12. I try to wash mine about every 6 weeks at least unless they need it sooner, but only because I live on rural land and they always find something to roll in or get dirty. Before that when I was in suburbia I would sometimes go 3 months without washing them, just depends if they need it or not.I too use good old martha gardeners as well as a couple of other ingredients.
  13. I give it to my pooches everyday in their food and their water.
  14. If you do not have the injectable stuff you can rub vitamin c powder in to the wound and it will be absorbed into the bloodstream. Also force vitamin c tablets down there throat its not as useful but it might buy you some time.
  15. Cordelia I don;t know about N.S.W but in the changes to the dog act here in W.A they tried to write it in,but as the document still has not come out I do not know. Also the president of the schutzund club here was asked to leave it by the german shepherd club here that he is also a member of because of conflict of interest( why I dont know).Maybe they got wind of the changes and wanted to distance themselves. So I dont know if the schutzund club here is even still going.
  16. It is used in America by veterinarians, here most vets I have spoken too still think its a myth.I used it on my pitbull when she got bitten.I saw her get bitten. I injected her within 5 minutes and she showed no signs for some time, after an hour she started to show signs and I was already on my way to the vet.I arrived and she was still conscious. She was given antivenine and still died but I believe that was the vets fault as he injected her with something else after she was already coming good, but that is another story not for here. By the time I got to the vet it had been an hour and a half since she was bitten. She was bitten on the lip which is the worst place to get bitten for a dog so the vet tells me,by a 6 foot dugite(brownsnake). She was still conscious when I arrived at the vets and I dont believe she would have been without the vitamin c as she copped qa good dose of venom because there was blood coming out of the deep fang marks in her lip (she did kill the snake).I lost my best mate that day and I often think if I had of given her more or if I had of gotten there quicker, guess I'll never know. You are supposed to give 10_ 15ml of 500mg/ml intramuscularly into each side of the neck.I didnt give my dog enough as at the time I couldnt remember how much and I didnt have my computer here. But I would try it again, but I would also be ready to go to the vet. As pebbles said there is some information by pat colby on the net that you may find useful.
  17. Holly, I think you are right, far too much vegies and not enough meat for a growing dog.I feed my dog who is probably a similar size to yours albeit a different breed, about 3/4 of a kilo of beef mince with with grated carrot and par bolied rice, garlic ,kelp and yeast and he seems fine.If he gets a little plump I cut it back for awhile.
  18. I am sorry to hear that Gemibabe and I hope some treatment will help.I like Rebanne had a dog diagnosed with it and 3 weeks later I put her to sleep.I first noticed alump on her elbow and took her to the vet and straight away she gave me the bad news and said prepare for the worst.Within 3 weeks the lump was as big as my fist and the painkillers didnt seem to be helping. As the dog was 12 years old I didnt feel that she could take the treatment and I had to make the hard decision. Its painful but I knew it was for the best.
  19. Just had my puppy vaccinated with it,she didnt seem to mind too much. Will tell you how it goes.
  20. I worm myself every 3 months the same as my dogs but with combantrim and its cheaper too.
