Do You Keep A Bloat Kit On Hand For Emergency S
Steph M replied to chook007's topic in General Dog Discussion
Slightly OT and will start another thread if need be... What would you suggest as essentials for a good doggy first aid kit? I'll admit we have nothing but lately I've been thinking we should have a basic one handy come Summer when we tend to be out and about lots more. Our human one is pretty poor too. So we should be given a stern smack in the back of the head -
Please please film this endeavor. I would die to see that! Sure as sht your house wouldn't be being burgled between the Mals and the attack horse! HAHAHA

Seriously? The whole point of having a dog is to spend time with it, what's the point if instead of spending time with it you just billet it out to someone else. I understand some people using day care for during their work hours, etc but what's the point of having a dog if you just send it away when you otherwise would have been spending time enjoying life together? Apart from that I'd much rather be in a one on one/two situation with my own dog where I can properly supervise than leave my dog with a stranger and hope they have enough sense to read their body language! Yes dear seriously. Lots of people put their dogs into day care occasionally so they can mix with other dogs in a controlled environment - providing it is a professional daycare. Hardly "billeting them out" and doesn't mean they don't want to spend time with them. You don't have to spend all your spare time with your dog surely. They're entirely different and serve entirely different purposes? A relaxed walk down the park in the sun VS a day in with 25 or so other dogs of various size, temperament and age in close quarters. If she's being targeted for showing signs of submission or nervousness or even aggression this is much much more likely to complicate and exacerbate these issues. Ergh! Aside from that $50 bucks plus a day is just too much for many people. Be practical. You can organise playdates with friends. We'd be in if you're in Vic. I'm sure some other people here would be happy to help you out. Might also be worth some solid obedience to build up some confidence? ETA I see you do that. Go you! :p

We've recently had a much worse experience at a well renowned daycare than I have ever ever had at a park. Never ever again.

Told She Was Desexed.. Find Out She Isn't. Accidental Mating
Steph M replied to Wilfred's topic in General Dog Discussion
Bit rude. I wouldn't have thought to question her desex status if I'd been told otherwise. -

Gus hates it too. I get so mad because we've done it since 8 weeks, lots of treats and praise and happy times and he loses it. Rosie however, never had hers done until we got her, they just wore down well enough and will happily let us clip them whenever. -

Are they Etsy finds? I've looked at the same store! Christmas present methinks... -
How does one tactfully offer such advice to a grieving owner? It's good common sense, but not easy to impart under those circumstances... T. I think leaving out the graphic idea of leakage would be a good start. I totally agree, very sage advice and very practical but hard to swallow in the circumstances.

What Is Your Favourite Animal To Own
Steph M replied to Rascalmyshadow's topic in General Dog Discussion
We might end up as neighbours. Crazy farm animal ladies.... I can see it now. And I'll make my own cheese and bread... Oh the dreams I have. -
Ha yes they are very clumsy at this age! Polly is all legs and not co-ordination most times! they do get out of it eventually though! No I kept her from my last litter... I have been wanting to get into the obdeidence and agility for a while but time is my enemy sometimes so decided that I need to make the time and thought if I found a buddy it would be easier to commit and more fun than on my own :) Ooooh I think I know you from thw FCR facebook group! She's a total spunk!
-
Aw I wish I weren't in Vic! I have a 6 m.o FCR too (Not a skyehaven baby?) I'm a newbie too so no use there either. I have to say though, Gus is the clumsiest, least agile dog ever. We wanted to do agility but ruled that sucker out as he's just such a dag!

We had an English Setter who lived until a few months ago and I've never met a dog with less road sense! Despite being asked to sit at roadsides from 6 months old he never just did it without prompting in all of his almost 15 years. He would gaily barge onto the road and have to be dragged back. The most amazing dog in all other respects but a dummy on corners. I'd love an Irish one day though.... It's all you can really do. Amazing people think your PB is less healthy because you know the lineage? What the?! How does that even compute? That's my polite roundabout way of saying they usually think purebred dogs are 'inbred'. In my experience there seems to be no consideration of the fact that knowing what genes you're combining will usually (not always, of course) lead to a better (or at least predictable) outcome, as oppose to mixing two gene pools where you don't have the first idea what the outcome will be! Setters are a classic when it comes to roads :) River I'm sure thinks, Oh! Big grey stretch of stuff to smell! Whats that thing? A car? Is there food coming in my direction, I hope so? THERE'S POSSIBLY A CAT IN A THAT BUSH. QUICK. I must run across there as fast as I can! Gotta love them though. What total nutters. I've known BYB puppies to be the product of very veeeeery close matings so that sounds like pot kettle to me. That sounds exactly like Perry. Like nothing bad could, would or ever had happened to him. I do miss him a lot. He was an incredible family dog. Mum, my brother and I see a lot of him in my FCR but one day I'll have another setter...
