  1. I live in Brisbane and semi rural, VERY high tick area, so unsure what to do? Have you heard of huge reactions to advantix, when I was reviewing what to use, I read so many which said it was dangerous? My cats stay well away from our pup, other than a swinging cat claw if they get too close thats all the contact they have yet.. The kids have LOTS of contact and hugs, so its a huge concern and hence why there was a pill, I really hate spot ons!
  2. Yep, we have to use the spot on but dont let the kids touch until dry, the cats are too much of a rsk as we have two. One of my cats is highly allergic to a spot on himself and has to use program. The collar I wont use because of kids, they are always around the puppy and I dont want them to touch the collar and I dont wish to touch it either. So no collars here. If frontline is so poor at tick and flea protection, why do people buy it and why has it been around for so long? I have also read of so many dogs having reactions to advantix, it scared me. I wish they had a decent tablet or injection for ticks and fleas together The cat thing I understand, but not the kid thing. Do some reading on Fipronil. Unfortunately for any of these products to truly be effective there is usually some level of toxic material. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
  3. I was told by the vet NOT to use it if I have cats, thats why I bought frontline plus?
  4. I use frontline as we have cats and young kids. I therfore wont use advantix or collars. Although I worry about efficancy after reviews on this site..
  5. I wish it was legal to carry a weapon as I would walking my dog. Some of the dogs we pass when walking, frankly terrify the living s**t out of me, I am glad they are behind the fence and panic what if they got free. I am small and not too strong, my dog is a pup and I have a 5 yr old child with me. I would happily arm myself if I could and will be buying the legal spray mentioned asap. I do not think ANY dog regardless of how trained they are, should ever be of leash in public areas. If it is a specified off leash area, fair enough, but otherwise, if I see it, I will report it. Its dangerous and frightening. My UK dog was the perfect boy, my jogging buddy for years and always off leash alongside me on the local meadows, where most dogs were off leash. He never ventured more than 2 feet from my side, ever! One time he just went down the side of the cliff, he ran down and I couldnt recall him back, he had NEVER done this before, I trusted him 100%. This one time he bolted, no idea what animal he saw but ended up STUCK in thick mud at the bottom, whilst I screamed and couldnt climb down and nobody came to help us. He finally broke free and scrambled frantically back to me, where I leashed him and took him home. I would NEVER ever let my dog off unleashed again, it taught me valuable lesson..
  6. where do you get spray shield from? We went for a small local walk yesterday and a wild looking dog, snarling and aggressive rushed at the fence at us. this dog looked posessed and I had no other worry than it looked like it wanted to tear us apart! snarling, barking, charging and bouncing of the fence and saliva drooling from its teeth on show.. Was terrifying and its behind a chicken wire and wire fence with wood, I DREAD to think about it getting free, so would like some kind of protection!
  7. Thanks Interesting to know. I have absolutely NO idea on animal nutrition :) just what i have read on forums and the net :) I
  8. Fair enough :) I am certainly no breeder or expert, but I thought, was told and read that the large/giant puppy food slowed down the growth and its best to stay on it longer than 12 mths in larger breed dogs, so I am pretty confused LOL
  9. thanks all. No to doggy door, hubby wont have one and we have cats who are indoor only. Bell sounds cool :) Will get that to try and hope he wont eat it!
  10. I am also at home and would never leave them alone unsupervised :) we are also a active famly with lots of kids for stimulation and exercise. I will def ask around to try and visit some other than the one at the end of the garden :) Hopefully there will be some at training too..
  11. Thanks for all your help :) My hubby also has a work collegue who breeds them in another state, registered breeder so will get him to ask lot :) Will also find a Mal club. I do know somebody who had 2 Mals for 12 yrs and said a pup Mal would be suitable hen my sammy got to around 1. I am not wanting a large age gap in the dogs as we had companion issues with our old sammies, they didnt get along. We have been researching in preventing that this tiem and age gap is a big deal for us. Interesting to know about the fence. I had read they didnt climb or jump fences and from those I know and watch with Mals they dont. But obviusly this is a small sample and what reports say on the net. The Mal at the back is 2 yrs old and wouldnt be able to climb over the fence without jumping, she has tried to get in when we got our puppy, but couldnt.
  12. Thanks :) The one reason we were going to go with Mals as they dont climb and our fence is only approx 4 ft, the one at the back hasnt ever attemted to climb it even when we had chickens... Will check that out, as all I can find researching, is they dig, like a samoyed does :) No lifestock nearby :) thanks for the reply

    Malamutes

Asking here as the Malamute page seems to be abandoned Hi all. We are currently researching for our second dog Our samoyed is 15 weeks and we will be adding a female friend when he is around 1 and desexed. We also have 2 rescue cats, so rescue Mal will be out, as they all say no pocket pets! We love the artic breeds and was owned and loved by 2 sammies in the UK. I do however have a pure love for Huskies and Malamutes. I do not think the running, energetic husky might be as good a match as the slower lovable Malamute. I am after information from those who live with Malamutes. I have dones research and had 10 yrs coping with lots hair, double coats, selective hearing and following commands with my sammies. This time round we are training, our sammie is in training and will be for long term and we will train our addition. As we want one when he is around 1 and he is already almost 4 mths, we are trying to get as much information as possible. We will be getting him a companion, so if it turns out another samoyed is best for him, then so be it, but I cannot pass by attempting a Mal or husky in my lifetime, I have craved this breed for many many years but it wasnt right for us at the time. All info is welcome We live on a half acre with a Mal who lives at the back of us and will be giving plenty of exercise.. :)
  14. I feed holisitc select, we switched from pro plan as I dislike it. I was told to keep him on puppy food until at least 12 mths and maybe longer, for large breed dogs, so he doesnt grow too quickly? I would think he is too young for adult food yet.
  15. oh and the leash is a great tip, thank you
  16. thanks, thats really helpful :) I wouldnt trust him not to chew, but would follow him if he wandered and crate him when I have to do stuff. he currently has a large area in the kitchen family room where we watch tv and spend most of our time, if for any reason someone is not about as we are a large family, we pop him in the crate.. He will still be in his large pen in the garage when we go out...
  17. Hi all Our pup is now 15 weeks.. He is great in the toilet training and sleeps in the crate by our bed from around 11.30 pm until 5-30-6 am. Havent had indoor accidents for quite a while now.. Only when we are not watching as he silently stands by the door and doesnt bark unless he wants a poo, he just looks at us and raises his leg to go out, its really funny.. So we have to watch him like a hawk. I also take him lout after every nap, feed and when he just hasnt been for a while. When is he OK to be given more freedom in the house with supervision? We are currently climbing over sofas, the crate and safety gates which are barriers as we have an open plan home LOL
  18. I am about to try Bonnies too curently at another which is positive only. I have spoken to a few people and they recommend Bonnies highly after trying a few clubs for artic breeds, including the one I am at and didnt find it worked for their dogs as well as Bonnies...
  19. We paid a lot for my puppy, but he is worth every cent.. I never even asked the price and had already put my name down before even being told. We saved and paid whatever she told us it was. I see it as I have a dog who has come from the best parents I can hope for, genetically tested and bred for quality in all areas. I am not into showing or breeding ( leave that to the experts) but I feel although he did cost us a lot of money, I have a companion for hopefully a very long time, a part of the family.. I also know I have advice and help should I need it whenever I need it. Support and a ear if issues arise.

    Going Out

Hi all Does anyone use nobivac? My pup had his final 3rd shot but with nobivac and the vet told me he could go out after 2 weeks, however, when looking on the nobivac site it says immunity in 1 week. Google has mixed from anything from people being told 1 week, 10 days or 2 weeks, so confusing!!! Does anyone know who uses nobivac? thanks
  21. Oh goodness, just read this, so sorry for your loss all these months later, will go read the rest of the posts to catch up, but wanted to say sorry fro your loss xxx
  22. try ebay :) http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DOG-DRYER-PET-DRYER-GROOMING-HAIRDRYER-BLOWDRYER-BLASTER-DRYER-/380684038359?pt=AU_Pet_Supplies&hash=item58a28970d7
  23. I was told to use necks for my samoyed after he swallowed part of a wing, the vet told me never to give wings, huge choke hazzard, necks are better as bones smaller so less likely to cause issues?? I would just like to say my gorgeous Frenchie Gracie had teeth and she choked on a chicken neck
