  1. That is a rip off price for a bitch that small I pay that full price for a 20kg bitch Wait for the heat to finish and desex 7-14 days later Safest thing to do ETA, are they on the Central Coast? PM me for a vet that will do it much cheaper than that
  2. You should be so proud of yourself little talis, Marnie is a lovely girl and under your care she is growing into a lovely dog Well done
  3. Frenchie problem PM Mjosa on DOL, she is a Frenchie breeder and will know what is going on I had a Frenchie who has a similar problem She has a stomach operation to fix it, I would have to dig out vet notes to tell you exactly what was done, but it is common in the breed apparently
  4. Do not take the dog anywhere near the children's play equipment Dogs are not allowed within 500 metres of a playground Call me paranoid, but could well be a trick to issue fines
  5. I will be asking for another opinion Thanks
  6. She went to QLD for foster and then to the vet up there for a check over They have only had her one day and rang me to return her as they cannot afford that much Under my terms and conditions on adoptions pre-existing conditions are covered under the 3 week trial, her foster carer mentioned an occassional limp, but nothing was picked up at her vet check
  7. I have just rehomed a dog that passed a vet check at Renbury but the new owners took her to the vet and she has Luxating Patella which needs urgent vet care They have been quoted $2500.00 which is out of their means Does anyone know a rescue vet in QLD around Brisbane that would do this operation at rescue rates? She is a 12-18 months old Shar Pei
  8. I too will say thanks for the card and photos They are lovely and I will treasure them Marnie is growing into a lovey young lady, you should be very proud of the effort you have put in with her, well done You should be very proud
  9. Thanks, I just wish I was more articulate sometimes would get me out of trouble lol
  10. Please point out where I said a growling dog is always fear aggressive? The OP was concerned enough to ask about a behaviour and I mentioned that fear aggression was one possibility based on two things she described. Thankfully she was sensible enough to talk to a trainer as suggested. A growl does not automatically make it a bad dog and I can't remember anyone saying it did. What it does indicate is that someone who knows what they are talking about should assess the dog as the OP wasn't confident enough to determine what was behind the behaviour. Can you tell me what the hell is wrong with suggesting that an inexperienced person take something seriously, because a dog that growls can mean behavioral issues that would result in a bite in the wrong hands. Seriously, are you trying to tell me that dogs that have bitten people never ever growled first? Do you just follow me around to pick at my comments? I was answering your confusion, you thought I was saying the above Never said all dogs who bite do or do not growl Lots do not growl Never mentioned anything wrong with seeing a Behavourist and actually recommended it myself All my rescues see one if I am unsure of temp issues, better to have someone outside your circle giving you and outside opinion Never said anything was wrong with an inexperienced person asking another for help and frankly and experienced person should too because sometimes the emotional attachment that goes with a rescue dogs leaves them unable to make an unbiased opinion You seriously have a way to twist works jdavis not every dog that bites will growl - there are breed/learned factors that can mean a dog will not growl first. Both my OH and myself have been privvy to these situations. It does happen. Thanks, I was starting to think I was the only one who thought this way Sorry to bring this to your thread I will keep my opinions to myself from now on as jdavis seems to be on my bandwagon?
  11. Adamstown, Hamilton and Lambton all have good clinic Michaela Keen at Lambton is a nice lady and a good vet
  12. Fear aggressive dogs do growl. I don't know if this dog is fear aggressive, which is why I was careful to use the word "might" frequently. My dogs don't growl if I go near their food, if they did I would not accept this as normal and would rectify it. I am the last person to humanise an animal, but I will not accept aggression in my dogs towards humans and I would be concerned enough with this dog to have a professional trainer assess it. I certainly would not consider growling at humans ok by any stretch of the imagination. Again, I am unsure what you really mean as the above two statements are contradictory. Did you mean that fear aggression was not expressed by growling, as you said in the first bit? I did not say that Fear Aggressive dogs do not growl I said that if a dog growls it is not always fear aggression What is wrong with a dog using its growl to voice it displeasure? A warning is always a good thing from an animal, does not make them bad They are dogs growling does not mean aggression - its part of the vocabular repetoire of a dog in order to communicate with a human or another canine. The dog you worry about is the one that doesnt say anything at all and just *bang*. Remember too some breeds communicate differently through growls - there is a play growl which my dogs do with me, there is the rotties growl when he wants his food or attention, there is the malinois growl that someone is on the property and she's heard them at night. Dogs with aggressive reactions are not bad dogs - the truely 'bad' dog is the one that can never be controlled and needs the vet, about .00001% of the dog population is unfixable to some degree. You also have to be careful how 'vigilant' you are as well about something that may be trivial - I have seen owners treat their dogs like they could suddenly morph into the Devil just because they had a growl or showed some teeth once. Have a good investigation and you find the poor dog was just caught in that moment and panicked or reacted from extreme pain/stress etc. So many different possibilities its not fair to tar a dog with the 'untrustworthy' brush because he behaved like a dog. Perfectly said, I wish I could of put my words into exactly what you have written
  13. Because a dog growling is not fear aggression A dog will growl if someone goes to their food, steps on them, etc does not make them a bad dog We try to humanise dogs too much and need to remember they are dogs They will growl when scared Bark when angry or happy Not all growling is fear based
  14. It is a problem if a dog who growls under pressure or fear goes to the average home that has no idea how to deal with this behaviour. What may be nothing to someone who is educated in dog behaviour and knows how to handle it becomes a time bomb in inexperienced hands. Some dogs carry out their threat when pushed, and you don't want the kid of some adopter finding this out the hard way. I did not say place him in a home I said contact a dog trainer or behaviourist to find out why, have him looked at Nothing wrong with a dog that growls, it is a warning, and ofcourse place him in an experienced home :p I sometimes think you just skim posts and not read everything
  15. I honestly cannot see a problem with a dog growling, why is it such a big deal? The dog growled, a growl from a dog is a warning, dog warned it was afraid, scared, or whatever To me a dog that growls is a ok dog, they warn when they are afraid We yell when we are afraid what is the difference Get a trainer, behaviourist to do a Temperament Test Fear aggression is not something to be played with lightly But a dog being put in a cage when they are not used to it (and the changes the dog has been through recently) and then confronted by a person that scares them and they growl does not make them a bad dog, just a frightened one

  18. Wow look how much she has grown She is lovely and I see her eyes are still grey, not brown Love the pic of Marnie chasing Asia, seems Asia likes it too lol
  19. I would not leave a male Pei entire with a first time Shar Pei owner until 8 months peibe baby no offence intended but you have already shown your inexperience with the breed and seeing as Simba is from BYB there is a higher probability that he will have problems with aggression predominately dog aggression I have had over 30 Shar Pei pups desexed at 8 weeks old, none have any issues and the only thing it has done is make them alittle taller as the growth plates close up later Seeing as you are 3 months pregnant with a skin child I would not be allowing a young male Pei to develop into a full blown hormonal teenager with a newborn You are going to have your work cut out for you as it is and thinking of getting another dog in the next 2 years with a skin child and a young Pei boy with eye issues could be an expensive task that you do not need I will not rehome a male Pei to a home with an existing Male Pei unless there is a 6 year gap between the ages and then it depends on the temperament of the dogs Male and female mixes work better
  20. I agree, in fact i recommended they take all their sharpei (particularly their remaining pups) to my vet, which they informed me that they did today! And the other 2 pups are also booked in for eye tacking at the same time as my Simba which is great news. They will be paying for the three of them to get done. Oh that's sad.. I am more attached to animals, in particular dogs, than I am to children!! Some people think im strange.. I would have loved to have become a Vet or help in some way with animals.. Tell me more about what you do.. do people hand over their unwanted pets or do you find them on the streets..?? Pei come from everywhere They are given to me by people who do not want them anymore, but mainly they come from being left in pounds where their owners do not go to get them and they will be put to sleep I do not take all there are too many, just some I actually have a 1 year old Chocolate male at the moment in foster care, left in the pound to die
  21. All pups need homes regardless of how they came into the world We should not be lining people pockets though Seeing as the so called breeders have opted to pay for half it is more than alot of other breeder I know have done The right thing for them to do now is to desex the parents so they do not have any more accidental litters Simba has found a home and he is one of the lucky ones, he has an owner that is willing to get him the vet attention he needs not like the 2 litters through rescue in the last 8 months, all needed eye tacking, elongated soft palate operations and the last 4 all had pinched nares.
  22. Glad you are getting his eye done and have found a good vet to do so The inner eye should go back up when his eyes are not being irritated The swelling etc will also go down Good to hear that the people who breed him are concerned
  23. No Pet Insurance company will cover Entropian in Shar Pei There is a phone number for you to contact in the Shar Pei thread of a vet in Hornsby with Shar Pei eye tacking experience Remember that a Shar Pei is by nature a dominant dog, the time that he is having trouble seeing is an important time in his development and learning social skills. Leaving him untreated and not getting his eye tacked quickly could result in a dog that is fearful, dominant and aggressive, believe me I have one here and I wish every day that the person who owned her before I got her at 5 months had of done something about her eyes, as she is the most adorable girl with us, but will bite strange people and other dogs all due to the 5 months she spent blind before eye tacking Your pup needs to be meeting new people and new dogs, he needs to go to puppy school etc, (until he is vaccinated you should not walk him or take him somewhere not safe, carry him everywhere) Shar Pei can and will be aggressive and dominant if not over socialised and trained as a young pup, whilst he cannot see you are stunting his socialisation that could have far too many damaging affects on his temperament as he grows up I know you want what is best for him which is why you came here, but I cannot stress enough how important it is to get his eyes done quickly
  24. I have just responded in the Shar Pei thread for you I gather that your pup was not from a Registered Breeder as he is too young This is one reason his eyes have not been tacked There is a vet at Hornsby (I will find the number) that will do an eye tacking Do not take him to a vet that does not know Shar Pei Do not allow anyone to preform and entropian operation on him until he is 12 month, unless you have had multiple tackings first and they are not working Pet Insurance will not cover Eye Tacking and Entropian Surgery, they are problems within the breed Shar Pei are very expensive dogs to own sometimes If you need help call me on the number below ETA, before you can get his eye tacking done put a little bell like from a cats collar on your wrist so he can follow you
  25. I have been told hat Marnie is a good girl She eats her dinner, goes outside to go toilet and sleeps happily in her crate Hopefully LT will be along soon to update properly
