  1. Yup I understand and yes their choice and I also understand if they want to not forgive ever not my place to try to force or convince them. I have no clue what you are going on about with the greyhounds. The two I had when I was on this forum one was adopted and I am facebook friends with her and the dog is very spoiled and in a good home. The other one was also adopted and doing well how that is damaging the breed I do not know. Seems to me that in the last year a few more greyhound rescues have popped up and although they all seem to be full all the time it seems that a lot of greyhounds are being saved, I even referred someone to GAP to get a dog and they did and are very happy with their new dog. So you have me stumped on this one but if that is how you feel so be it I wont ever change your mind.
  2. Is this up to each rescue to decide or is there a recommended temp test that needs to be done? The rest is great and can live by them just wondering about this bit here. Hmm, not sure! They do have courses available but I haven't seen if there is temp test stuff. I'll email Julie, she can pop in and explain further. Honesty about temperament and/or special needs is a must but then again we all have different skills and knowledge. There's certain breeds or traits I have zero rehoming experience with (for example aussie working breeds) so wouldn't just take a rough guess, rather I would seek advice from those with expertise to help me assess a suitable home. Yup I agree with you there it would be great to have a group dedicated to helping each other with breed traits and advice, I am sure there already is one but if not would be great where rescue people can ask honest advice and get some good suggestions. I generally ask a breed specific rescue to take a dog if it needs rescue and I dont know about them for instance if a silky came to me I would ask you if you could take it seems better that way for the dogs.

  4. Do you have a link :) http://www.mdba.net.au/ Being a member isn't the solution to everything but Julie is always there to help and as a rescue member, I find it gives people a little more confidence. If we did anything wrong by an adopter they could seek resolution via MDBA as a 3rd party. There isn't another org who does that as far as I know. Narga were trying to set up as some kind of national body but I don't want to know. Thanks I will look into it.
  5. Yes, yes and yes. Don't goo goo him or he will walk all over you. You need to be firm but calm with them, don't give an inch or they they don't just take a mile they book a round the world trip  oh but they seem so meek and quiet at times. The snapping and also prodding with the nose sharply is belgian. They're as fast as lightening but you see it brewing subtly in the face. Tell them to rack off from the situation if they try and pull crap like that around you or other dogs. Put him in his crate and that's that. Lovely dogs though :p Yup he has tried to break the rules a few times he knows he isnt allowed on the bed unless invited and you can see him thinking about it but once he sees you give him the look he backs up but not after trying to sneek up when he thinks you are not paying attention. Very smart dogs but can see where they could run a household in no time if allowed.
  6. So I assume this is new because when I phoned RSPCA about a rescue that never walked the dogs after I documented how often the dogs got our over a few week period and they said they had no rules on how often a caged dog needed to be walked. Firstly, it's Vic only. Secondly, it's a breeders CoP. Shelters have a separate CoP. Ah ok thanks for pointing that out.
  7. No I wasnt putting my ego first and no dog has suffered because of me. Even when I was in sydney I fought tooth and nail worked 10-12 hours a day to make sure the dogs in my care were happy and well cared for. I refused a $1000 bribe and went through a ton of stress to try to protect dogs and make sure they got a carer who cared for them. I fought in the tribunal just to try to get 90 more days with the dogs so others could find a proper carer for the dogs. I have always put the dogs first. I am not blaming anyone but myself for the way I acted.
  8. I hope you are staying away from greyhounds. I own 1 grey.
  9. Sorry here they are but yes thats me http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/256615-my-apologies-to-all/ http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/256465-rescue/

  11. I think Greyhounds get recommended because there are a lot of them looking for homes. I do wonder how well many of those keen to see a Greyhound rehomed understand the breed or its needs. And I also wonder why less than ideal situations for most dogs are considered OK for Greyhounds. I am not sure but I think that people assume because they are kept in kennels while racing and from my experience they are not big complainers that equates to them being ok or happy. I guess people think if its just a bit better than how they are cared for in racing kennels then its fine for them. of course I was once told if a dog has to endure being uncomfortable for a few months or so to find a forever home its ok.
  12. A greyhound run 45 minutes? My girl would drop dead she does a rush around the house twice and thats it she is puffed. I think greyhounds get recommended because for a large dog they are on the easy side like they can be happy in apartments etc but there is so much to consider when getting a grey, are you ever going to want a dog that can live with cats or small dogs as some even with training will have a go at a cat or small dog, are you ever going to want to go to a dog park and let the dog off lead with others I wouldnt risk this with my girl and she lives very well with small dogs and cats but that doesnt mean she will do fine at a dog park.
  13. Couldnt an organization be made to kinda self police rescues where rescues can get registered and this organization can deal with it? So when people are adopting they can go to this organization to get recommendations of which rescues to contact?
  14. I just dont understand why if he was suppose to be desexed its even under consideration to not do it. I guess that means that if other dogs are turned in and rescues want to get them from the pound and then adopt them out not desexed this is ok? How can we tar rescues for not desexing but then be ok with another dog rescued from a pound for being intact because he is a rare breed? Is a rescued dog a rescued dog? Cant he get in trouble for not getting the dog desexed when he signed saying he would and it was a condition for getting the dog out?
  15. DAS doesn't do the desexing themselves, they release dogs with a voucher for it to be done so it relies on the person actually getting it done themselves. Great idea about contacting his breeder! Ok they used to desex . But I note the condition of release ... All dogs released from the DAS Shelter must comply with de-sexing requirement in accordance with the Domestic Animals Act 2000, within 28 days of their release. So therefore that dog must be desexed... Thats if they have the time or want to follow up with the dogs.
  16. Dilute kelpies have existed for years. Yes thats why I laugh when they say its a rare color. I still see people say "rare blue am staff" just gotta laugh I just never understood someone paying a ton more for a dog based on color. ETA: I am sure that we will see more and more blues as once people catch on that you can charge more for a blue kelpie and it will sell faster they will head that route which is sad because people will then not focus on the important things like working ability, conformation
  17. Is any breed safe from the blue craze? I now am seeing blue and tan Kelpies pop up and of course they are more expensive because its a rare color. Sigh when will people learn to choose a dog for temperament and health rather than color.
  18. Just something to get decent pictures of the dogs and kids, my samsung is ok but just doesnt have that crisp look to the pictures if that makes sense. One that under a couple hundred dollars just snap no need to change lenses and all that because I wouldnt know what I was doing anyway
  19. Are there any reasonably priced digital cameras that are of decent quality?
  20. I should point out that Sophie the greyhound has always slept with my daughter she is actually her dog so she is generally 100% with my daughter, her life hasn't changed because of George. I know I didn't mention that before but probably should. Someone said that sometimes coming up to say hi could be something different and your right it happened so quick that I didn't even notice how Sophie approached. Ill call a behaviorist and see how we go.
  21. Seems George has decided that we are all his and took a bite at my greyhound. She is fine no damage done she was just scared but any suggestions so this doesnt happen again? He was near me and she walked over to say hi and he gave her a bite on the face. There was no food or treats involved. She walked off and he seemed very happy about that. I put her in my daughters room as thats where she sleeps and him in my room.
  22. No it hasnt i know that but if I wanted a puppy i would go through a registered breeder but if there wasnt registered breeders the chances of me buying a pup from a byb is much higher
