  1. I am posting this question for a Canadian friend who has a male desexed 2 year old red rescue dobermann. According to her vet it is thyroid related but she thinks it is Colour Mutant Alopecia, hisback along the spine looks like I have been attacked by a moth. He is on omega 3, melatonin, thyroid pills and she is trying to get him to eat really good food, but he is a Beneful junkie, so she mixes the food trying to fool him but it is not working. Does antyone have experience with this and suggestions on supplements to increase the coat and for over all good health. Zinc has been suggested but what would this help with?
  2. You could also think about a Koolie for agility as well - there are some doing really well in it both here and in New Zealand.
  3. The most popular colours in Koolies are red and blue merle but they also come in dilute merles and solids and farmers often prefer the solids because they can be steadier workers. They also come in tri which is rather nice and a mix which looks like some types of blue cattle dog.
  4. The Koolie Club sometimes has schools up in the Hunter - PM me your email address and I will have you put on the mailing list.
  5. Thanks for all the comments which I have passed on - I think she is changing her mind and will look for a girl rescue instead.
  6. Thank you all for your comments - I will pass them on to her.
  7. A friend in Canada has a desexed male dobe she adores. He is about 2, friendly, loves playing with other dogs. She has met another rescue dobe, also male, about the same age and would like to adopt him. He has met her dog on a playdate and all went well. The woman who runs the local rescue is a breeder and has only undesexed dogs (the rescue is desexed) and she is concerned about rehoming to a home where there is already a male living. The dogs would be living in a quiet household with two adults and would get lots of exercise and social interaction with other dogs. Does anyone have any advice for her on this?
  8. Six years after I got Perry as an abused dog she actually came and cuddled me - I never thought I would experience that.
  9. You poor thing = I can understand how you feel but it was just an accident and accidents happen. He is in the best place to get the care he needs and hopefully he will come through this well. Fingers crossed for you and Mojo.
  10. I am so sorry Ollie has finally gone.
  11. Latte sits on the back ledge and rounds up all the other cars Flash sits in the back but leans his head on my shoulder, I say to him "Constable (insert the local traffic cop's name here) will get you" and he automatically sits back in the seat I put him in a harness once that clipped into the seatbeat, stopped at the end of the journey and he jumped out, he had chewed through it Perry has not bothered chewing through - she just stretches her harness and seat belt as far as it will go. She knows a lot of the local police and is convinced that they are all her very best friends.
  12. I don't think you would get a mortgage on such a low salary. I think puddleduck's suggestion is a good one.
  13. Perry is a back seat driver but is eager to become a front seat one. She sits in the back but leans forward with her head on my shoulder and barks at anything she does not approve of such as road machines, large trucks, garbage trucks, and cars with loud doof doof stereos.
  14. I am hiding the car keys from Perry who is really keen to try it, she has been told she has to have a licence first but her view is the police cannot be everywhere and many of the local ones are her friends and would let her off.

  16. Intelligent and interested in everything but has an off switch Great with people and other dogs Wash and wear coat not requiring too much grooming Likes to cuddle Healthy and pretty I have found all of these traits in my Koolie.
  17. Koolies are well worth considering - although they like a walk they can also become very keen on ball games and if I am not in the mood for walking Perry and I play catch for half an house about 3 times a day. She prefers that to walks - she does not mind walking if we are going somewhere for a specific purpose - eg to the shop to buy the paper but does not like walking just for hye sake of it. They are very bright and you need to keep their minds exercised but you can do this with herding, flyball, agility, obedience training, or just teaching them a lot of tricks. They come in short or medium long coats, have very nice temperaments, love children, are good watch dogs. Perry has a medium long coat and she sheds all year but it is soft and silky fur and easy to vacuum - otherwise she is a wash and wear dog - she gets a hydrobath every 4 weeks, rarely gets brushed because she hates it but her coat does not matt. They are medium sized - about the same as a border collie or a kelpie. Koolie Rescue have a lovely two year old girl who is looking for a home - a red merle - PM me if you are interested.
  18. Depending on who was teaching it then yes I would be interested.
  19. I would go with the rescue because I am not prepared for the amount of work a puppy causes. I got Perry as an interstate rescue after I saw her photo on DOL and talked to the people at Koolie Rescue about her and her needs. When I met her it was love at first sight and we have been inseparable for nearly 8 years now. I had a four week trial period with her but there was never any question of her going back - she was meant to be with me. With a grown dog what you see is what you get - puppies are unnown territory.
  20. Perry likes plain Greek Yoghurt - I give her 3 or 4 tablespoonfuls sometimes with meat, especially if she is having lamb, sometimes just on its own.
  21. I have always left Perry inside and she has full run of the house. The only problem I had was the first week when she knocked some tea bags off a kitchen bench into her water bowl, tookk them out of the wet box and spread them on the carpet to dry, when they were not drying fast enough she chewed open the bags and scattered the tea leaves to let them dry faster, they still would not dry fast enough so she shredded a box of tissues and spread them across the tea leaves. I came home to the mess and a very worried dog who was convinced she would be beaten because that was what her previous owner had done. I just put my hands over my face because I did not know whether to laugh or cry and walked around saying - this is bad, very bad. Then we went for a couple of hours walk, when we came back she had dinner in the garden and I cleaned up the mess and I have never had a problem since.
  22. Thanks Bertie - my link workked when I tried it but obviously not for you.
  23. Now available from http://www.perryskooliecards.com/. All profits to Koolie Rescue. Special price for DOLers - $15 for 6 cards including postage - just PM me.
  24. I have only ever had one dog - I am not sure I could manage two and I know that my current dog would not welcome a second dog - we are very close and she likes it that way - she does not want anyone else sticking their sticky paws in.
  25. I did not take the photo it came via a friend in Canada who also did not take it so since we cannot give credit I would go ahead and copy it.
