I think it's very important to consider your lines with JRT as there are differences in temperament- although not directly linked to coat type. My breeder had a litter that consisted of 2 rough coats, one broken coat and one smooth coat- all with gorgeous temperaments because the parents were amazing. I would go back to her for another JRT in a heartbeat- we got everything we wanted and more with our rough coat from her.

We have ours in suburbia too- but we're not really the average home.

My youngest dog is an ACD who is nearly 11 months old- unfortunately confined after surgery for elbow dysplasia. While we're feeling pretty unlucky at the moment, we are lucky that she has come from a breeder who bred an excellent, true ACD temperament and that we've spent so much time training her- makes the confinement easier for everyone. Interesting the thoughts on reds vs blues- it's not something i have noticed but i think you would need a really large sample of blue and red dogs, different sexes to see whether the reds are a bit sharper.

I have plenty of experience with Cattle dogs and their derivatives. The thing that people need to understand about ACD's is that generally speaking they are dogs that are quick to react. When i say react i'm not referring to aggression, i'm speaking in the true sense of the word- they are quick to react. So when not socialised well, trained and managed well- this tendency to be quick to react can lead to aggression or other problematic behaviours. They are also extremely intelligent so problem behaviours in some other dogs that might take 10- 100 repetitions to become a bad habit, an ACD will only need 2-3 reps to end up with the same outcome. Before owners have even realised what's happening they have a serious problem. Honestly- most people shouldn't have Cattle dogs. Most people aren't quick enough to react themselves and coupled with a dog that is quick can create problems. But a WELL BRED, ACD in an experienced home is absolutely awesome and we would always have them in our life. I have had people ask me the difference between a border collie, kelpie and ACD. I use the following analogy as part of my explanation- hopefully i don't offend anyone and it's not meant to be taken literally- not suggesting anyone goes around poking dogs... Poke a border collie and they'll giggle Poke a kelpie and they'll bounce around saying 'yeah, lets go' Poke an ACD and they'll simply stare at you and say seriously 'DON'T'

I agree 100% with HW's last post. Children make mistakes- they shouldn't have to suffer consequences like this for such an error of judgement.

Puppies are certainly not safe from a wide variety of aggressive behaviours and/or attacks.

Elbow And Hip Dysplasia In 5mth Old Gsd Male Puppy
Cosmolo replied to gsd_glenwood's topic in General Dog Discussion
Can someone please link the evidence for the stat that the incidence of HD is 73% higher in dogs that have been desexed early? What about female dogs being desexed early? While not a magic bullet at all desexing CAN make a difference to some behavioural problems and does make a difference to how well dogs are received in situations like dog parks etc which many owners wish to frequent. -
Sorry but I'd simply not recommend a weimaraner to any full time worker. Their need for company should not be underestimated. I find vizlas a little more adaptable- worth considering.

Has Anyone Used One Of These Before
Cosmolo replied to silentchild's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have used back on track boots and rugs on my horses and yes I believe that they made a difference. -
Breed absolutely makes a difference. Be careful- i know of a number of situations where bitches were fine together, until they weren't. The ability to separate when you're not supervising is important.
-
I will be going back to her when we want our next JRT too. Hope she keeps breeding for a long time. I'd go back to the breeder of our young ACD too- our two experiences with registered breeders giving us dogs with precisely the temperament we were after have been awesome.
-
She certainly has not passed away! Blazeaway is Gilbert's breeder. And yes he is the best jack russell terrier in the world..
-
My Jack Russell terrier (Gilbert) has an excellent temperament- IMO very much a correct JRT temperament. Taking what was there and moulding it from the day he came home has created a dog that would not be out of place in a variety of dog sports if we so desired AND is an exceptional pet/ companion. Terriers are of course different to gundogs and herding dogs. BUT a correct JRT temperament IS suitable for performance if the owner/ trainer knows what they're doing and does it from the start. Conformation is important too- Gilbert has structure that allows him to run all day and look effortless while doing it- you need the complete package for performance, same as with horses.

Aggression Between Dogs In The Same Household
Cosmolo replied to Salukifan's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I know too many instances where dogs have been great friends- until. Caution is needed with multi dog homes and breed, sex, age and general temperament/ stability all have an impact. -
Dog Training Establishments In Victoria
Cosmolo replied to wayrod's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Exactly wayrod- 90% of the COP is irrelevant anyway!! And the councils give such different information regarding reg requirements. It's quite ridiculous. -
Dog Training Establishments In Victoria
Cosmolo replied to wayrod's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
A few years ago a council asked us about our DAB reg- proving we were registered as a DAB in another council and had paid our $236 and proof of our insurance was enough. I don't have a problem with being registered as a DAB but paying the fee fifteen times.. that I would fight. -
Dog Training Establishments In Victoria
Cosmolo replied to wayrod's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Surely they can't expect businesses to register in every area they work in? Do you have a reference for that specifically? That would add up to thousands of dollars for people like us and is the epitome of double dipping surely.. -
We service that area as well. :)
-
Wow.. they are way more expensive than i expected. Thanks for that. That's so nice of you Ams- thank you.
-
Thanks but i want something that only counts barks with no corrective function.
-
Does anyone know where you can buy bark counting collars that record the number of times a dog barks when an owner isn't there? Thanks!

Rosie Seems To Actually Be Getting More Anxious...
Cosmolo replied to Steph M's topic in General Dog Discussion
Suggesting the OP see someone who has the ability to prescribe medication IF required is not the same as jumping straight to medication. Only people who have seen the dog know whether that is appropriate and i take it from your post Nek that you do know the dog in which case you are privy to info the rest of us are not. :) -

I would strongly recommend contacting Dr Robert Holmes. I think you do need a vet behaviourist given the problems she has and what you have tried as medication in conjunction with a behaviour mod program, may be required.
