  1. Mrs Rusty Bucket you should meet our Maxi - he's a bit metro and will run and hide than stand up for himself at all (the rescue we have tried this week he literally hides behind us at times as the rescue was quite dominant with him) so we need to find a similar female or start with a puppy 'of his own kind'. Thank you for the suggestions so far I will follow up (I tried to look at the breeders page on Dogs SA but possibly it wasnt displaying properly on the computer at work).Maxi photo
  2. Hi Have had a look though the breed pages on Dogzonline and there seem to be many breeders with pups available from everywhere but South Australia. I've checked over the last month or so and plenty interstate none in SA. Is this normal as after trying a rescue dog on trial as a companion to our current lab (who was a rescue) we decided we either need to find a submissive female lab or a female lab puppy (the extra work involved with a puppy would be worth it than the stress of unsuccessful rescue placements). Thank you for any suggestions/help.
  3. Dont think the cost was any different for us but it WAS a different product - might be the same active ingredients but like I saidthe old dog had no reaction to the 3 year but did for the annual (and she was a pin cushino due to cartrophan every 6 months so it wasnt just the extended time). You do still have to get the kennel cough each year.
  4. Its slightly different perhaps it was a 'non active' ingredient but our old dog use to have a reaction to the yearly one but she handled the 3 yearly one a LOT better (annual create a huge lump behind her head at the injection site afterwards - when our vet changed to the other one for 3 years there were no lumps nothing). It was a while back but I think it was like getting a different brand of medication for people same thing but some react differently to the inert ingredients.
  5. SO if you have the same issues with the same dog - once is an accident but if it happens again same dogs with a no care owner people should just avoid the area instead of something being done about that one owner? Better people keep reporting the one owner & dog or one group in particular and have someone have a chat to them than leaving them to it until a dog is attacked and then its 'he said she said' with them saying well its never happened before. Maybe its because I have bigger dogs and most of the issues were with small dogs so if mine had to ever defend themselves they would be seen as the 'bad guys' simply due to size so I guess I prefer to cover myself and my dogs if the same problems happen with the same out of control dogs
  6. When our older dog died a few weeks ago we had over a months worth of medication leftover. My plan is to return it to the vet and ask that it be issued to someone just starting out with the treatment for their pet (since diagonsis involves the vet consultation, blood test, food etc and then when you add the medication cost its a lot in one hit whereas a months worth of medication to get them started would help out with the ongoing cost). Is this unusual? I didn't want to throw it out because some was only just issued from the vet and untouched a few days prior while the other is expensive but giving away or selling didnt seem right as they are suppose to be issued by a vet who is monitoring the dog being treated.
  7. Why is everyone so worried with reporting to council? At least at the councils Ive been in its been different when I have reported problems and ask if there was some way they could perhaps have a chat to educate the owner compared to the one time I reported an actual dog attack as it would not back off and went my dog until I actually kicked it then continued to yell at it until the woman actually grabbed it before it dashed out of the property again. And the councils have been good - the reported attack well the dog apparently was owned by her son while the second loose dog that stayed in the property was hers but it was a block of units and no actual fenced yard. When I asked that they look into talking to owners well I did notice a random person suddenly turn up at the local park where they let their dogs off lead without any control - and sometime later didnt see the dogs again until I spotted them being walked on lead. The new council I mentioned above and it took a number of visits before they spoke to the other dog owners too and the later council did get back to me. They'd rather just educate people than have to go to the extent of fines or worse as many people have no idea that letting dogs charge at others is a problem. And OMG Id be reporting someone who took a sick dog with kennel cough to a dog park - not just the direct dog contacts but if it drinks from the water bowl etc etc. We had to delay bringing our current dog home from the rescue as he had contracted kennel cough when being desexed for the rescue and we didnt want to expose our 13yo relatively healthy older dog until he was well and truly declared over it. And yes we use to take both of them to dog parks on the odd occasion - vaccination doesnt cover all KC strains
  8. As our old dog got older she had issues with sitting - we did not make her sit at all and she used her front legs to basically pull herself up moreso than pushing with the back - I wouldnt make an old dog sit or get up over and over once they had hind end issues at all. But we did get her out on daily walks as possible and let her go the speed she wanted if that was a walk so be it if it was the weird jog she developed fine but it was gnerally old dog bounce or walking in the last year. If she sat it was when she started to tire after standing up such a in the car.
  9. I have however reported idiot owners to the council - once is an accident but a second time I report - there were (and they still do but they grab them quicker now) people who let their little dogs run around in a park with their leads dragging. One in particular was very aggressive and charged us while the younger dog was still very excitable and we had the old dog so I was very defensive of her - both of mine on lead. I just hated the idea that the little aggressive thing would get past me and have mine especialy the younger one that was way bigger defend himself. Council assured me that if mine are on a lead and attacked by offlead my dog would not automatically be at fault. They also did eventually find these people and had a long chat about having their dogs running around like that (since we do have guide dogs in the area too so while I could see them coming a person with a guide dog wont have a chance) but the owners didnt seem to care regardless of what scenario and was quite aggressive themselves towards to the council person. But I guess they do grab them but they shouldnt be risking it in the first place but not much you can do
  10. First I would leave the injurede dog at home - if they like being out and about they could be frustrated being carried instead of running? Anyway a few days at home while you take the active one out shoudl be OK - can you leave a food treat it will chew on perhaps? Second - try to teach your younger dog to move behind you so you can deal with the oncoming dog. Then you can decide if they are aggressive, eager, puppy, friendly etc. You can also step in front of it and growl something at the oncoming dog (get back, sit, git outta it, whatever - if they are charging at your dog and they then look at you they should back off). All else fails if your dog is behind you then you will get a good kick into the front of the shoulder and dogs back off pretty quick when met with that. And might get the owner to do something if they arent making one step to try and control their dog. If a kick only makes them step back I follow up with yelling/growling and stomping that foot down to get ready for next kick if it comes again (yes I had to do this with an off lead aggressive dog that went for mine and missed by a millimetre or at least I couldnt find anything when I checked). Friendly dogs I just watch closely to make sure no one pushes it too hard and usually the owners of these dogs ARE in pursuit and grab them.
  11. Thanks Stitch - yes if you think you can see a slight improvement you probably are hopefully they do work as it made a difference to ours most times (there was tne odd course where there was little improvement but generally more noticable in winter)
  12. At 11 with no obvious issues I wouldnt do anything as yet re joint/arthritis supplements etc. Then you have somewhere to go when he starts to show up issues. AS an older dog the vets usually suggest an annual blood test which will tell you whats going on where you cannot see. Keep him relatively fit and not overweight (if they are too heavy this will make them more suspectible to joint issues. Our old dog started cartrophan shots when she was 6 until 2 weeks ago at 17. From 6 those twice year courses of 4 weeks worked wonders. If she went sore I found that having rapigel available and putting it on before and after walking (just cut down the distance if she was sore) was more beneficial than complete rest (if its arthritis not an injury). I would wash it off after an hour. When just the cartrophan wasnt quite working the next move was to go to joint powder - probably started that around 11 or 12 I think so 5 or 6 years after the cartrophen started. I did try magnets but she wouldnt have anything to do with the magnetic rug. Probably 4 or 5 years ago (12 or 13) her blood tests showed kidney issues so she was on medication for that ever since. She had the kidney food for a while but one brand stopped making it and the other brand upset her so we stuck to the old dog supercoat food. Last couple of years (so around 15) she moved onto the vet mobility joint food and other joint treats but drank too much on just that food so was half and half with the old dog supercoat food. But we waited before bring each option in as if you throw everything at once later on you've got nothing else to try. Ultimately we lost her last week at 17yo - weak leg bones ascaused by her kidneys probably getting to the end and a massive spleen tumour. But all the arthritis supplements we had added over the years had done their job. Until last Novemember she was generally still going on 2km walks every day (sometimes she'd be sore but she'd be ok in a few days). And on her last day she bounced her old dog bounding (she thought she was sprinting but it was the speed of a medium jog to us) for the entire 1.2km walk. In November it appears she had a very very mild stroke (compared to the previous ones) and had a lot of coordination issues and was a lot weaker in her hind end and sore in her back - she was then put on Neurotin as that was the only anti inflam she could have being on the kidney tablets. SHe also started to get that 'old old dog look' more and more from last September - prior to that you wouldnt have guessed her age and many commented she had plenty of time left. My parents Golden Retriever was about 15 when they lost him too - dogs are living to older ages these days if things are caught and treated early.
  13. Thanks Tassie. Still getting use to her not being around. Stitch our old dog use to improve overnight after the first injection - she was on the 4 week course every 6 months. Even the last week and a half we had her she'd just started a few course. Slight improvement after the first one and in her last 3 days she did seem to be showing some benefit after the second. Its suppose to work as it build up over the four weeks so she usually surprised them when I said it helped after the first one of the course.
  14. OUr old dog started off with cartrophen injections from the age of 6 until last week (17) - they made a difference from the start and I think were making a difference with this course as we were just had jab 2 of 4. She was then started on the Joint Guard powder with her food and that seemed to help for at least 4 or 5 years I think. She was also getting one of those joint treats from teh supermarket a day (the heart shaped ones) and finally stgarted on the joint Mobility food frm the vet last winter. And keeping her active (if she went lame I had rapigel for that put on before walk put more on afterwards and then hose off a hour later also seemed to help though she hated it). Then last November she started on Neurotin from the vet twice a day as well which seemed to help (she couldnt have normal anti inflams due to the treatment for chronic kidhey disease) And none of that caused any health issues at all. Even on Saturday morning she bounced her old dog bounding nearly all the way up and back of her 1200m walk not to mention bouncing around the front yard first thing - she was a month into being 17 years old. She was put down Saturday night after snapping the hing leg above the knee and could not stand up with just one good hind leg - xrays showed that her bones were lacking calcium which the vet said was due to her kidney disease and there was calcification in her kidneys and a 12cm diameter tumour on her spleen. But she started the cartrophen when she was only 6 years old and was still walking about 2km on her walks til last Nov when something else happened to her that cause weakness in her hind end but all the arthritis treatments as above only helped her to keep active which together kept her going for so long.
  15. Watched this on tv this morning and yes thought there was a lot more to it since councils don't seize and destroy dogs for ebing off lead and 'saying hi'. Though the owner saying that 'rushing' was something 'all dogs' did and gthat he was saying hi just made me angry. Obvoiusly they are standing back telling upset people its good their dog is friendly rather than its being a one off and running to grab the dog and apologising to the other owner. And in this case blaming the swf is unfair. The dog has been off lead in an on lead area but she said its an 'understanding' that's its all fine in their 'area' as they live across from a park. Sorry what? The dog has rushed other dogs and owners - rushing is not puppy bouncing all friendly like rushing is a lot more serious and can lead to attacks especially if the owner has always let it go and not disciplined their dog for not returning when called or bothered to train their dogs. I would have thought as mentioned here the dog would have been under some kind of dangerous dog order as the step prior to seize and destroy but on tv they didn't mention that. Owner hasn't worried about controlling or training the dog and its learnt it can get away with harassing other dogs which may have led to something more once again owner doesn't take responsibility early and the dog now suffers as it wouldn't have known any better and is now a menace.
  16. We've had one for ages near the kitchen / dining but I was still getting attacked by mozzies in another room so now have a second one pointing across the room to the window. The fly death toll has jumped up amazingly and so far its kept the mozzies at bay too. You can turn them off and on if you only wanted the area protected in the afternoon or evening not all day.
  17. Lets see - dog tennis balls they last about 3 1/2 seconds, normal tennis balls maybe 5 minutes but tournament tennis balls - the really tough ones well he has had them for best part of a year and he hastn cracked the inside of it yet. Dogs teeth chew on bones - I don't think a bit of tennis ball covering is going to do a lot of damage. Sorry but considering what else they chew on a tennis ball is fairly soft and flexing a ball isn't going to grind down teeth.
  18. I don't think much of them firstly because of what they did to me over something unrelated to their actual work with the animals - had they be up front with me it would have saved a lot of time etc. And more recently their stance as an activist organisation against horse racing (and other things but racing is what I know). Apparently they can do little about horses starving to death in paddocks but campaign against horse racing where the animals receive the best care possible (happy fit healthy horses perform at their best) - they've lost my support when they waste money over such advertising and then plead for donations to look after the animals in their care. Animals in their care & the staff that look after them SHOULD be the first and foremost priority for their funding. But that's just my opinion.
  19. Teach your dog to stay at heel if approached like that and then learn how to aim a kick at a shoulder IF when you step in front and yell at the oncoming dog (get angry and tell it its 'git outta it' or similar). There is no right that says you need to allow another dog to come near yours. If the owner wont control it a kick in the shoulder will make the dog think twice. You must have confidence though do not show you are concerned - stand tall and believe you are in control. Also obedience classes are the best way to give your dog social interaction that is controlled with rules (they get to socialise after the class on lead at least where I went a few weeks back and even one time seems to have helped I will go back when we can). Just re read - didn't realise he was away from where you were though if any dog ever 'bit' one of mine the next second it would get a hell of a kick (especially if I had momentum from running) and then chased off in fear for itself from me. If these dogs ever cross paths again make sure you have the camera on your phone ready too so you can get a photo of these dogs.
  20. I have a little dog and I'd wonder if she had lost her mind if she tormented a larger dog, she's never been that way inclined fortunately. :) I think it's excellent that the local council reacted so well, I'm guessing they were the strange guys hanging around in the park  sometimes the rangers having a word with someone is enough to make them see the light. Your experience shows it's worth reporting to the council. I only report the scary aggressive dogs, the other ones who are all fanfare, who do a 180 when you shout, I don't bother about them, they always have an owner in hot pursuit anyway. With the two shih tzus one would be in front and th eother would try and circle around behind and duck in. By the 4th time I came across them from behind bushes I just charged them with all intentions to land a kick and they went from charging at me to run flat out the other way. Owner still did nothing - even changing around the edge once you saw them made no difference as this owner took them off lead to the park and they acted as if the park was their own backyard territory (I watched as a young submissive dog came across them - our younger dog we have now would not have tolerated them in the pack attack which was the exact defensive bigger dog behaviour I wrote to the council about. Yes they were young blokes that were similar types to the rangers that had been seen around the area and just hanging out in the park but not regulars so always suspected they were rangers blending in. Of course the little dogs were never around when I saw the blokes there.
  21. If a dog approaches me and its friendly then I'll pat it but I wouldn't approach a dog that didn't make an approach to me. That said years ago I was taking photos at the SA Agility at west beach and I was checking a board for something between the morning and afternoon events and this dog just shoved itself under my arm so I patted him. Owner was delighted when she turned around and was partly in shock that he was happily being patted. Apparently this particular dog was usually very shy and didn't like being approached and patted by strangers - the difference I think was that I had my back to him and didn't realise the dog was there (owner had two or three and was looking the other way and just happened to be behind me with dogs). LIttle Shetland sheepdog and he must have been a bit cat like in personality (cats tend to always approach people in a home that don't like cats as apparently they tend to ignore the cat and are therefore considered by the cat as less threatening than a stranger who is actively calling the cat). It was when Port Power won the grand final so many years ago now. Owner was like saying it was completely unknown for the dog to look for attention and Im like he shoved his head under my arm so I patted him.
  22. There is a difference in 'reporting' as in the form that says yes you would go to court etc and contacting the council and voicing your concern over dogs out and about. When we only had our older dog she knew to stay at heel if approached by dogs especially hostile ones. Well the two shih tzus that the owner thought was funny when they rushed at and circled behind other dogs. First time I yelled at the owner. Second time I contacted council, third time I contacted council and eventually council gave me the number to call for loose dogs. I simply said I was concerned that the owner found it funny and while I had been able to drive them off I feared if they attacked the wrong dog and owner and if the attacked dog fought back and if bigger damaged the smaller dogs the innocent owner would have all sorts of issues as it would be likely to get the blame. I said the owners need to be made aware and that they were off lead in an on lead area too where there was a playground (they later also fenced the playground) and I told others if they thought the same about those dogs to also contac the council with concerns. Eventually strange blokes would just be 'hanging around' the park and when I last saw them the dogs were being walked at night on leads. When a dog came flying out and tried to attack mine (backed off only when I kicked it in the shoulder inches from my dog- poor thing the way it reacted it was like it had been struck before). A second dog came out but kept its distance bouncing around but this one tried again but wasn't chancing my kick again. person finally came out. I reported this as I had to stop that dog at the last second - ranger went there and apparently it was her sons dog and was just staying there (these were ground floor units with no yards of fences) on a temp basis. Ranger advised them on the rules on keeping the dog inside its property (had come onto the footpath). One I didn't report was a dog that came up and seemed friendly then jumped on the back of my dog and tried to mouth her neck closely followed by the owner who had accidentally left the gate open and the dog had ducked out. It was a genuine error and the dog I think was trying to dominate as there was no drool or damage at all (she was sore in the days following). The dog never got out before and never did after it (and they moved soon after anway) and the bloke was genuinely sorry that the dog had got out. This was before all the above incidents.
  23. You need to be able to set up one of those video cameras and video what is happening - got to be cheaper than boarding, lawyer letters etc. If you have a video that shows your dog in the yard and not barking that makes council go elsewhere very quickly. On the other hand if the dog is barking make sure you can see the fences in case there is something like the neighbour setting the dog off.
  24. Dogs are predators and they will hunt if it interests them. We came back from a walk and the young one nearly had him a Galah that was sleeping on the front yard and we pretty much walked into (it would eat then sleep in the afternoons and I didn't see it til he pounced and it squawked and flew off. But both are trained to ignore magpies and the magpies ignore them on the front yard and when out on a walk.
  25. Cant you block all but 'important updates'. If I see any anti racing posts I will carefully explain how whatever the conspiracy theory is wrong and can usually get a response that waters down the AR angle but anyone posting horrible images or videos of injured horses (activist style) will be deleted in a second and blocked. As for those 'beware of this person and this is what they do to dogs/cats/etc I just call them spammy posts since they are always horrible images from the US under the guise of 'please spread the word'. Im yet to work out why people do that when they don't know where the image/story is from and then its there on their wall til the delete it.
