  1. Its no longer an 'every 10 years thing' with the booster shot. Was on a heap of posters back when I had to go in for one after falling over a rock at a horse event (horses carry tetanus in manure so if around horses they say you should get tetanus up to date - same for any dogs around horses). St John and gp were adament break skin get tetanus jab just to be safe within a week of injury breaking skin. However the posters only said 'speak to your gp' in saying that 10 years is no longer the thing and how to find out what was correct. If anything puntures the skin daresay the answer would be as others have said better to be safe than sorry.
  2. One year we had this people letting off very loud and very illegal fireworks close by. Dog went downstairs and staked out the front door (since it vibrated with the loud booms) growling and just not impressed. Wake up next morning to find very grumpy dog who obviously didnt get her sleep overnight - she stayed in that mood all day til she'd had a chance to get proper sleep!
  3. The school near us had a big fireworks display and they did warn us beforehand. Anyway forgot about it til this massive bang then realised but both dogs were likewhat was that. Went out the back and could see them - older dog got narky as they woke her up and were too loud so she was charging around growling and barking - younger went and hid refused to follow us outside woudl come to the door and then it got loud and he disappeared. After I shut the older one inside I stoodout there and watched them myself. Younger one also woke us up at 4am when there was a loud thunderstorm a month or two back as well despite the older one going to watch through the window (or maybe it was quieter away from him making a fuss). He copies her in a lot of things but obviously isnt going to follow the majority when it comes to thunder and fireworks.

  5. Snook is correct. Anyone can take anyone elses photo as long as they are standing on public land. When they do those zoomed in photos in the paper of someone at their front door who doesnt want to have their photo taken they are sitting in the car with a zoom lens (they call them doorknocks or something but its similar to when the TT and ACA crews track people down who dont want to talk to them). You cannot use photos taken in public placesto ridicule someone and you do need permission if it to be used commercially (ie advertising). Editorial use is fine. And animals have no legal rights btw if someone takes their photo without a human it can be used for whatever And if someone asks you to delete a photo you have absolutely no reason to comply with them unless you want to - there is no law that says anyone can be forced to delete a photo they have taken. If someone is taken unreasonable photos (ie creepy and looks like they are up to no good best to report their behaviour to police - not just some random took a pic but obviously they woudl be doing other stuff too). This did come up on the forum before whe someone asked about if a random person could take a photo of their kid at a theme park or something. In this case be upfront if you hav a decent council and say some random woman took a photo of your dog then threatened you that they would report it as a danerous dog even though you explained that the dog was a different breed. Get in first and make sure there is a note somewhere of someone who has nothign better to do that interefere with other people in the neighbourhood.
  6. Yet when cats use someone elses yard as a toilet and the dog gets into that and causes a several hundred dollar vet bill for gastro - who pays? Yes the dog owner not the owner of the roaming cat. They can stay out of our yard and have never stopped our dog from chasing them off after the half eaten baby birds some wandering cat returned to the yard (they were blown out of the nest during the night and were only a week off flying - they were safe in our enclosed yard and the dog was inside (should have left her out with them) and the mother was still around. We go shopping that evening come back and they are gone but the one that was killed outright by the fall still in place. A week later or thereabouts the half eaten hollowed out bodies reappear in the yard (note the original dead one was never touched). Its disgusting what roaming 'oh it would never kill etc its a lovely cat' pets will do outside its owners property. So yes two reasons why people should contain cats that apparently are their much loved pets (I cannot how anyone could leave their cat with access to roam when nasty kids, cars, dogs, etc all could result in no more cat). And in SA unless its changed recently if you catch a cat and it has a collar on you have to let it go again - stupid rule. As are the arguments against registering cats too - should be the same rules as dog ownership.
  7. as Puppy Sniffer said let the cat owner handle the vet bills - their animal trespassed into your yard and sounds like Vic has the same rules as SA in that if your contained animal attacks another that has strayed into its yard the contained animal will not be to blame since it is defending its territory. Its beyond council but state laws.
  8. No problem with an off switch here I'd say a lot of lab owners are the same, even those with working lines. Comes down to training and boundaries. Yet it took this one a week (THATS WEEK) to work out how to use a treat toy. You just have to knock it for it to spit out food (as the older one demostrated the second she went near it). He saw food next to it and pushed it out of the way ate the food and lost interest until with some special lessons and encouragement he slowly worked out how to make food appear. A week! Training and boundaries yes but still takes a while to get through in there.
  9. cafepress was pretty good last time I used them and although i havent added many images for a while I still get a few sales through them (unlike redbubble - waste of time creating a page there)
  10. That makes more sense as there does seems to be plenty OUTSIDE SA just so few here in SA. We were looking for a specific type male, right age, submissive in nature, etc and preferred black but ended up with a yellow one. Just be aware they are a bit thick sometimes as young dogs - we've heard they grow a brain at around 3 or 4 years (our young one every now and again shows glimpses of being smart then he's as thick as a brick again with the ateention span of a gnat!)
  11. Wow you found lots of options? Im in SA and was lookingfor a lab or lab x about 2 years or thereabouts. Absolutely zilch that could be found in SA (since it had to meet our dog). Lab rescue - filled out their form and stillhavent heard back nerly 2 years later. Tried contacting the lab breed society was told basically 'dont know of any so just check the newspaper for ads' at the time. We did eventually find an apparent nearly 2yo lab via pet rescue a few months back (he still acts as if he is younger) but it wasnt an easy task finding an older lab or lab x in Adelaide.
  12. Agree on the idea that before getting a second to make sure the current one is well trained (you'll need the support for the new one til it learns) and indeed over the 'loon' stage (our younger dog is around 2 a lab and perhaps one day he will grow a brain in the meantime I've got my 23kg workout weight when he does the 'loon' thing on walks as forgets he has been learning from the older far wiser one). Also be aware two dogs is so much more work than one especially if they are young dogs with endless energy. You hve to know who is hgher in the peckig order then work out how to throw a treat to one slightly before the other and how to pat them at the same time or if one by one give each the same amount of pats so one doesnt feel left out and try and break the rules. On walks you have to cooridinate how one person can walk two at once (and with a decent sized dog what to do if they start to become too strong for whateverreason. If you take only one somewhere you have to work out how to distract the other so that one doesnt think its missing out. They will also work as a team to remind you its food time or nearly take your knees out at the mere movement of a lead. You have to have two beds and space for said beds as some dogs will not share their own space especially if use to being an only dog. Our two seem to have worked out a share arrangement fo only one spot int eh house in front of the lounge window. When she is there he can sit well back but still see out but if she goes elsewhere he will make himself at home in the prime close to the window spot. Youll also have to find a way to workout who has done 'something' (such as start digging near the roots of a pot plant outside) when both have shown interest inthat dirt and neither has dirty paws.
  13. Sounds like a person - set up a camera to monitor and if you can lock the dog door and put a lock on the manhole cover. Are the dogs in the background other neighbouring dogs? They all seem to be going on much more than usual for barking dogs (even dogs that are barking a fair bit stop every now and again they dont go in a constant stream like that unless thre is a reason).
  14. There is no need to blur anything (if photos are taken in public areas everything is fair game as long as the photos are not ussed to ridicule people. Apparently some car types get paranoid - something about being able to trace an address with a plate BUT then the questionwas asked how would joe public have access to govt records. But it was ppinted out on the work forum if someone wanted to find out who owned the car and where they were located wouldnt they just follow said car home after the car event? Now I blurred the number plates when I took photos of my car that I was selling but that was putting the photos on car ad sites (and seemed the norm) not just to show the car off ad hoc.
  15. Tried contacting them - waiting to hear back what might be around in the local area. But is so much easier to just buy online and the shop I used to use 'itsadogshop.com' and which still has them listed doesnt seem to be trading anymore even though the site is still there. Ruthless leather is a little out of the price rnge for a collar.
  16. Can anyone tell me where it would be possible to buy a leather studded (as in single row) felt lined dog collar. I'm not fussed if its the redwood one or the black one but am trying to find a decent collar for our young dog. All I can find is the horrid material or staffy/greyhound/etc multiple rows studs thick ones or really cheap and nasty looking things (seriously dont people notice that the material ones tend to stink very quickly and are very hard to wash properly whereas leather ones have always lasted for many many many years ie one collar once the dogis an adult). The type Im looking for are the ones below: http://www.beaupets.com.au/products.php?menuid=3 - black leather collar studded and felt lined http://www.beaupets.com.au/products.php?menuid=3 - redwood leather collar studded ad felt lined Would not have though such a normal design would be so hard to find.
  17. People who use them seem to have the big chunky and not to mention very strong breeds and therefore isnt it better to have a device that can control the dog rather than having something like a flat collar which gives no control at all. Any piece of equipment on a dog or horse or whatever if used correctly and for the right reason is better than the wrong thing used to try and keep control. Its bad enough when people dont like choke chains - this when used properly is an effective tool for training in dogs yet for some reason the vocal minority are trying to get peple to reason with dogs (such as time out in the naughty corner- dogs do not comprehend this) instead of using things that have been effective for decades.
  18. Take them out on their own until they are both trained to ignore other dogs, people, bikes, etc and that they know to leave you to step in front of them if approached in what seemed an agressive manner. hanging on for dear life and thinking to yourself 'oh dear god please please come and put your dog on a lead' is not Alpha behaviour so your dogs took the situation into their own hands. dragging 30m just confirms the fact they are not listening to you. You have to learn to correct the dog before they become fixated and then try to do what they like. When we first got the second dog I took him out on his own for the first week or so until he showed he would listen to the choke chain corrections (yes having them in just a harness makes it easy to overpower you if they get their heads down too). Now its easier with one older dog who has learnt how to walk on the leads many years ago as I just put them in a tandem order with her in front and he is in the triangle with her lead across at chest level and she is on one side and im on the other. In recent days he's ignored joggers and bikes (though Im ready to correct him the second the ears stayed pricked before that fixated moment) but still goes nuts at other dogs going past. I will make them stop and sit and let the other dog past as two dogs over 20kg decide to take off Im not going to hold them (however with one being a lot older and allowed off lead during the walk I have the option to drop one lead if I have to as a lsat resort). Now instead of leaping in the air on approach he leaps into the air when they are halfway past - its been 4 weeks abd still got a long way to go but its not about us all being calm its about a young dog listening to me.
  19. Ok Ill put in this opinion just aside from the impulse vs handing over your first born extremes. We were looking for a second dog for ages. The problem with actually going out to the shelters was that there were rarely one that appealed to us online and even then they were only open up to a week later at a time we coudl make it in there (ie they load them up on a Monday updating the page then and we'd only be able to go during say their Sunday opening times). We ended up finding a second dog via Pet Rescue with a group that we pretty much volunteered the relevant information to them (and no we didnt need a yard check but he's only chosen to eat/destroy the same things the older dog did when she was young and digs like the older one did when young, etc etc) - we then met the dog and then our other dog got to meet him before we took him home. Now had he been in a shelter we would never have ended up with him as by the time we could have seen him he would have been gone to a different home but the fact was he was accessible to see and contact them about. A shop like Pet barn would be a lot easier to drop in after work to see the dogs and meet them than trying to get to a short gap on a weekend and the dog is there in front of you to meet. Bit like SA Dog Rescue with their rescue dogs at the Adelaide Royal - you got to meet and see what they were like first hand and the dogs get to interact with you so if you have been looking casually for a dog needing to be rehomed and you know the type you want to be able to see them somewhere is much more motivating to actually do something about adopting one than just a face on a website that you cant do anything about seeing for a week or so (and its not like you can put a hold on them for a week til you can get there as thats unfair all round).
  20. If you are in Queensland - and I think you are and therefore Im surprised it hasnt been mentioned - contact The Paw Man. http://www.thepawman.com.au/ and can also be found on facebook search.
  21. Not pointless - gives the group s putting them up there all those personal details that they can use for mass mailouts, and phone calls in the future. I wont sign the online for anything but legit people if you explain that you will sign and post in a form will email you a form. I remember seeing on that was suppose to be against the government strengthening access to pers details for ASIO of something. Guess what when you clicked on said petition it took your details in a pop up box but never actually seemed all that legit. Yes they were collecting info of people who were aparently worried about the govt accessing the same pers details (note I didnt actually put my details in there)
  22. And thats why they invented Mortein surface spray and dont worry about restricting the number of cans you can buy - so you can fix the prblem before you need to burn down the house Arachnaphobia style
  23. They do need to be aware that Labs are going to be 'puppy brained' until they get to about 3 yrs old. We've just taken in a 2yo and he is as thick as two planks and goes straight into excited puppy mode in a nano second (however someone at work has one a few months younger and its exactly the same). Takes a lot of sticking the that training during the 'teenage' phase! Theyd want to be prepared in having 3 kids under 5 as well as raising a lab!
  24. Lavender girl has put a really good short email to write - if you get too wordy it comes across as preachy but keep it short and friendly and even if one goes hey that person just might be right that s one less. Often think the same thing re putting a price on them when you see the free to good home ads for horses. Free to good home for a horse that can be turned around into a $250 profit for someone who can go and get it and then sell on to the doggers by someone seeing a quick buck.
  25. I looked at the update but there is nothing in there that improves my photography and I have only used it for video once in the 2 years I've owned it. But then I don't use RAW or the jpeg + raw setting.
