  1. I had the perth royal yesterday. Most people werent too bad. We had 2 5month old dobes in their crates asleep, one lady walkd past, saying that they must have been giving sleeping tablets as they were so calm!!
  2. Can someone please point me in the direction of the Obedience trials rules and regulations? I went to Dogswest website and the sanctioned trials only had info for training judges. Thanks
  3. oh yes, she knows the difference between the two! She is out in front for showing, and looks ahead, but for obedience is by my side , watching for her command!
  4. Thanks for your replies ;) Really looking forward to giving this a go!
  5. Ok so I am new to obedience so forgive me if this is a very obvious question! Looking at some trial schedules it says Sudden death if entries exceed 30 What does this mean? If your dog fails an exercise you are excused from the ring then and there and don't get to finish the trial?
  6. thanks for all the encouragement! dishlicker- which breed do you have? Thats a great achievement!
  7. Each activity requires different handling skills to get the best out of the dog. poodlefan- hehe I know! Am getting used to stepping off with left or right foot depending on the situation- also lead work (holding the lead etc)
  8. I am quite involved the in the showring, but having a highly intelligent dog (dobermann) I am keen to give Obedience a try. Have been doing some training with her and she works beautifully for me. Would like to enter a trial soon, I know my dog is capable of all the exercises, just need to work on my footwork/commands etc as she is more likely to fail through handler error than anything else! Has anyone in the showring had a go at obedience? What were your experiences?
  9. Just thought I'd add my bit! I did the ET last year in September at the yangebup location. I had not previously been to Gnangara but I found this location good. A few different surfaces, none of which would were overgrown or muddy at the time. I had a snake slither across the path- saw it before my dog did, so just steadied her to a stop until it had disappeared, and warned the person behind me as well as the stewards. Good course though
  10. thanks for all the replies. Erny- the vet is looking into getting a whole heap of dobes tested at once and sending it over to michigan for thyroid testing.
  11. i prob wasnt clear bout the seabreeze oil. Over the last couple of wks i didnt use it as much, the hairloss started then. So i started using again this week and ive noticed not as much hair loss. No alcohol in seabreeze oil- made from essential plant oils. Its a calming for skin. No itching-scratching-rolling around. Ive had the dogs mostly inside these past couple of wks, he lies on the tiles. Im realy baffled.
  12. Ok so my red male dobe who is 1 shed a lot of hair earlier this week, to the point of minor balding. Its hard to explain, but from a distance you can't really tell, but up close you can see thinning of the hair. It is not all over his body, just mostly behind his shoulders (over the rib cage) and his belly his a bit thin of hair. I took him to the vet yesterday, thinking maybe it was hypothyroidism. He is a bit lethargic, but over in Perth we've had really hot weather, so thats probably contributing. He is not overweight, nor does he lie in the sun to try and stay warm. I asked the vet about running a T4 blood test to test his thyroid, she did not recommend it all, saying that T4 isn't always accurate- dog could by hypothyroid but you could get a normal reading. (Which I already knew) She proceeded to do a skin scrape for demodex (Seen demodex before and this doesn't look like it) and it came up negative. Her conclusion was, he has crappy dry skin, and to do some research on the internet for remedies. He is fed a raw diet, and gets omega 3/6 etc. I use seabreeze oil on his coat, which helps with the drying out. Any idea of what I can do? Anyone else had this situation before? I have looked after several red dobes before and none have dropped so much coat to the point of balding.
  13. Hey all, Sorry I cannot find anywhere in the CCD/CD rules (ANKC) but do you need to have your dog measured to enter a trial? I know there is no jumps so there is no need for their height. Just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing when I enter! Thanks
  14. I"m in WA. I know that there is tracking training up at Gnangara (correct me if I'm wrong)- this is a good hour from my house on a Saturday morning.....
  15. I am also interested in tracking. What is the difference between IPO and ANKC? I think my girl will be brilliant at tracking- but I am curious as to how a trial works? Basically my understanding is a track is layed and the dog has to find the article, and the either drop/pause? Is this right? What happens next? Any articles would be great- checked out CAWA website and all i could find was info for training judges. Just want to know the rules etc! I clicked on the link that speedy2 posted about Dennis Helms- but page is no longer there.
  16. Hey this is a bit late in replying, but congrats to all those who passed their ET!! WA has ours in 2wks.....cant wait to do it.
  17. Where can I buy a hydrobath in WA ? secondhand or new? Does anyone have experiences with buying a 2nd hydro?
  18. I have been training my dobe and it is a lot easier than I thought it would be! (the bike riding with the dog etc) Should be a fun day
  19. Just wondering who is going to do the ET in September? I sent my entry off the other day Also has anyone been to the new venue?
  20. k9force- I checked out your website but couldn't seem to find anything on the containment systems....could you point me in the right direction!
  21. thanks for your comments guys. I have a dobe who gets out of the tiniest spaces-she's moved pot plants, poles, sleepers, pavers etc. and she got to next door the other week.....neighbours rang the ranger and I got a warning but next time won't be so leninet (spelling?) so basically I need something that will really keep her in!! Her grandmother is a hudini as well....lol
  22. hi all I did a search on this but couldn't find much....basically I'm interested in the opinions/thoughts of those that have used the electronic containment systems. Do they work? Are they worth the money? and any other comments. thanks :p
