I don't know what the prices are for them but I do think pulis would be a good option. I've met a few and they've all been lovely chilled out little dogs, bit bigger than a mini poodle but smaller than a wheaten. Nothing that says you have to have their coat corded if you don't want to of course, they could be clipped shorter as wit any other groomed breed

Surely it would make more sense for them to stay at the pound until close to their PTS day and then go to rescue if not adopted from pound. -
I'm not sure I'd be that big a fan of a wheaten. They are very stubborn and it's pretty well considered normal for them to jump up on you. My kids are dog savvy and even my nearly ten year old found the one he was doing some show training with to be rather overwhelming.

I'v never met a puli I didn't like(and I've actually been lucky enough to meet a few!)

Is there a specific person here who usually keeps an eye on the happenings at Hawkesbury? I could email the pound myself but given I'm not currently associated with a specific rescue that might be more confusing than worthwhile. -

I was surprised to see that very few of the Sydney pounds do a reduced rate for very old dogs? Everywhere I have lived has had a greatly reduced cost to try to encourage people to take on the very old ones, especially given they usually have more ongoing costs too so they are less 'desirable' for a few reasons. -

It's not a very active group but I have posted this information on the Aus basset facebook page in case someone there is able to help -

LOL I adore my silly old biddy of a 10 year old. 5 years is so young though! My current basset is 5 years old and most people peg her as 2-3! -
I have seen the sloped ones on ebay too but it was a while ago

I'm sure i could convince my husband to have him here at the very least as a foster. I'd love to say he could stay till the end of his days but couldn't guarantee anything until i knew how well he got along with my girls so I'd prefer to foster him under someone's umbrella and if it worked out I could talk adoption with them but if not then he'd be in the proper rescue system to find a suitable home. Whatever happens please keep me as back up. So few come through rescue and I'm not willing to let any slip through the cracks if I can help it! -

I have found them to be very helpful when i have spoken to the secretary. Realistically he's only probably got another year or two at he most so it's a hard age to put him in the pound at If you can get a chip number for him the basset club secretary has had ANKC records checked for me to try to source the breeder of that other basset looking for rehome not long ago so might be worth seeing if you can get a chip number to her. -

Wildthing can maybe give you an idea of what is going on at Queanbeyen. I think they've been trapping a fair few suburban wilds over there at the moment so I guess in that case at 9 weeks they are still at an age where there is a reasonable chance of taming them but if they are semi-feral at 6 months it's going to be a lot harder. I'm not sure if the girl I took is one of the nearly six months olds you were referring to but she was pretty flighty when she first arrived, still flinches now if you move too fast around her and i can imagine would have presented very poorly in a pound environment. I don't mind giving her time to settle but when there are so many cats needing help and very few places I guess it makes sense to take the ones that are going to be easiest to move quickly so that you can reopen spaces for other needy cats. -
I think it would fit :)y

Kill List Frustrations

Previous people made statements regarding people taking on dogs when they weren't suited to the home because they couldn't provide the care or rehabilitation that the dog requied, but because they had allowed themselves to be sucked in but desperate stories. That's what i was responding to. Of course people get dogs from pounds every day of the week. I'm having a little trouble following your meaning, it feels like you are simply taking my statement in relation to the original post without any regard for any of the other posts in the thead? -

Exactly, and that's why I said this: Believe it or not I was actually agreeing with you but simply stating that SOME people may have the ability to take on an animal that needed more work. -

As I said Nic.B I was talking about MYSELF. Not that I would take animals and put them with owners not set up to handle them. I HAVE taken animals on PTS lists that needed lots of work, put the work in to them and still own them to this day. I wouldn't take an animal that I felt was above my ability to properly rehabilitate. I have had animals that have taken years to rehabilitate or which spent their whole lives requiring some level of support. Quite frankly I think you have completely misread and taken out of context my statement because your statements added to it actually make no sense at all with regard to what I was saying. -
If you are planning on looking at an SUV I would seriously consider an Outlander. Ours is now well over 200,000km and is still running really well. We take it off road, up to the snow and do lots of long drives with it. It has a seriously good turning circle and is so easy to park. Plus the back seats are proper adult sized back seats that are actually comfortable to sit in.
-
Airedaler I think you would just need to check that there was space for the top edge(unless it was a soft crate that would bend a teeny bit). I put my crate in and based on the length of my crate plus the extra space to the tailgate there was 91cm. So it's a bit borderline for me to tell you definitively whether it would work. Is it a wire crate or a soft crate? If we have one at work on monday and I know what sort of crate you are planning to use I can put one in and see whether it works.
-
I think there's a reasonable chance you could fit a 90cm crate in the boot. I can throw my crate in tomorrow and see, it's about 83cm so i can see if there would be enough space left for a longer one. I fit a massive one in sideways but it's hard to get the dog in then LOL
-
I think the new rav4 is similiar in size to the outlander. We tie our luggage up against one side of the boot and the dogs hop in the other side(basset hound and kelpie) and then three kids in the back. I'm always amazed how much I can fit in it!

I don't have an issue with people taking on an animal on 'death row' as long as they are actually set up to handle that animal and willing to put in the effort needed. I have taken on plenty of animals this way but I know I am willing and able to put in the work they need. The way i see it if a rescue would have scrounged around and found a spot for that animal, then put in 3-4 months worth of work vetting and rehabing it before having to put more work in to rehoming it then having someone take the animal on who is willing to put in that effort themselves saves the rescue groups time and money and allows them to focus on other animals in need. Of course this statement doesn't apply to those who just take them in a whim without regard for the reality that comes with that animal and i definitely don't agree with groups who advertise them in the hopes of suckering someone with a sad face and a sob story. -
We have an Outlander and it has awesome boot space and a drop down back tailgate which is great for the dogs getting in and out

Neighbours Large Dog Can Get Into My Yard If It Wants
kelpiecuddles replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
CavnRott I get the impression that they are courtyards/small yards with fences between and a large rock wall at the back. I am sure that for most dogs a large rock wall would be more than adequate to keep them contained, clearly not the case with this dog. No different really to the clever staffy that can scale the 6 foot fence despite it being a perfectly good fence. ;) In this case it would seem that the new neighbour has failed to adequately assess the fence in relation to THEIR dog, not the other way around. -

I think the best bet is to get someone to drive a couple of star pickets in to the garden bed up the top there and attach some wire to it and extand it at least a little way across the top of the timber fence. It's a shame you aren't near me as it's about a ten minute job for someone with a star picket driver and I would have happily done it for you. The materials would set you back about $40, could you maybe see if she has a partner/son/friend who is up to the job and go halves in the cost?
