Thanks so much for the replies! I've ordered some protexin for the pups, although the poo hasn't reappeared again and we've only got another couple of days left on the antibiotics for the mum. Fingers crossed that's the last of the poo!

This is my first time posting in the breeders section so please be nice. My bitch is on antibiotics (she had a nasty fever a few days ago and the vet doesn't want to take chances that it is anything more serious) and now my 16 day old pups have been getting random bouts of a very yellow runny diarreah type poo. The vet said if they get it quite bad to supplement but not to worry too much if it's not bad. However it's incredibly messy and I'd love to know if there is anything I can do to stop the runny poos or how I can best keep the puppies cleaner? We've had 2 bouts of this poo and both times I've had to pretty much wash all the puppies even though it only seems to be one puppy (different ones each occasion) that are getting the poo! This is my first litter so I'm new to all this!

Australian Obedience Team At Crufts 2012?
Seita replied to Lablover's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I was just looking at the UK obedience website and I see three of the Aussie dogs listed, does anyone know why Lisa & Prix are not on the list? -

Congratulations I have a photo just like that of my up and coming prospect too! LOL Good luck with yours! I'm keeping a girl too :-) -

You shouldn't call yourself names like that Kath!!! :nahnah:

Well I have no idea really, I may not even make it into the ring next year LOL For Ella: - hopefully a litter of lovely promising pups for me to pick one out of - hopefully some trials towards the end of the year in both Open and UD with consistently good scores - continue improving in her agility training who knows we may even see the inside of an agility ring? - health and happiness in all I ask her to do! - I would love a 200 or two (or three or lots) but that will depend on whether we actually make it to any trials which depends on when and how the litter goes!
-
Don't you just love rental dogs! I would love to steal my mum's pup too! He's a pound puppy who's now 18 months old and would be a superstar in obedience if I could steal him but unfortunately they live in VIC and Mum won't part with him! LOL

Thanks, Seita, this is something worth thinking about because in the trial on Friday night she stopped to scratch at it again mid heelwork, and at the start post  Oh and it was a different collar to her training collar. I just don't think she likes collars on!! no worries :-) if she's not used to wearing collars in everyday life then it's little wonder that she scratches at them. Thankfully I don't get this problem with Ella even though she also never wears a collar outside of training. You could always put a collar on her more regularly to get her used to it so it doesn't bother her. Just a thought, how tight is your collar on her? Maybe if you put a small lightweight one on really loosely it won't annoy her or she won't notice it? Who would have thought that you'd have to train your dog to put up with wearing a collar! LOL

Circle work, both directions with a post in the middle with rewards for correct position. Or something I did with a past dog was just before you come back around the post into the figure of eight (where Strauss loses the plot) move into fast pace and run out of the Fo* and reward for catching up with you. Just looking at your video he starts to yawn part way through that Fo8 which might mean there's some stress there, perhaps go back a couple of steps and reward heavily for the basics in the 8. His other heelwork is lovely so it shouldn't be hard to fix.
-
Just a thought RS if your dogs scratch at collars or they get covered in hair etc why don't you get a different collar? Something small and lightweight that won't irritate your dogs or make you want to touch it. :-) I have absolutely no sentiments about collars and don't really think there's a reason to wear them but there isn't really a reason not to either. I sort of understand the saftey argument for agility. But to be honest, collars should be snug so the chances of one getting caught on equiptment would be fairly minimal. As for working a dog between exercises, I often pop my dog into a drop or sit stay and step a few paces away and leave her there. That way she doesn't need to be at attention but is still working to some extent.

Any and All. To be honest if I never get there it's not going to upset me but I want consistency and more reliability from Ella which is my main goal for "project 200". If I end up with a 200 out of it then I'll be a happy camper. I will eventually go to UDX but my plans for next year are to play in Open and UD for a bit, maybe take a stab at taking out one of the top dog awards for QLD. I might incorporate a bit of UDX into my retraining of things for other levels like the seekback for example. I've already got a positions in motion and a change of position so I'm part way there!

Ptolomy - my Kirra is one of those - I didn't latch her crate door properly the other week - came back to find her sitting happily in the driver's seat, having gone through the car with the efficiency of an over-enthusiastic customs officer . Yes I have a houdini too, at the QLD state/national trials earlier this year I didn't zip Ella's soft crate up properly and she got herself out and spent probably the better part of half an hour chilling out near my gazebo unrestrained. Everyone thought she was either doing a long stay or was tethered somehow, it wasn't til she decided to go visiting and anyone realised she was loose!
-
It's amazing what happens when you go away for 6 weeks and your dog gets no training. Ella has been nuts and sooo keen to work in every training session I've done with her in the last 2 weeks. I think she missed doing some work!
-
I think 3 dogs will be my limit unless I win lotto and can stop working! My plans are to have a 5 to 6 year age gap between my guys, I've only got Ella at the moment and she's 5.5 now and I hope to breed a litter from her in January and keep a pup to compete with who in turn I'll breed when it gets to around 5 or so and which point Ella will be nearing retirement and I'll have time to focus on a puppy again. Personally I think I'd struggle with having more than 2 dogs in active training. I wish I could be superhuman like Ptolomy and have soo many dogs doing so well but I think I'd go mad if I tried or divorced or both! LOL

Asked To Leave The Field For Prong Collar Use
Seita replied to davidthedogman's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Isn't that quite dishonest? It would never get through at the club I go to. They vet every dog before training starts to make sure your equipment is on right and the dog appears healthy. I didn't say that I would do it Isn't that quite dishonest? It would never get through at the club I go to. They vet every dog before training starts to make sure your equipment is on right and the dog appears healthy. Fascinating... never had a judge do that in QLD and I've only encountered one person at a trial in QLD who had a prong on and she didn't know it wasn't allowed and removed it the moment I mentioned it to her. I won't let a judge touch my dog before a trial, it would send Ella haywire! -

I can't help but comment on this! Their main training methods are check and drag... sorry but they are breaking their own rules! EVACUATE EVACUATE! Seriously, I know this club, I know who runs it and if I were you I wouldn't go back. You can't argue or debate with people like this and you won't be able to change their minds. There is a rule somewhere, it was printed in the CCC(Q) magazine a year or 2 ago but it's not published on their website from what I've seen. I have yet to encounter a club that is affiliated with the ANKC who will allow you to use a prong. Alternatively I guess you could always hide the prong with a bandana or one of those prong covers so it's not obvious... otherwise if you're not actually working in the class just use the local dog parks and work on the outside untill your dog can cope with being inside the park. -
I'm a bit the same... one of these days I'll rock up at a trial without a leash because I just never use them! LOL

Scent Discrimination Snatch And Grab!
Seita replied to Seita's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Can't say how it's going as I haven't trained it in almost a month now! She got her OC title at the end of July and she had some mouthing of the articles at that trial and I haven't done them since as I've given her a holiday from obedience until Mid October (when I get back from holidays)! I'll be doing plenty of proofing and fixing once we're back in training before we head back into the ring! I don't want to see snatching and grabbing or uncertainty over an article ever again in the trial ring with her! LOL -
Thanks for the congrats guys, And yes Nic for a girl who gets very car sick she does seem to be able to get it togethor when we travel. My friend pointed out to me the other day that she has managed to get quallies in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra and now Rocky. Two more trials in the next two weeks - Redcliffe and Toowoomba. Fingers crossed she manages one more for me before we go. When are you leaving must be very soon? Well given her track record, Toowoomba might be it! LOL Maybe you need to detour and add another hours drive to your trip up there! :-) I'm leaving in 9 days so yes definitely getting close now! And my little brag is that I might actually make an agility dog out of Ella! We've almost almost almost got 4 weave poles in a straight line and she's starting to look like a dog who can weave! :D
-
Sensational stuff Kath!!!! Looks like Coco preffers to do well at the trials that you need to travel to! Do you have any more trials coming up before you go on holidays???
-
Well I didn't breed a litter and I've got the OC so she's on holidays now until I do breed the litter! LOL

Sorry I'm a newby, I'm not completely sure what that is? I've done sort of luring with food in circles on both sides but I'm not sure she actually understands what I'm trying to teach her as she's soo focussed on the food! Hey, Circle work is (basically to begin with) a fancy name for heel work that is done in a 10m (or so) circle. As the dog gets more and more proficient you can add complexity and do the work with her on tboth the inside and outside of the circle. Really though as others have said it is about building as much value for RHS as for LHS. Both CK and Xena have reasonable heelwork (for dogs that don't trial) and work similarly on both sides, but don't get confused. The number 1 rule is that they are not allowed to cross behind me. I think with the 2 x 2's what you are describiing suggests that the performance is not independent of you - if it was it wouldn't matter whether she was on your left and right. Give me a shout next time you are at training and we can have a look at it off to the side. Cheers T Thanks for that! I'll play around with that a bit more and see if that helps. I'm attempting to get at least 4 poles in a straight line before the end of the month as I've got nothing to train at the moment and I'm on holidays all of sept and part of oct so thought this might be fun to teach in the mean time. It also means that I won't be back at training until late oct/nov so if I'm still having probs then I'll come and find you! LOL sorry forgot to multiquote but thanks Ness for the suggestion, someone has just loaned me that dvd so I'll try find time to have a look at it soon!

I'm just starting to dabble into agility with my (very) obedience trained dog (aka a dog who has only ever worked on and been rewarded from my left) and am looking for some ideas on how I can get her to be more comfortable on my right hand side? We're doing 2x2 in the backyard at the moment and it took ages to get her to go through 2 poles from all angles and directions from both sides but we got there but now that I've added another 2 poles she's gone back to having trouble doing anything from my right side again! Are there any good games or little exercises that I can do to get her to want to be on my right a bit more? Thanks!
