I guess it depends on the aussie as I have had 2 and nether would do well with a small section. All the walking in the world isn't a substitute for the hours of romping, wrestling and charging round they do together. I would also hesitate to leave them unsupervised with a smaller breed. Not because they mean any harm but they are a very physical breed and mine at least don't seem to have an awareness of the impact they make when they bowl or jump on my 8kg shelties. Given Reeve is 26kgs that is a big weight difference.

Shelties are a vocal breed but most live happily in town without too much issue, training is the key in most cases. It would really depend how the section is situated. If there are people constantly walking the fence line this could be more of an issue as a sheltie will bark at strangers. They would also be more suited to a dog door inside as that helps to minimise barking. The section size wouldn't be an issue as long as the dog was adequately exercised. They are a working breed and are extremely quick and easy to train.

Small Dog With Chronic Colitis
cowanbree replied to Her Majesty Dogmad's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have a dog with this and in my experience it has to managed rather than cured. He lives on a very bland diet and when he has a bout I have drops from a homeopath that work brilliantly and settle things down very quickly. I didn't find conventional vet treatment helped at all, in fact I was advised to have him pts -
Every single vet I have ever had a vaccination done with has checked the heart prior to vaccinating and this puppy will have had at least 2 if not 3 vacs so it seems unlikely but of course not impossible that it had a heart murmur from birth esp a serious one. Heart murmurs can occur due to a virus or other illness, I have just had a 3yr old girl get it via a case of kennel cough. Difficult to blame that on the breeder.

Unsure What Is Wrong With My Girl.
cowanbree replied to BC Crazy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Can I ask what the wash is? Revolution is the spot on of choice for mites at the moment and is collie safe despite being a mextin product -
The family that were adamant they didn't need fences as their dogs were very well trained and were never outside by themselves. When asked what happened to their previous dog she told me she got run over. Apparently not her fault but the fault of the people who had tossed KFC wrappers into the middle of the road. When I pointed out that the dog must have been wandering off the property to see the wrappers she hung up on me.

The poster has already indicated that the puppy has been returned and the breeder is getting a second vets opinion

That's easier said than done unless you take out the new owner's emotional investment. ETA: What would the breeder be likely to do with a pup with those problems that the owner would not do? Given that this dog has been sold on the main register I would assume this is a show dog in a show home which complicates matters. If it was a pet home I would most likely offer to let them keep the puppy but only if I felt they would do what was in the dogs best interests no matter what that was. It is my right to ask for the dog back before refunding anything. I have had a pet puppy diagnosed with bad hips. In my case the dog was grossly overweight and had been allowed to race up and down stairs from a very young age. I did give them another puppy but if I was being honest I seriously considered not as there was no history of it and the parents were hips scored. I felt it was at least in part due to owners negligence. Interestingly enough the later dog died of a brain tumour at the age of 9yrs and they said we have checked with the vet and they don't think it is hereditary. I am not God here, all I can do is health test and everything else is out of my control.

If I was the breeder after a second opinion at a vet of my choice I would want the puppy returned and you would receive a full refund of purchase price but it is complicated especially in giant breeds as OCD is environmental, diet and exercise related also, hereditary is only one factor.

In a multiple dog house if the OH expressed an interest in another breed I would be encouraging it as long as he was going to be actively involved in its care and it would fit into the household. After all each breed is very different and they don't suit everyone. I am a working dog person, I love that they want to be with and please me and I can't imagine life with the likes of a sighthound that is quite independent and likely to do what suits them rather than what you ask. Different story if it is a single dog household, then I belive there has to be agreement

Leaving An Old Dog To Go On Holidays
cowanbree replied to wagsalot's topic in General Dog Discussion
I leave mine at home and get a dog sitter in to stay but even then there are some limitations to that. I ahev a special needs boy who currently comes with me but is 11yrs so I can see very shortly my travelling will be very limited for a while -
For me the entire point of staying with my pet is so that they are comfortable. Allowing the vet to take the dog out the back to insert a catheter totally defeats that and while it may be more pleasant for me it isn't for my pet as they are now having this procedure done with strangers. As hard as it is it is my job to be calm and comfort my pet and that is the most important thing.

I recently lost one of my dogs and for the first time ever had a similar issue with her best friend and playmate Reeve. Reeve wouldn't eat and wouldn't come inside. He was lying outside in the pouring rain all day and night. It was horrible so I know exactly how you are feeling. I would do a vet visit and rule out an issues and then consider an appetite stimulant such as Techtronic which has helped me immensely. I also made a real effort to get Reeve out and about. We have started doing Rally O beginners classes and after about a mth reeve started to improve. 6 weeks on he isn't really back to his normal self, he still looks very sad but he is a lot better. I personally didn't want to rush out and get another puppy because not only was I not ready and it wouldn't have been fair to the puppy but also there was no guarantee Reeve would bond with the new puppy.

Foster Bc Showing Aggression To All Our Animals
cowanbree replied to Inspired1's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
It really is too early to tell is it is true aggression or if she is just scared out of her wits. Slow everything down and let her get comfortable before trying to introduce her to anyone. I personally wouldn't have even introduced her to any of your other animals yet, she needs to bond with you first. You have to remember you are strangers to her. Not many adult dogs will fit in seamlessly, I always say it takes 6-8 weeks to see the true dog. -
Revolution does ear mites but do all the pets in the house or they will reinfect each other

Cowan had a partial blockage that didn't show up on any x-rays, scans or with using the barium balls. His wasn't sudden though because it was only a partial it took 6 weeks before we went from my dog isn't well to throwing up constantly. It was a long 6mth recovery with a lot of issues along the way but he is sitting at my feet today

Very true. As a sheltie breeder my favourite colour is the black tri but they are extremely difficult to sell in comparison to sables or blues. I don't really understand why, I think they are gorgeous

Sarcopotic Mites And Treatment With Revolution
cowanbree replied to cowanbree's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
After applying the revolution was he extremely itchy for 24hrs? Over and above what he was prior to that? Could the extra itchiness be because the Revolution is working and it is agitating the mites causing more itchies? Does that make sense? That was my orginal theory but now that I am thinking they don't have mites I am wondering if the chemical overload is just aggravating their skin -

One of mine was dog aggressive on lead and when meeting new dogs. Did a lot of work to try and fix it but in the end we just managed it. She was fear aggressive and wasn't that good with strange males either.

Chronic Unknown Skin Condition - Desperate
cowanbree replied to pixandpug's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Put a head collar on to stop nibbling, socks on his feet and bath him in Calendula tea, really is magic stuff. I take it he is still on antibotics and pred? -
Cowan was on Carafate on an empty stomach to line it and losec to reduce stomach acid. I doubt the Carafate would do any harm to the pups but the losec might. He was also fasted for 72hrs, not something I would do to an inwhelp bitch. He very nearly died and is only alive today because I took him on a 16hr round trip to get to the right vet. Is it possible to put her on the plane?
-
It could still be a partial obscuration, a tear somewhere or an ulcer. I would go straight to the specialist and get the camera that they put down her throat done. They can then get a really good look right down the throat, stomach and bowel and you will know exactly what is wrong. Bright red blood indicates fresh bleeding and I would be taking it very seriously

Sarcopotic Mites And Treatment With Revolution

I have considered that but the last mth has been too cold for them and the dogs are still itching
