  1. Ohhh, back then he might have. I don't remember, at that stage I'd only had a prong for maybe a week from memory so I might not have had him fully trained. Now though he'd probably walk on a flat collar fine - I've never tried. I might try it just to see. Will have to get a flat collar though.

I guess I don't have that issue, I won't leave my dog with friends anymore - if I go somewhere he either stays with Mum or he will go into a boarding kennel.

  2. I'd never walk my dog on anything other than a prong collar. My dog does not pull on lead with one, but will when using a conventional collar which can cause spinal injuries.

Interesting comment. Everything I've read from "experts" points to the prong collar as being a training tool.....a means to an end. A useful tool to train the dog to walk on a loose leash. The same way I used a head halter........the dog doesn't pull, praise him and use positive reinforcement for walking on a loose leash, then gradually reintroduce a flat collar or a chain and eventually ditch the training tool.

This comment tells me there's no training going on here......the prong collar is a permanant solution to the problem.

    It is a training tool.

But I use it on all walks in case he does need a correction.

If I don't have it on him and he does something wrong, I can't correct him... can I? If it's on him and he does nothing wrong then it'll never need to be used.

BTW, I don't even own a flat collar. I only own a prong for Gizmo... Why do I want him walking on a flat collar? I take the prong with me everywhere just like any one else takes their flat collar everywhere.

  3. BAHAHAHA

    DUCKS YOU NEED HELP

DUCKS YOU NEED HELP PUTTING A COLLAR AROUND A DOG WITH SPIKES PUT IT AROUND YOUR NECK AND SEE HOW YOU WOULD FEEL.NO WONDER PEOPLE ON HERE WERE TALKING ABOUT YOU I THINK YOU NEED A GOOD KICKING AND DRAGED WITH THE COLLAR

    Sorry. That made me laugh.

As I said in the pm 4paws, sorry for being slow. Oztion and Ebay haven't been letting me login - nfi why, only got back on last night (I wasn't even aware it had sold.)

  4. How would you respond to these questions: (my response is under each question)

    legalities

Were you aware the use of this type of collar is illegal in some places and banned from use in many others?

I am aware this collar is illegal to use in Victoria, but not illegal to own.

    I won't sell it to a Victorian.

    (I really would though.)

    collar

THIS COLLAR SHOULD BE PUT ROUND YOUR NECK NOT A DOG OR MAYBE YOU ARE A DOG

I wouldn't use this collar if it caused harm.

The prong collar causes less harm than most other conventional training aids.

A prong collar works by pinching the skin around the neck, the tips are blunt. The dog is taught not to pull it and the corrections are short and sharp.

I suggest you do some reading on studies that have been published in reputable journals on the harmful effects of other collars (head haltis, flats) vrs prongs.

I'd never walk my dog on anything other than a prong collar. My dog does not pull on lead with one, but will when using a conventional collar which can cause spinal injuries.

Would you prefer I subject my dog to long term health issues or short term pain?

Now go back to owning your ducks or whatever it is you own, you clearly have no experience using prong collars.

    re collar

why are you selling this when it can harm an animal?

Conventional flat collars are more likely to harm an animal.

Blame the idiot who abuses the tool, don't blame the tool. I certainly don't want knives banned because some people use them as weapons - that is unreasonable.

    dog collar

    Hi

Did you know you a selling an item that is illegal to sell in AUSTRALIA...this is a cruel and dangerous method of so called training, and 1 for 1 cant believe you even have a bid...

Did you know this item is 100% legal to sell in all Australian states except Victoria?

Can you please point me to some peer reviewed studies on the dangers of training with a prong collar as I can certainly point you to some on the dangers of using these so called "safe" methods - head haltis? Please, give me a break.

Whats the best way to answer these complaints? Ignore them or attempt to educate?

  5. Okay.

The door is now blocked off so he doesn't scratch, he is whining again.

BUUUUUUUUUT he has taken to shitting on my table. When I am not in here he will climb on my table and take a dump! He'll also piss on the floor near my bed.

I've had to lock him outside now as I really can't be bothered cleaning up piss and poo every time I leave the room.

Could these two things be related?

  6. In my not so expert opinion it is the first, he expects to be let in. This is because when my sister is home I have to shut up so I end up letting him in. I just found out she is staying at her boyfriends for 2 weeks so that gives me a little bit of time to work with

Just before I did a little experiment. I put the base of my bed standing up across the hallway entrance so he couldn't get to the door. He whined for maybe 1-2 minutes then stopped. I stayed out there for 40 minutes and came back and he was just snoozing on my bed.

I could put a gate up if this works, but imo that is only really band aiding the situation and not actually fixing the undesirable behavior?

  7. I used to ignore it and it was getting better but my sister is home more again so I need it fixed.

I can't ignore him anymore, my sister works late night (gets home at 4am most mornings) and if I leave this half of the house then Gizmo whines non-stop. He isn't allowed in the other half and I go in there to use the big PC and to cook and such.

One idea I was tossing around was perhaps getting a baby gate so that he can see in there but not entirely sure if that will work so just wanted some backup options.

I've been working on leadership a ton now and I THINK I am on top still. Since my last issue (food growling) I've had no troubles since I stepped it up a notch and he hasn't appeared to challenge me at all. He is still on my bed though till I put my room back together then I think I might be banishing him to a crate at night time. I don't acknowledge him when I leave the room or when I come back till he has settled down.

Also not sure if its relevant but we've been doing that Triangle of Temptation thing and its going really well. He won't look away from me! On walks and such if we stop and he is in a sit he is looking at me immediately waiting for the next command.

Another issue is when anyone other than me attempts to leave this side of the house he'll try to barge past them and they cant keep him in here without help as he'll put his muzzle in the door and be a pain. Could this be pack issues? He does it to mum and I am fairly certain Mum is above him. I used to keep a watergun at the door so people could just spray him when he does it and he backs off but is there a more permanent solution as if I forget to leave the watergun there then whoever is leaving has a 10 minute mission.

So, any ideas on what I can try that won't keep my sister awake for hours on end? He'll whine for up to 3 hours or so (usually 1-2hrs tho) then if anyone comes in he'll start again when they leave.

  8. With the large are the spikey things still the same distance apart as the small?

Mum wants to get one and it'd be great if we could use the same one on Gizmo and the Cats (and she is also looking at getting a cav.)

(She actually reads DOL now, she read about them on here.)

  9. I'll have to try apple cider, I've got a bottle of it but to use it I have to ensure his bowl is the ONLY water source there. If I leave the toilet door open he will open the lid to drink it.

Can I add some apple cider vinegar to the wash to help out? I am going to wash all of his bedding, all of my bedding and hopefully set off a flea bomb in the next few days.

I'll also be trying the natural method with all those oils but it'll take me time to source everything.

  10. Heya,

I think that my leadership does need work - I've been a bit soft on him so he is starting to get a bit pushy.

He will get off the bed if I tell him to, well, all I have to do is look at him when he is off it and he'll scuttle off onto his bed. His bed is one of those metal frame with material over it things though he doesn't really sleep on it, its main use seems to be for his bones. He will also get on it if I invite him, but up untill now he has been allowed on it whenever which I think I need to change so that he is ONLY allowed on it invited.

I'd do some of the basic leadership training that I've read on (things like walking through the door first) and perhaps try what Tony suggested if he seems to be improving, if not, I'll wait till I see the trainer.

Ohhh, what methods can I implement to limit separation anxiety? He doesn't have it but Axle did and I can see the same behaviour brewing in Gizmo so I guess it was entirely my fault in Axle so want to avoid it in Gizmo. Right now I just ignore him when I leave and come home but is there anything else I should be doing?

    Thanks!

  11. I just took a bone off Gizmo as he sat on my bed with it and he has been trained that my bed = no bones (and he generally sits on his bed to eat them) so I went over to remove the bone.

He was growling at me! I still took it as I didn't think he'd bite and he didn't but what should I do in the future if he does this? This is the second time he has done it since he came to me around a month - two months ago.

Is it safe to remove a bone if he is growling? How can I discourage this behaviour? So far the only training I've been doing is that Triangle of Temptation stuff with his dinner and he is going very well with that.

What other methods can I use to curb this behavior. I can't leave Gizmo with my mum to go away for the weekend or so with him acting like this as it will scare her.

ETA: I do intend to see a trainer local to me (I forgot her name, Steve recommended her to Huski and Huski recommended her to me) but can't afford it just yet (maybe a month and a half away.)

  12. Cavandra, I'll try that as I love using natural methods over chemicals. I also have the equipment to extract my own essential oil so can make some of it myself! I use a herbal method for worm control but never considered it for fleas!

Onslowsmum, does Advantix cover ticks as well? If so I think I remember trying it on Axle before he went missing and our fleas just kept on coming. I tried quite a few spot on treatments and nothing worked except the permoxin. The cats are doing fine though but they are the ones who spread the fleas into my part of the house.

I'll get some flea bombs when I go out next and do the house
