  1. Tilly, is that a council thing or state thing re the containment of them? I might have to check with the council. Our place is 6ft chain link but it's pretty simply to add a few extra feet of wooden fencing on the top if I need it to be intruder proof.
  2. Jeff, the security instructor or the dog guy? Will PM those two. I think I will use one of their dogs for the course. I am just trying to find the local laws here for how I have to contain a trained dog. Bloody hard to find this info. Anyone know anything about these guys: http://www.k9centre.com/index.html I would consider traveling but if I need regular lessons and such then it will get pricey making the drive and such.
  3. I'd prefer to own the dog myself But if I can't, well, then I can't. I have no idea what ABC is. We don't have to be licensed for dogs in QLD yet but next year will. I am doing the normal cert 2 in security to get my license then doing the weapons (baton, pistol, cuffs, knife - not sure of knife) and then there is a 5 day course in wide bay that covers dog handling. The dog handling course in wide bay is designed so that if you do it then when the K9 licensing is bought in you are able to get it: http://www.widebay.tafe.qld.gov.au/resourc...ompetencies.pdf It's only $500 or so, I don't know how useful it will be but I might as well do it.
  4. Heya, In todays lesson (for security) I was drilling the teacher guy about dog handling in the security industry. He knew a bit and said my best bet is to do the short 5 day course at wide bay then seek out a dog and get a few lessons myself with the dog then try and get a job as a handler and the company should fund the rest of the training. Is this how it works? He admitted he didn't know much about it but said he has seen it done this way before? If so, who would I be looking at up here on the coast? I need as much training as the dog does... The first aid instructor is actually a dog handler and trains protection dogs but I don't like him as he wouldn't answer any of my questions. Cheers, Michael.
  5. I also hope you are joking and I know nothing about this type of training. I want a dog trained for security (obviously for security purposes) but one of the first things everyone tells me is that training the handler is just as important as training the dog. You're going to end up killing your dog.
  6. Axle is scared of jumping. The only time he jumps is chasing the cat over the couch.
  7. I got to listen to the last 15 minutes or so (even if my head was somewhere else) but I had nfi what everyone was talking about Anyway, this post was just to say Steve isn't scary. ps - sorry about my mobile ringing. I meant to put it on vibrate as I couldn't turn it off but forgot.
  8. Even if the dog was focused and wouldn't go for your dog it still sounds logical to remove other dogs from the scenario if possible.
  9. I'd go further than dog proofing the chook yard, completely separate the dogs and chooks.
  10. I wrote neem instead of cloves. As far as I can tell Lemon Oil, Vit E and Jojoba Oil don't do anything for the worms. Didn't look at green walnut or water. Neem is a worm resistant wood. Do you use it? What do you think of it?
  11. Ahh yep. Thats the stuff I saw. Now I need to decide whether buying the herbs and blending it into the barf is cheaper. Cloves, Wormwood and Rue (along with some tree) are the active ingredients, about a gram to 3 grams per day is about right, probably costs about $30 for 1kg of the stuff so that's over a year. *neem is the wood.
  12. I remember reading about a herbal method of worming... I can't find much in search so can anyone let me know what it was so I can research it?
  13. How do you guys do plain black framing? The way I do it annoys me, I wait till the end then merge flat, duplicate layer, layer style, stroke inside 3px. There has to be an easier way.
  14. Difference is easy to spot IMO. http://images.google.com.au/images?q=paral...sa=N&tab=wi NO spot on treatment things work for me and paralysis ticks. Whenever I use them and stop using permoxin Axle gets one. I use permoxin religiously now and he rarely gets them (none since.)
  15. Midol - it sounds to me here that your dog has actually been "forming" aggression for a while. The above section I've quoted (and particularly - but not exclusively - the section I've highlighted) are tell-tale signs of dog signalling he is not comfortable with the situation he is in and it is especially at these times that your role as leader needs to be activated. In other words, that you take steps to protect him and take charge of the situation. Of course for your dog to understand that's your job (and to trust that you will not fail in it) depends on your leadership attributes that you exhibit to him on a general and daily basis. I would suggest you enrol with a reputable dog training school (if you are not already) where you can work in a controlled environment and begin on desensitisation exercises. I have no idea of your relationship with your dog (as perceived by your dog) but running a check on heirarchy status never goes astray. It would be the most helpful if you could arrange a consultation with a behaviourist so that your dog's behaviour and your relationship could be observed and diagnosis confirmed. This person should be able to set out a program for you in relation to process of desensitisation as well as give you things to do or change in relation to your reactions to your dog's behaviour. I'll try contacting the person Husky used, I meant to do it ages ago but sorted his issues out but this one I don't think I can handle alone. There is one in Buderim (I think) I can attend. I'll try and sort out attending on a regular basis once I have a job (few weeks max) I don't mind it if he snaps back, he is going to defend himself if someone attacks him and I don't think I could ever train him not to, my issue is with him growling at innocent dogs now. Most of the dogs doing it are offleash, in onleash areas Like I said, the only place I can walk him where I doubt I'll meet offleash dogs is in the state forest which is illegal. I've called the ranger a few times but I don't think he can be bothered coming up here, we're a bit out of his way. The only way to prevent it is to walk in the state forests IMO. I encounter dogs everywhere I walk - as he is a husky if I don't walk him he is a terror Leopuppy: If another dog is biting Axle, or acting aggresively I shouldn't pick him up? If I left him he'd probably end up killing or seriously injuring the other dog...
  16. I only pick him up if another dog bites him or rushes him - is it best not to? I try to avoid the aggressive dogs but a lot of them are roaming so I don't see them till the last minute. With little dogs I usually don't let him play off lead, just on lead otherwise he gets rough (like he did with Brissygals cav).
  17. I think I may be having problems. Axle has NEVER shown dog aggression before. Whenever dogs had a go at him he'd back away with his ears down. However more and more often we are having run ins with dogs (no matter where I go) and I think I can see problems developing. He has had multiple dogs turn around and snap at him or run at him and bite his legs, I always pick him up. Usually the dogs are quite small, and because of this he is starting to growl as we pass smaller dogs. I really want to correct this behavoir as these little shits are causing me HUGE problems but I am unsure how I can fix it? I don't know anyone with smaller dogs who I can use and he is poorly behaved around small dogs (plays far too rough). I really don't want to add fuel to BSL so does anyone have any ideas? When dogs come Axle is at my feet and we've also been dropping as dogs past to teach him to ignore them but I can't see this going well if everytime he drops something bites him ILTBY suggested a spray bottle (and I counter suggested a big arse water gun) to spray them so these dogs bugger off. Does anyone have any suggestions? It really is annoying me. It happens no matter where I walk him unless I walk him in the forest which is illegal so I don't do it anymore.
  18. Hey guys. Bumping an old thread as I need a few answers and figure it's easier for when people search if more is in less threads. What kind of vegetables do people mix in? Fruits? Once I blend the veges I assume I can freeze it into individual portions? This is what I worked out: 480g total 168g raw bones 216g mince (beef, roo, chicken) 14g offal 48g veggie ------ 312g blended together and frozen. Sound good? (axle is 24kg)
  19. Heya. Axle (sibe) is coming up to 10 months and I know I can't train him to 18 months but I want to start buying gear so I don't get slugged all at once. Is it too early to get a harness? He is already at his breed standard height but not weight??? How far should I be running him at 10 months? I do 2km with him in the evening (I run further in the mornings and sometimes in the evening but he only does 2km.) Cheers, Michael.
  20. I know you said you "panicked" but I'd avoid doing that (assuming I have imagined your description correctly). Squirting the hose directly towards the back of the dog's throat could cause water to go into the lungs. Cane Toads : I know "they're coming" but I'm so glad Melbourne don't have them. Yeah - I stopped when he bit my thumb (almost instantly). I had my hand over the stream though so it was squirting straight back.
  21. I had an incident with Axle a few days ago - I panicked and just stuck the hose in his mouth which cleaned his mouth AND made him spew so if he ate any it came back up ;) I keep the golf clubs at the front door but I am thinking of adding 2ft of flyscreen to my fencing and dig it under 6'' as cane toads can't jump very high - do you think that would keep them out?
  22. DO NOT move to the Maroochy shire. Not a dog friendly shire.
  23. Aren't you glad I am a member of DOL :p
  24. Thanks for bumping this one. I had a feeling midol was a bit behind on his biology ;) Well - I did say I failed all the bio courses I took And thanks Ruger :p
  25. Anyone want to expand on the dangers of Macadamia nuts? Sites warn against them but Axle eats alot of them. He cracks them himself and has NEVER had a problem. Keeping him away from them is not possible.
