Breed Suggestions For A Young Family
Gretel replied to Little Bear's topic in General Dog Discussion
My Cavs jump on everyone with excitement when they meet them. Not everyone appreciates the greeting. I had the Lappie at a soccer game on the weekend. She loves kids. There was a little girl beside us who wanted to pat her but just couldn't bring herself to. Her dad encouraged her and I showed her some of Viennas tricks but she still couldn't do it. After several minutes Vienna just went over and lay down in front of her. The girl reached down and stroked her. It was very sweet. I've never had a dog like her with young children. She just seems to understand them :) -

Lappies don't need a lot of grooming. Vienna moults less and doesn't knot as much as the Cavaliers. She does a major moult twice a year. I brush her probably fortnightly whereas if I left the Cavs that long they'd be very knotty. The Cavs moult quite a bit. They are lovely dogs and sound like they'd fit in well with your needs. Good idea to go and meet some dogs and see which appeal. -
Breed Suggestions For A Young Family

Vienna is my first Finnish Lapphund and I've been blown away how wonderful she's been with my grandchildren. She's great to train too. Definitely a breed that's worth thinking about in my opinion. :) -
Next thing I'd add after necks is wings :) They don't need a lot of veggies. I'd not feed them every day.
-
Dogs can digest raw fruit and veg so long as they are very well processed. I recommend you buy Ian Billinghursts book on feeding for a good understanding.
-
Feed the cooked chicken and rice for a few days before slowly introducing necks and other foods back into the diet.
-
Better to cook the chicken at the moment. More easily digested. You can also toss a teaspoon of cornflour on it to firm up the stools.
-
Yes some great advice. I'd definitely be putting him on chicken and rice to settle his poor little guts. Please come and see us in the Cavalier thread and post some photos :D

My Lapphund has it for breakfast. I give her the largest pieces I can find and she takes longer to eat it than other food. She is doing well on it. I've been breaking it up for the Cavaliers. If I don't they get it in their ears. I'm too lazy to snood them for breakfast  They have it mixed with another food so can't really say how they are doing on it but they like it just fine.

That's so cute. Cavaliers do that too. :)
-
Oh how awful for you. I'm so sorry
-
Congrats Bel, what a lovely litter and well done on saving pup!
-
One stillborn boy and then a Caesar to deliver the other pup, another boy. Mum and pup seem fine.
-
Not much to report. She ate a good tea but is doing some nesting so at least making some progress :)
-
Still waiting here. Tatum is in no hurry. She had a hearty breakfast and is now asleep on the lounge.
-
Congrats Rebanne they look lovely :)

:)

Chicken wings, necks, feet.
-
Next time you're at the vet ask them to check her throat just to rule out tonsillitis.
-
It's certainly not typical Cavalier behaviour I hope there are no children about as he could give a child a nasty bite. I second the idea if contacting Steve.
-
Definitely good professional advice!
-
Oh I'm sorry Monteba Congrats on the other litters. I've just started getting things organised. Tatum is not huge so I don't think we're having many.
-
My Lapphund had it for breakfast this morning. She's only had tastes of the sample before. She took quite a while to chew her breakfast so that's a plus!

Glad he's doing well :)
