  1. I'd suggest a look at Staffy Rescue before embarking on anything
  2. What a terrible tragedy. My deepest sympathy and very best wishes.
  3. I haven't had anything but a rescue since my 16th-birthday-present bull terrier, who crossed the globe, cost my parents a fortune, died at a ripe old age in a foreign land, was well and truly loved and broke hearts on her exit. All family dogs since have been rescues, mostly mutts, all different, all characters, all totally marvellous. A great dog is a great dog. Pure-bred forum, but ... well, the mutts were - and are - sheer heaven, each and every one, and fit the bill for us. Unique is good, too, and sometimes a life is saved. This afternoon I trawled GumTree and the Dogs For Sale and ... yeuch! What's the line between breeders, dogs and profit?? There's a bloke selling his "very favourite" blue staffie "only because" they've too many dogs and he's no longer breeding from her??!! Ad includes two pictures of him cuddling dog just so you can see how much he REALLY cares. What's the difference between people who discard their breeding stock and the pups that don't shape up, and BYB or anyone else who has a dog to offload for a possible $? Seriously, I am bamboozled by it and cannot tell the difference.
  4. QUOTE (LizT @ 11th Apr 2010 - 04:20 PM) It was suggested to me recently, and I do find this point of view interesting.... that.... Pounds and Rescue groups contribute to the perpetuation of unwanted pets by finding homes for the 'rejects' and therefore increasing the demand and lessening the guilt by rehoming rather than destroying unwanted animals and lessening the effect of the statistics of unwanted and destroyed pets? I find this bizarre and warped logic and shudder to think of the mountains of corpses there would be were rescue not working such wonders.
  5. What is the acceptable requirement for people to breed dogs? Is a pound dog of less worth than another dog?
  6. Any response from our avaricious, grasping, bullying bureaucrats? We have had a spate of rangers hard at it in our 'burb recently. Among fines imposed was $330 for a woman carrying her puppy on a beach, a teenager who copped three fines for his bicycle, not on the road but at the skateboard rink in the park ... it is madness. It is grossly unjust. Fingers crossed that some sanity prevails in your case.
  7. There I was sympathising and not realising he's home. Hoorah hoorah! He looks like he's sailed through it. Good-OOO, most excellent stuff.
  8. It is absolutely absurd. Government gouges the law-abiding at every turn. Accidents happen, dogs do get out. Deepest sympathy. This just SUX big time.
  9. America's dogs of war ... heaven forfend. Those snazzy Iraqi (??) rooms they're sprawling in? Great dogs, brave chaps, but it all leaves me somewhat uneasy and wishing patriotic Americans would stop it, rather.
  10. Far rather give rescue a chance. Pet shops sell pups - acquired from God knows where - with no onus to desex, no vet or owner checks ... far better to give rescue an outlet for perfectly good dogs which are otherwise just more corpses on a giant pile. Sigh! At least rescue is coming from somewhere other than $ motivation, and though I would never support a pet shop selling animals, I would whole-heatedly back one that is giving animal cast-offs/retreads/rejects/orphans a chance.
  11. I think it is great to see these issues being raised for debate - ambit boundaries, ambit moralities. A new generation is already grappling with a future no one can take for granted, and I'm impressed and humbled by the number of smart and savvy vegos that my bloke's vegan 17-year-old grandson numbers among his circle. It's not for everyone, but it doesn't feel like a bad thing, either.
  12. Just signed like fury, and made the rellos do ditto. Any time a pound's practices are up for re-assessment is a time for animal lovers to go like the clappers. Hup hup people, get the petition out there. Is anyone able to get this petition on other sites where it can draw gazillions of signatures? It's a sad thing that it takes vandals to highlight the plight of animals - complacent, selfish, blinkered society that we are. These are the pets we love right here whose future is being decided. Maybe Kurri pound will raise the bar for councils around the country. DMA, please post this in Rescue so it can be broadcast among the various rescues. The wonderful PetRescue site and people might also have some suggestions. More power to you. xx
  13. How about a generous donation in their name to an animal rescue organisation? It would be tax deductible to them and would be helping other dogs, and since your boy is a rescue and they are obviously animal lovers and decent people they'd be hard-pressed not to be glad that some good was coming of a most unfortunate accident!
  14. Without meaning to put the wind up, it might also behove to view the Rescue and Urgent Rescue threads. A good many staffords end up on death row and that might also weigh on considerations, hopefully.
  15. Too many dogs. Rescue knows this all too well. Desex, desex, desex - and since there are way too many dogs, well, I haven't read all the posts but I heartily endorse desexing all dogs. Go Rescue!!!
  16. My dearly departed Hoffman had a real hate session with a GSD that beat him up and he could recognise german shepherds at any distance ever after, even if they were mere silhouettes on the horizon. Other dogs of similar size made no impression at all.
  17. The thought of three unleashed staffies climbing into another dog is too horrifying. How would you even begin to stop a scrap like that? It's a nightmare scenario for an owner of harmless, defenceless, friendly, cowardly sooks, such as my guys.
  18. Or maybe they can all be debarked. Or maybe they can be sent to a school that stops them behaving like dogs. Perhaps, though, as a dog lover, you might buy an iPod and set off to the sounds of music and be glad to give a few other (possibly very bored) dogs a few moments' excitement and enjoyment BARKING - as dogs will (God bless 'em) - at dogs going past. Arf arf! You might even be surprised to hear from irate neighbours that your dogs bark sometimes, too. Blimey ...
  19. Maybe enough complaints to council can have dogs banned in your neighbourhood.
