I've had family dogs in the past, but this will be the first dog I have sole responsibility for and I want to do raise it as best I can. Ideally, a book that has information about the different foods to feed, what ages to start training and socialising, crate training, etc. I've already bought "The dog whisperer" which is mostly theory, so i'm in the market for a book that is more of a "How-To" type guide. Also there was a wonderful one called 'RSPCA Complete Dog Training Manual' by Dr Bruce Fogle. I hope it helps and other than that can I just say your Avatar is gorgeous. Go the Typewriter! pawpaw Posted June 13, 2007 Share Posted June 13, 2007 Two books that I have found useful are Before You Get Your Puppy and After You get Your Puppy by Dr Ian Dunbar. These were recommended to me by our breeder and have relevant information. You can buy them from pet suppliers etc, but are at the higher price end. I don't know if your local library would have them or maybe you could borrow them from someone who already has them as they cost between $27-35. Hope this helps! It was pretty insightful, but its american and they can sometimes refer to american things, weights, measurements, ammerican kennel clubs etc. It has things like, basic training, different stages of a puppy's development, puppy and dog behaviour etc and you dont have to read from the beginning. I just find the chapter that i want more info on and read. Overall its pretty decent as i didnt want to do heavy reading. The typewriter was my favourite animation on Sesame Street (after the 12 song) ...P.s What sort of pup do you have? A tan and white Tenterfield Terrier. I don't have him yet, but i'm visiting him this friday and hopefully the breeder will think i'm a good enough owner for him! I've already passed the inital screening, so friday is the full interview ;) If so, i'll have him in 2 weeks!!! So i'm going to 'bone up' on all my puppy knowledge before then (couldn't resist the pun, sorry!) why would you want a book when you have DOL? :D Yeah tell me about it! There is TOO much information for me (and some conflicting opinions) on this forum so I figured if I get a decent book, I can follow the advice without confusing myself. Ceasar Milans book Ive read the Gwen Bailey book which i think is easier than both also liked the Australian book called dog whisperer.. I'll certainly be reading it fully. I went to Borders, and would you believe, they had every dog book under the sun BUT the ones you guys mentioned. So, I bought "Puppy's First Steps: The Whole-Dog Approach to Raising a Happy, Healthy, Well-Behaved Puppy", as it was the most complete one I could find. Although my boyfriend refuses to believe me, I DIDN'T buy the book because the cover looks exactly like the puppy i'm hoping to get... I promise! 'Everydog' by Eric Allen and Rowan Blogg is a good one in basic care and health, and is written by Australian Vets. I've got 'First Aid for Dogs' by Tim Hawcroft, it's a small book and I found it for really cheap here in Vic, but it's been awesome for when the dogs eat something they're not supposed to and you want to check if they need treatment. Its not overly expensive think from memory around the $25 mark. Although its not so much on puppy care but on training. I downloaded the Dunbar book today as the link I had previously was text only.
