First of all hello all, This is Ben and Sarah.

We are going to pick up our first beagle puppy on friday night (26th) she will be 8 weeks old. and we are SOO excited.

But just in need of help with a few things.

We are all ready as far as the house goes! Its puppyproof! We have a lil bed for downstairs and a crate in our room for sleeping. A heap of toys, puppy Kong etc. Outdoor puppy pen. Little collar and lead.

What i am wondering is when should we start training? Straight away? or wait for a bit? We are going to take her to kellyville pets for a bit of training, Good idea?

Does anyone have any tips for training a little beagle that we can try ourselfs?

Here she is last friday so @ 7 weeks!

Looking around

She found a scent around the bin! We would put her down and she would run straight back to that spot!

Aw she is absolutley adorable, congratulations !

Have you looked into a couple of local puppy schools ? There is one at quakers hill and also rooty hill both at the vets there, plenty of others around. If you're picking her up on Friday, maybe see if you can sign her up for the following weekend. NOt sure what kind of program kellyville pets has ? Just make sure she doesn't come into contact with other dogs that may not be vaccinated (puppy schools will check vacc certificates to make sure all participants are clear)

I would say you can start training her, just a little bit, almost straight away. Give her a couple of days to settle in and just do little 5 minute stints of training at a time.

Hi there,

Thanks for that! We have a little brochure here on kellyville pets puppy school and they check all vac docs before letting puppys in! YAY! Ok so if we just let her settle for the w.e then maybe Sunday we just start trying "come" command or something?

Have you used those puppy schools you sujested? Were they good?

Thanks for your reply!

I'd avoid the place like the plague and if you want to do puppy pre-school choose a vet clinic that runs them or better still wait until she's 16 weeks and then head off to obedience.

Beagles are by their very nature social and outgoing little creatures, she would be fine if you just take her out with you to meet people and see the world , before she heads off to obedience later on.

They sell puppies and kittens to begin with, so personally I wouldn't support any place that does so.

I would not risk a young baby at a dog park but certainly find out for later when she is older , fully vaccinated and less likely to be intimidated by other dogs.

Have you done some reading on training puppies yet? I have read alot of people on here recommend this website.. http://www.dogstardaily.com/training/your-...puppy-education

The "come" command generally happens a bit later down the track.. sit, down and stay are generally the easier ones to start with.

Before starting with specific commands, I would be inclined to want to teach the pup the basics around the house..where it can and cannot go, how you want her to behave, concentrate on toileting (NEVER let her out of your site). Toilet training, as in being 100% reliable even when you're not around, takes more than a few days/weeks.

Stay away from the petstore. I know which one it is and I can't imagine what they would have to offer you. Most vets run good ones. Choose one that comes recommended

Take your puppy everywhere with you..carry her if you're in an area where there is likely to have been alot of dogs so she doesn't catch anything. Expose her to different people, noises ans sights. Always act nonchalant-if you soothe her and fuss over her she will only think there is a reson to be scared and it will make it worse..tough love!

Once your puppy comes home, from the very beginning, treat her how you intend for it to be in the long run. Hopefully Huski will see this thread and give some good advice re- beagles! ETA: he may also have some advice on dog parks .. at the very least, don't take her to one until she is fully vaccinated, and preferably never with other dogs-it's a recipe for disaster. Actually, maybe so a search on the threads (top right hand corner of the page) on "dog park" and have a read :(

Ok great thankyou for your advice PPS and Labby.

I will do some hunting around at vets then  We have read ourselves to sleep at night for the past 4 weeks on different training methods man there are alot! We may just try what seems to work and have some nice fresh meat on the ready for training rewards :)

The minute she is home i will take her outside and see if she wants to go as its a 40min drive! Its near Penrith.

Thats what we need to really crack down on is the Toilet training as we are renting!!! Although we are not expecting no accidents!

Its all pretty exciting for us. I grew up on a farm so have only had Boarder collies and they are a dream and our one back home is still going strong at nearly 15.

So a beagle should be different, But we have read all the negatives and the positives and well, Sarah and i think we can do it! :(

Ooh a really good training treat is chicken! Poach a chicken breast in some water and chicken stock then just shread it into little bits for them.. its a nice healthy yummy treat for them!

Then freeze the water in little ice cubes trays for a tasty treat outside sometimes! Oh I want my puppy !

Ben that dogstardaily website is a good reference for a number of pup questions.

There is soooo much info out there which is fantastic but can also make it hard to wade through what's the best thing for you and your situation.

I really recommend puppy school for the crucial socialisation period (you will see the various pup development phases pinned in this puppy probs thread) - the idea is to help them start to socialise with other pups in a controlled environment. It's a good idea if you seek out a vet in advance as well since you'll need to get vaccinations not too long after she comes home - they should be able to direct you to some puppy school options. It will also give you some assistance with basic training before you get to obedience school (if that's the path you take) a little later on.

For toilet training, crate training works well for many people, it's worked fantastically for us with our new pup who's 11 weeks and now jsut about sleeping through the night thanks to the assistance of the crate.

Welcome to DOL! What a gorgeous puppy

Also are there any dog parks around kellyville? I think i saw one in Rouse Hill just behind the big fruit shop and shell on windor road?

I agree with other posters in regards to not taking puppies to dog parks - I don't even take my two year old beagle to dog parks, I've had far too many bad experiences. If you are keen to go to a dog park I would hold off until your pup is through her critical development period and is closer to 12 months old - a bad experience in their critical period can mean behaviourial problems for life.

I'd have a read of K9 Force's Puppy Development Calendar that's pinned at the top of the puppy forum here - it will give you a good idea of what to expect.

I would look for a good puppy pre school and then I would enroll in an obedience club. Controlled socialisation is the key, another reason I would stay away from dog parks with pups as they tend to be a free for all and you have no idea on the temperament of the dogs you are socialising your pup with. As PPS suggested, beagles are generally happy, confident little pups - when my beag was a pup we took her out and about from day one (sensibly of course as she wasn't fully vaccinated) - she met lots of people and had a variety of POSITIVE experiences - socialisation is more than just meeting other dogs, it is giving the pup a variety of new experiences and assigning them a value.

I would also be inclined to do a search on the forum for crate training and consider getting a crate - my beagle loves her crate and they can be handy when it comes to toilet training.

Beagles can be a handful as they are stubborn and quite strong willed but they are very food driven and tend to learn things quite quickly, if you use food as motivator :( I started training my pup from the day we bought her home at eight weeks and we're now training to compete for our obedience title - as long as you give them boundaries and a clear set of rules to follow you will be on the right track!

If you like, I also suggest having a read of this article about the NILIF training principle - it's how I raised my beagle:

http://k9deb.com/nilif.htm

I also started Daisy on the Triangle of Temptation from when she was a pup, it works well for beagles as they are generally very food driven :)

Thats some very very good advice Huski thanks so much for that!

I like the sound of that NILIF. Once i have taught her some basics i think that will be the way to go and really i agree with it 100%.

The one thing i dont want is a dog thats the boss of me or my partener Sarah.

Thanks so much for the advice. I will post up a video of her when we get her and some more photos of her at home.

Also we have got a crate. It is upstairs in our room as thats where she will sleep. We also have a little bed downstairs in the living room right with us for during the day and when we are not sleeping.

Cheers everyone. If anyone has anything els they would like to add feel free i am all ears/eyes

Firstly, congratulations!! I just bought a Beagle puppy (Snuffy)two months ago so I know how excited you must be! I had never owned a Beagle before either, and they are different dogs that's for sure! Mine has her nose permanently fixed to the ground like a fifth leg! I didn't realise how much they love to talk to you either! Snuffy ( a whole 15 weeks old now!) loves to have a chat to you and it really is a delightful yodel-like kind of noise. Really cute! She is quite clever though and we started her very basic training straight away. She can come to her name now, sit and, a new party trick, "speak" with a hand command. All of this was done with tasty food incentives - I used a pieces of hamburger left over from our dinner the night before (husband was not happy, he wanted it for a midnight snack!)

anyway, excuse the rambling but I hope you have a great time with your new pup!

Ohh thats great! Nonono by allmeans keep rambling i like to read about other beagles and the experiences the owners have had! Just makes me more excited! I have seen a few videos on youtube of beagles having a little sing/howl/yodle haha i cant wait! You should get a vid of her talking would be great to see!

Bailey is what we are going to call our pup.

Shes a playfull little one with plenty of energy just cant wait to take her home!

Yay for beagle pups! Very cute pics

Ergh Kellyville Pets.. I've heard some not so nice things about that place, and have seen some not so nice dogs who have been bought from there. Plus it's seriously over priced. I would strongly, VERY STRONGLY, advise you to try Hills Kennel Club instead for your puppy training/obedience classes. It's at Castle Hill showground, so not very far from Kellyville. You'll pay a lot less and get a much better experience out of it!

Like others have suggested, stay away from dog parks will your puppy has had its full course of vaccinations and then a few more weeks for them to kick in completely. But that being said, there are a couple of off leash dog parks in Castle Hill and one in Cherrybrook too.
