Puppy Pet Carrier Backpack/frontpack

I'm getting a 8wk old retriever puppy soon and I'm looking for a comfortable, nice looking backpack/frontpack to carry my pup.

I already have a 2yr old retriever that is walked twice a day and I want the pup to come out with us on walks before he gets all his needles/vac's. Carrying the pup in my arms on walks is out of the question (to hard and to heavy). A frontpack/ backpack carrier will just make things so much easier when we take him out for socialisation with the outside world.

I'm not looking for a handbag type but a backpack/frontpack.

The pups a retriever so I need something that he can fit in nicely. Has anyone got a brand or type that they recommend?

Dogs are not meant to be carried around like that..and IMO I think maybe it would create a problem with the pup wanting to be carried a lot afterwards?

Why not buy a second hand pram.. and use a small crate on that... or buy a pet stroller to push around? At least puppy would be at the correct level, and on its 4 feet ..

Unfortunatly Labs/goldies, not sure which you are getting, grow so fast each week, so unless you are super strong, he/she will be pretty heavy. Im not sure you can get carry packs that big for large breeds. He/she will be uncomfortable in that kind of set up because of fairly large limbs even at 8 weeks. Dont be tempted to get him out into the wild just yet, make sure he has a steady temprement first otherwise he might just get too overwhelmed by barking dogs, etc, you may loose effective control over your other dog if puppy starts scrambling around.

Be patient.

Depending on where you plan to walk your older dog could carry bugs home so carrying pup will be a waste of time.

Your pup will need time to adjust to its new home & the new dog so the last thing i would be worrying about is exposing it to the outside world until its comfy with its new home.

4 weeks isnt a big wait & depending on which vacc the breeder uses it could be 10 weeks

I'd wait until pup can go out on his feet, it won't be long and then you will have to walk them separatly anyway as pup won't be able to do the same distance as the adult.

I have used a backpack- round on my front to take a Kelpie pup for 'walks'. She was quite sick and so her first vac was at 8 wks and I left her second till 16wks. I choose to do short walks round the block with her from 10wks just to get her used to cars, people and dogs walking past. I just used a cheap back pack and put a jumper under her so she could see out and had a harness on her incase she made a jump for it. By then end she didnt need anything to raise her up.

I also used it once she could walk as she was tiny and didnt always want to walk for as long as the rest of the gang. At 18mths she dosent want to be picked up anymore than my other dogs and I think she is probably the easist of my Kelpies to walk (understood early on what a loose lead was!). She didnt come for every walk so my other dogs had 'alone' time, which is important to consider with your new addition Kem- the walk will probably be time out for your older dog!
