Please Have Diesel In Your Thoughts

So glad to hear that the pred cheered Diesel up. It would mean that he has been overdosed on the Trilostane (easy thing to happen). Most people with Cushpups have a small supply of pred to give if the dog is o/d'ing. I would think that Diesel would not be on the pred for too long, as it should not take long for his cortisol to level out again. He may even be able to have a rest from the Trilostane for a short while. A number of dogs on Trilostane get turned Addy for a while, some for life and then they need pred for life.

Keeping the fighting boy in my thoughts.

I thought that was right Loraine - see how much you've taught us!

I just want to make sure DW understands what the medication is used for and what is happening... they can appear really sick sometimes but it's simply a matter of medication dosages, and a small adjustment can make a huge difference. It's taken me a long time to understand it all and what is really happening - and know what signs to look out for.

I know DW suffers and worries so much, so DW do you understand what the meds are doing and why Diesel is having this reaction to the Trilostane? Just want to make sure you do so that you are making the best decisions for Diesel. Hopefully if he is seeing a specialist they can even out his dosages, and tell you what signs to look out for in case the Trilostane works too well again and he becomes Addisonian.

Keep your chin up. Ask about the different medications, but if you stay on Trilostane make sure you know what signs to look out for so that his levels are not fluctuating all over the place (or not as all over the place as they can possibly be with Cushings  ) - I guess the tumour wreaking havoc makes it more complicated (and boy isn't it already complicated  ).

Has he had any seizures recently DW? You haven't mentioned any and that's a good sign hopefully  Loraine, could his most recent seizures have been triggered by him becoming Addisonian? I think I read somewhere that Addisonian's can have seizures - could it have been a trigger (although of course also related to his tumour)?

Seizures are not necessarily common to Addy dogs, BUT DW has an aggressive pituitary tumor and was having seizures before being diagnosed (if I remember correctly). I would think the tumor is still growing and that would cause seizures to come back.

Keeping DW and Deisel in my good thoughts.

Oh okay, I just thought there might have been a link... or should I say, just wishful thinking

  • 5 weeks later...

Hi All,

Just thought I'd pop in to update you on Diesel. It's been a tough few weeks since we last logged in. Diesey has become very weak, especially in his back legs. We found out about Cabergoline treatment that was used to treat dog's with macroadenomas... gave it to him last Tuesday and it nearly killed him. I was up the whole night with him vommitting till 5am  I won't be giving him that again!

The Friday before that I started him on some Herbal treatments from Robert McDowell, by the Monday lunchtime he seemed to improve a little, but then Tues night we gave him the Cabergoline and undid any good from the herbs, vommitted 9 times, poor pup.

This weekend we took him to the beach, my parents have a little beach house, so we spent the weekend there, much better for him there as it's all flat with a nice yard and he can go for lots of swims. He is MUCH better after a swim, he even enjoyed a lamb shank in the yard yesterday. We're planning to spend lots of time up there, so diesey can be in his favourite place.

KL do you know any good specialist's? We'll be on Sydney's Northern Beaches from this week, and I'm based on the North Shore. I don't want him to go through anything invasive, I just want to improve the quality of whatever time he has left.

Thanks for reading

Just been reading this thread about Deisel and all the things you have gone through with him. Some of the posts brought tears to my eyes, then read another one when he's improving and made me smile.

I have no advice except to say no one could do more than you are doing now for him, he's a lucky guy to have you , and you him.

Thinking of you and sending big hugs to you both

We are praying for many more beach swims to come.

YOu have done everything you can, and you have done such a fantastic job. Diesels quality of life is a testament to this.

Oh goodness, doesn't sound good but I'm pleased that he is having fun and improving a little. Do I know a good specialist? Well I certainly do! Well, I know of Chloe's specialists, who I have utmost faith in and have been really good to us. They are called the Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) and generally you will need your vet to refer you. There is one at Strathfield and one at Baulkham Hills - we go to the one at Strathfield. There are a number of good specialists there - I would trust any of them, but Chloe's is Dr John Angles. Here is their website for you to browse: www.arhvets.com

The staff there are so friendly and really seem to care for the animals, which I love.

Anyway, have a look at their site - give them a call and talk to them if it will help you. They may not be what you are looking for, but they have been a Godsend to me (x2) once for Chloe's leg operations, and again for her Cushings.

You two take care... give Diesel lots of hugs and love from us, okay?

Keep us updated, and thanks for checking in!

Thanks all for your kind messages. KL and Loraine especially - honestly you have helped me more than you could imagine, this site and the CCAC yahoo group are what has gotten Diesel and I through this so far, thank you xx

Today we have moved temporarily to the old beach house, and he loves the yard (and another lamb shank). I took him to the local vet (it's the first time he's seen Diesel since he's been sick) and had a really long talk with him, as I've been wondering if it's time to let him go, I'm worried I won't see the signs beacuse I don't want to. The vet said that his vital signs are all strong, he said the cushings is making him detoriate, but he wasn't immediately concerned with any of those symptoms. He thought Diesey was still responsive and in good spirits and he doesn't think he is in pain. He has referred me to a specialist in Ryde, she is a neurologist, so we'll go have a chat to her. Though I like the sound of ARH, maybe I should be going there instead. I wan't someone to put in the time for him, why is it me doing the research and not the vets??!!

What a crazy ride it's been, I feel so much better having a vet tell me that Diesey isn't suffering, that's what's been tormenting me, so onwards and upwards we continue, there could be another mircale yet!

DW - every day you have with him is your miracle. Don't ever forget that

Have a chat to both specialists, and see who you feel comfortable with if you are unsure. A certain vet can be good for one dog - but not suit another. You know Diesel best, and your gut will tell you who is the right specialist to look after your precious boy. The ARH are great though, I've only had one slightly negative experience with them when Chloe's specialist was on holidays... however other than that I can't praise them enough and have been dealing with them for more than 4 years now. Still, they may not be what you are looking for - I think you need to be able to trust a specialist 100% if you go to see them. Otherwise it's a waste of time and you will just stress yourself more than you already are. But if you find the one that you trust fully, it will take some of that worry and pressure off you.

Bless you both xox

We went and saw the neurologist today, she said there is nothing she can do and we just talked about euthanasia eventually...

My specialist from Brisbane called late this afternoon ( She has been the best supporter of Diesey x 10000) and she said that it woud be a shame not to do an MRI or CT scan when we've come this far. Her advice was that if the MRI showed that the tumor has grown - then we should not wake him from his anaesthetic, but if the tumor has shrunk or is the same size as six months ago - then we can try and manage his symptoms

She (Brisbane specialist) said to take him to ARH - the one you go to Kelly! So hopefully Diesey is going in 10:15am next wednesday, and I really, really hope with all my heart that he comes back out with me too

Well he will be in good hands there - have no doubts. If there is a chance for Diesel, then they will find it. If the worst happens (let's hope not) then at least you will know you've done everything you can for Diesel - and no one could ask any more than that.

Praying for some good results for you and Diesel. I also hope that he will come back out with you too, but again, that decision will be up to you and depend on the results you get.

Do you know the name of the specialist you will be seeing? It will most likely be a different one as I'm assuming Diesel will need a different field of specialty. Chloe's specialist is a medicinal specialist - ie specialising in conditions that can be controlled with medicines. Perhaps if the news is good, Diesel will also see the same specialist.

Best of luck anyway, and let us know - we'll be here for you and waiting... how are his symptoms lately?
