"Ew mum, that's a VEGETABLE, you expect me to eat it?" :p same with Kuma. He just bats carrots around the place and leaves them in the most unlikely places (like under the couch). Now, if it was bacon on the other hand... So our new Akita is going to come to the park as often as possible - which is great! I think Max and this Akita are quite taken wiht each other. Its because Max runs - so she can chase - and also because they both have the same greeting style - I think ie walk up to each other, sniff, sniff, swipe with the paw, take off. Its especially good that they're continuing to come because of a little incident that occurred. So our Brittany is quite shy. A princess. A few days ago the group was already in the park and she was approaching with owner, but she was off-lead. The Akita and Lab came up to say hello, she freaked out, and not getting any safer by hiding behind her owner's legs took off... out of the park... down the street... back to her house. Eeeeks! With the Akita in hot persuit! Eeeeeks! Not even near to having your dog shirk out of his collar and run amok at the obedience club Christmas party (can I ever go back?) - but close. All's well that ends well though. The Brittany was marched straight back to the park to be sure everything was okay, and the Akita is just being kept a little closer eye on. You have just detailed my greatest fear... Pretty much why Kuma is most on lead in the dog park. I'm glad they're coming back to the park tho, no point letting the Brittany staying scared and the Akita getting into trouble for doing what they do... Apparently Genevieve likes tempting fate. I swear she is going to eat herself to her death. As said on FB - not her, she's innocent. Local maurading hooligans are to blame. She protected herself and sacrificed the lamp. True story. In other news, I bought Ruby her first bag of adult food today. So much conflicting information about when to change over, but I figured, she's 8 1/2 months old now, and lots of people on DOL stop feeding puppy food to their dogs before they're even 6 months (so I read). Anyway. We'll see how she goes. I just hope she likes it as much as the puppy version Roo on her new bed is so cute! so are all your other "towel" shots. So adorable We have about 20Kg of puppy food left. Once we're through that we'll transition Kuma to Adult food - he'll be about 18 months old then. I gave him some pet mince from Leonards with his dinner last night - it looks like minced offcuts, innards, carcuss, etc - I think he liked it, his bowl was licked clean in a heart beat. For only $1/Kg it's pretty good value! Canberrans - Australia Day AM Doggy Date sounds great. Will it be at BDOC? I'm so keen to get Hoover and Elbie running around a large field with other dogs. Hoover might run until his heart explodes ;) KA: Elbie's starting lunging at cars, which is not cool :p We have an appointment with K9 Steve next month for training tips so I'll definitely be raising this then. I'm not sure why cars have suddenly became so interesting to him - he was never really that enthralled before. Yet another reason why L.B. is never going off lead outside of a fenced area ... As to barking dogs, OH said that the other day, the dogs were barking like loons. Why? The neighbour thought that it would be a good idea to stand by the fence and hold up one of his dogs and say: "Look at Elbie and Hoover". The dogs on both side of our house bark a lot and we're just lucky that Elbie and Hoover seem to have become desensitised to it and don't bark back. There have been so many times when I've heard Elbie barking, run to the door to yell at him, only to discover Elbie's sitting right next to me inside and that he's been framed by a neighbour's dog Once I went to the door to look for Elbie only to discover that Elbie Also, if anyone wants to report me to the RSPCA for cruelty to my dogs, the number is 6287 8111 but given their limited resources, I'm sure they've got better things to do :p I am so calling the authorities - how could you leave your dogs unattended??? :D geeze louise... some people take things to the extreme. We'd never leave Kuma unattended because I have seen photos of the damage an Akita can do to a car in 10 minutes, I would rather not run the risk! Keep doing what you're doing, your furkids will be a-ok. Ahh, car lunging... Kuma is not bad with cars, its just runners and other dogs. We're working on it tho - he did well this morning. Let's hope we can string two days in a row Don't worry - Kuma will not be an off-lead dog either! Elbie and Kuma can be On-Lead buddies together. You'll really enjoy K9Pro - Steve will be able to give you some really good tips on how to work with Elbie. Max#1: You are hilarious ... I'm not a huge fan of Dominos but OH is Canadian and it's the closest we can get to the pizzas from The Great Frozen North Honestly, I am not in favour of leaving dogs alone in hot cars but the while pious, holier-than-though sanctimonious 'tude makes my fur stand on end sometimes ... DOLers are not all the perfect dog owners All The Time that they claim to be and the occasional bit of Not So Good dog ownership doesn't instantly consign one to one of the Nine Levels of Dog Owner Hell. Actually my idea of Dog Owner hell is being stuck with a few of the more rabid DOLers for eternity .. yoicks ... ;) :laugh: Just read the thread. Oh dear. This is how I found Ruby's best dog friend this afternoonThey're determined to dig a tunnel under the fence to each other They played bitey face for ages this afternoon under the fence That is soooooo cute! * We went and visited one of the local kennels yesterday - yass pets. They seem to be really nice. Their set up is good, they will continue your dogs routine and food as requested. They also have a dam on the property which I'm sure Kuma would love with a passion. They had boarded an Akita before, so they know what the breed is like - they are also pretty responsible and wouldn't socialise him with small dogs and unstable dogs... I have heard good things about them from colleagues, so Kuma may get a two week vacation on the farm... It'll break my heart to leave him there tho! Have a great day all! KTB - I still think eating domino's pizza is wrong. I'm sorry. But we only ever eat home-made pizzas, made with organic ingredients, sourced only from local shops. And we only ever eat two slices each, with low-fat vegan cheese. The dog, is only allowed to smell the pizza (note, we allow that thereby not diminishing our role as 'pack leader'), and is by no means allowed to have a piece, not even a crumb or morsel........ KTB and KA - you really think that you can't trust your dogs off-lead? I wish I could take you both for a walk with me. There's some nice places we could go that you can let the dogs off-lead, and its not a box fenced-park, so its a bit more interesting. At least Elbie and Kuma don't sound to be as energetic as Max. If his exercise requirements were to be met by me walking him on lead, I can tell you I would be walking ALL day.... As luck would have it, there's an awesome italian pizzaria at our local shops that make delicious pizza. So, not organic with local ingredients, but close :p Oh, and nope, Kuma would run for the hills if off lead. He would come back eventually, just in his own sweet time. We go for a walk each morning - about 30 mins - and when I leave for work he is sound asleep. He's LAZY. He does need a run around a park soon tho, he's getting a bit stir-crazy. wuffles Posted January 23, 2011 Share Posted January 23, 2011 Mine are fine with cars but go a bit silly on walks over other dogs :p Ava is still jogging with OH some mornings but while he used to whinge that she would slow down and want to pee all the time, now he is complaining that she's too excitable and that she bounces around like an idiot, mouths the leash and lunges at other dogs He really doesn't have much patience for dog training. I tried giving him some advice but I'm not sure whether he'll take it or not :D Satch is an on leash dog (ummm... except occasionally in the local reserve or a fenced dog park). He has a similar attitude to life as Kuma Ava on the other hand is fine off leash, I wouldn't say her recall is 100% but it's pretty good. I don't walk her off leash near roads or anything, but ovals, reserves, fields, dirt tracks etc... she can be trusted. I still think Elbie and Hoover would have no issues in areas like that. They aren't the type of dogs to run away from you, unlike a certain black dog. Walking on leash actually tires my two out quite a bit. Anything over 45 minutes and Satch is dragging his feet along the ground. Ava would go forever, but is very calm after 45 minutes. I think an hour's on lead walk actually tires Ava out to similar levels as 45 minutes at the dog park... KA, you'll have to let me know what the kennels are like if you decide to use them. Still trying to decide what to do with ours when we go away ;) Happy to do BDOC on Wednesday although there are no guarantees that it will be empty. What time could everyone make it? Just why? Some people... :D I love Ruby's determined playmate Gorgeous dog. Congratulations on her using the trampoline bed! James will occasionally sleep in his (expensive) dog bed at night when it's a little cooler, but otherwise he goes out of his way to avoid sleeping on lovely soft blankets/beds in favour of concrete, brick, tile, wooden decking...you name it ;) Ruby does a brilliant seal impression James has been working very hard on his frog look, of late. I'm loving the Dobe puppy photos - both Astrid and Echo are seriously adorable. And am amazed at Genevieve's destructive powers! What a deceptively sweet girl ;) I don't think you could stay mad too long at that face. James' days of sleeping came to an abrupt halt last week and he's since turned into an irritating turd of a dog again His new game is grabbing a cushion or the remote and bouncing off the couches like a fool until he's chased. Between the hot weather and the rain, we didn't get out to walk until Saturday and the week in the kennel did absolutely no favours to his loose leash walking. He was a maniac! To his credit, he calmed down a little on the return journey until he flopped over in a neighbour's front yard and refused to move. It was a 30 minute walks - tops! Elbie always looks so guilty that even when it's Hoover that's Done Wrong, our first instinct is to blame Elbie. Genevieve looks angelic! lilli_star: great photos of Ruby – she looks so mournful and cute with that towel. Also, is that your bed she's lying on in this photo http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/ja...uby/sealroo.jpg ? She looks so comfy and sleek! Her seal-ears are great. I have to remember to take a recent seal-ears shot of Elbie – he looks so funny when he does it. Also that photo of Ruby's friend across the fence? That is sooooooooooooo funny! Theirs is a Forbidden Love … KA: Elbie and Hoover are fine in the car – no destruction but we have a lot of nose prints on the window. Also, the last time we were in Dominos, we were watching through the glass as someone was standing outside the car blowing kisses at our doggies. Clearly a dog-lover but I'm sure our dogs didn't know what to make of this stranger kissing them through the glass. Max#1: I remain unrepentant. I also eat McDonalds, sometimes! :p I prefer Pizza Capers (recommended by CleoJ) but Mama Koala and OH prefer Da Dominos. I fear our doggies will be doomed to fenced in dog parks … although our club grounds when no one's around are pretty huge and I think that the dogs will be able to run and run and run to their hearts' content. I don't doubt that our dogs would come back when we call … they just might not come back immediately :D Niques what is the frog look? Hoover has developed a really bad habit of just flopping out on the ground wherever he is. The worst is when he lies directly under my swivel chair and OH warns me: "Careful – Hoover's head/chair/paw is under your chair!" clastic: I wonder what the angry DOLers would say to me if they knew how long Elbie was in the car when he was sin-binned during HH's Saturday classes ... Other than in a fairly small, completely confined dog park. But in an open space - definitely not. Akitas are known for having pretty crap recall. Well, more so that no matter how well trained you think they are, there will come a time when they find something better and they'll just run and run and run and run.... We've already seen this and boy is it not fun for us All the breeders I spoke to said they are never, ever to be let off-lead. And where did you get that awesome inside bed for G? I saw one I loved on Petitude, but they don't have the size I want anymore... kyliegirl - Love the pic of Echo chewing on the carrot. It takes a bit of effort for my guys to eat veges, Pepper just likes to chew it into a million pieces before thinking of swallowing it. Mars thinks I'm feeding him poison! Also, Echo is so shiny and healthy! Looking fantastic! Sammies - Welcome back to you and gorgeous Asti! lilli_star - at Roo's friend under the fence and her sleeping inside her crate. Hope she likes her inside bed soon.. I'd like to get Mars & Pepper one of those trampoline beds, but not sure what they would think of them.. Fellow Canberrans - I'm good to go for 9am Wednesday too! ETA: KTB - Oh yes, those times poor Elborino got banished to the car. But yes, windows were down, he had water and we were only a few steps away. I ducked out to get some stuff and OH went to the petrol station next door meaning that the doggies would be alone in the car when he was filling up the petrol (2 cm away) and also alone in the car when he paid for the petrol (10 metres away). I warned him to be on the lookout for any angry DOLers who might come and smash the windows of the car... We've taught Hoover how to beg. He took a really long time to learn. Elbie learned by imitation and learned quickly. Hoover took ages so we resorted to watching youtube videos. As a result, Hoover does the 'traditional' and 'classic' beg style and we have realised that as novice owners, we have taught Elbie the somewhat spethal beg style that makes him look like he's surrendering or flailing about in the air. We used to wonder why everyone laughed at his 'beg' and now we know why. Tonight when we were looking at Hoover's beg, OH asked me: "Do you think we even knew what 'beg' was supposed to look like when we taught Elbie how to beg????" Poor Elborino Video . Sorry KTB, your post and that vid had me in tears! One of my first dogs 'begged' and I guess it was kinda spastic... The frog is the traditional flat-out sprawl on the floor that strongly resembles a bearskin rug - front paws out, head down and rear legs straight out, although a little off-kilter to give them the froggie look. I stalked James all afternoon waiting for him to do it so I could take a photo but alas, he did not oblige. Poor sensible Hoover Elbie does look the tiniest bit insane next to his practical brother. I love the nearly off-camera flailing of limbs ;) Never been game enough to teach James to beg - I'm worried that he'd topple over backwards. And knowing him, he so would! Although I lie, he does prop himself in the beg position when sitting on the couch sometimes. But I can never resist pushing him over for a bellyrub. Elbie's "spastic beg" makes me think of little kids in class who are busting to tell you the answer "Ooh! I know! Pick me! Pick me!" ETA In the 2 1/2 hours I was gone this morning getting my hair done (uhhh, my hair is really thick ) Ruby decided to 'remove' the tag on her trampoline bed...and it started to tear the cover. *Sigh* Her calmness tricked me! Trying to work out if I should get mine up early to come along or whether that will just make him grumpy. I'm assuming at least Mr Koala will be there, he is so dedicated... I'm thinking of trying the Black Hawk Holistic food that lots of people on DOL are raving about. It's cheaper than RC, technically has better ingredients and it would be nice just to feed the two dogs the same food (they're in a different weight range according to RC). I've emailed the supplier to see if I can get a bag. KTB, you could probably retrain a normal beg pretty easily. Just ditch the word 'beg' and start fresh. I know in a lot of the videos from the US, people use the command 'sit pretty' instead, so maybe you could try that The next thing I want to teach Ava is to bow (and hold it!). (Edit: Actually the next thing I want her to do is an obedience retrieve, but I can't get her to hold the dumbbell no matter how hard I try :D) Your thread about the weight of dogs was interesting I am paranoid about weight. Try having a dog like Ava with a long coat, eeeek, so hard to tell. She is very lean, OH wants me to feed her more but I'm undecided whether she needs it. Clastic and I were squishing and prodding our dogs like mad the other day to see how bony they were I also forgot to say earlier, Genevieve and the cord :D Satch nibbled a cord once as well, but he didn't make it the whole way through!!
