Hilux Vs Crewman

Hi DOLers,

I need to get a bigger car for the boys (love my little corolla but its just too small).

I have ruled it down to either a manual; crewman or Hilux (2005 or newer). But cannot decide between the two.

Any help would be greatly appreciated in regards to size, fuel consumption, driving, and personal preference (and why).

I have two dobies, and plan to have a cage built in the back under the canopy.

Thank you in advance.

Kind Regards,

Jessca

My hubby had a Crewman S as a work vehicle (think it was 2005 ish). It was a bit of a guzzler in the fuel consumption stakes, but he's a sales rep and does about 1000Km/week! he LOVED it.

I found it ok to drive - bit long for my liking, but then i'd use it to nick up to the shops and back and found parking it in shopping centre car parks a tad challenging. Doesn't have much of a back seat either (if that's important to you). But still, nice to drive.

Better than the crappy falc station wagon he has now! drives like a boat...

hope that helps... :)

Which Crewman ? V8 or V6 ?.......Which Hilux, Turbo Diesel or V6 ?? 4x4 or 2wd ?

Hilux is one of the best, if not the best, in holding it's value. When it's time to sell, you'll be glad you bought the Hilux. Crewman isn''t good at resale.

When you're talking tray space, a dual cab hilux and the Crewman both have a small tray. If you go TD , you wll get far more kms/per L compared to the Crewman.

On the plus side for the Crewman, it will drive and feel more like a car compared to the Hilux. It will also have more get up and go.

Reliabiity- Hilux again, but a 2005 + Crewman should be reliable ( one would hope )

There's plenty of for and against for both.

I have neither but have friends who do & my biggest issue with both is getting the dogs in the back with the tray in the way,

Often the crates are at the back & by the time the dogs are placed up & you leab in to lock the crates it can be quite a hard task

I use to work for Holden in the service department as a Service Advisor and unfortunatly the commodores have alot of issues. I would make sure you check that any tech lines and recalls have been done on it. At one stage the new VE had 6 recalls out before it reached the sale yards.

The VZ which is from roughly 2005-2007 were a better model but I would make sure you get a series 2 as they got rid of most of the kinks by then

I personally would go for the Hilux over a crewman

Just my opinion thou.

HAPPY CAR SHOPPING

I am currently driving a VZ SS Crewman as a work car, and dont pay for petrol.

I cannot believe how much fuel it goes through, and would not own one if I had to pay for the fuel.

I love driving the 6 litre V8 as most guys would

But there is no room in the back.

If I take my kids, 9 and 11 - I have to move the seat forward to give them room and I feel like I am sitting over the steering wheel.

I have often thought of taking the lid off and seeing if my boys would hop in the tray, but have never liked the idea of having dogs in the back of a ute.

That is why I have kept my Nissan Patrol 4x4 so I can take the dogs where ever they need to go.

So if it was me I would choose a Hilux over the Crewman if I was forking out $$

Just My Opinion.

Good Luck With What You Choose

Thanks every one.

Rottylover01: It would be a V6 crewman and Hilux. I am aiming for turbo diesel, 2wd. Age wise both would be 2005 or newer.

Gilypoo: Didn't think of that, thanks.

Ashley: thats the main reason I am debating between the two, fuel. I knew they drank a bit but i didn't realise it was that bad.

Thank you again every one. I think It'll be a Hilux :) now to find one....

Hi, we have a Crewman Storm (S). We purchased it new 2005. V6. Never again. Absolute **** box.

If we had our time again, and we had to have the same car, we would have bought the 8. Better fuel economy and goes better. This thing has no guts. They are just way too heavy for the V6. We had a canopy put on the back. It has such poor visibilty for reversing etc, and we have had leaking issues with the canopy.

We think the dif has gone in it now and there is some sort of weird electrical fault that always plagues the locking and alarm, but none of the specialists can find it.

There is no leg room in the back. The car in our opinion is a big joke and we seriously wish we never bought it. Whenever we go anywhere, we take my old BA Falcon wagon and love it. Better fuel economy, goes faster and harder and quicker pick up.

If it was me and your 2 options were it, I would go the Hilux.

Personally I would go the Hilux, my hubby has a Toyota Workmate '05 (manual) which he uses for work & for when we go to shows.

Good on fuel, drives heaps better now that we pimped his wheels :dancingelephant::happydance2::cooldance: he wishes that he had the auto

though as he gets sick of changing gears but other then that he loves it. We were looking at the SS ute (VE) as we have the

sedan, but he opted for the Toyota as he said they get more milage outta the motors & the motors last alot longer.

Good luck in your search

Go the Hilux, but make sure you have a canopy on the back.. I have a 4x4 Diesel Colorado and am now saving up to get a canopy as it's basically useless for the dogs without one.

Toyota is more reliable than Holden.. I'd go a hilux over a crewman.

Also the high driving position of the utes is awesome and the Hilux is even higher than mine

I purchased a new Toyota Hilux with a canopy back in '07 and am extremely happy with it. Great to drive, fantastic mechanically, great on fuel - a full tank gives me 500-600 kms. It is turbo diesel. Covers speed quite well too, you don't even know you are driving at a speed of 150kph which I found myself doing on the very odd occasion. Dogs have been trained to jump in the back of the canopy, no problem. Couldn't have hoped for a better car!

I can't thank you all enough.

You have just saved me from making a huge mistake in buying a crewman.

Thank you

Dyzney : I'm so sorry that you've had so mant problems with it

Thank you once again, you can always count on DOLers :)

if you do go the holden crewman make sure it is a manual v8 the 6's have no guts no glory. we loved ours to a tree jumped onto the road but yeah no room in the back except for kids. parking as well i found it diffiult as it is long but had no issues and was fine on fuel. we now have an auto and it guzzles fuel. hubby likes both though as has driven hiluxes for work and is thinking of getting one for next car
