kayla1 Posted June 2, 2012 Share Posted June 2, 2012 For those of you that vaccinate your dogs triennially with the core vaccines (or less frequently, or titre test instead), do you still get the annual kennel cough vaccination? kayla1 Posted June 2, 2012 Author Share Posted June 2, 2012 Yes I understand the general recommendation for KC is annually, but I'm curious as to why some people may not. :) My dogs do not get vaccinated (core vaccines) annually, however in the past I have maintained the annual KC vaccine because of foster dogs coming and going. I also don't do dog parks with him or regularly socialise him with dogs I don't know. Also he has allergies so I choose to limit the amount of immune stimulation he gets. I don't vaccinate also coz my dog has allergies and reacted badly to KC vaccine, hasn't had 1 since he was 10 weeks and he is now 3. I socialist him a lot andhe has never had KC, where my younger dog who has had KC vac has had KC twice!! InspectorRex Posted June 2, 2012 Share Posted June 2, 2012 yes I vaccinate every 3 years(Nobivac) for Distemper/Hepatitis/Parvo and annually the intra-nasal Kennel Cough Vaccine. I don't do the injectable Kennel Cough Vaccine as 1 of mine had a nasty reaction at the site of the injection plus the Intra-nasal covers wider strains of KC. dancinbcs Posted June 2, 2012 Share Posted June 2, 2012 The only time I have ever used any KC vaccine is a few years ago when I went on a road trip and thought I may have to kennel them somewhere for a day. I had the nasal spray given to them and they were fine. I stopped using C5 over 20 years ago after a dog had a really bad reaction to the KC component and then got KC 3 months later anyway. Dogs that socialise a lot, say at shows, tend to build up a lot of natural resistance. The ones at risk are the pets that stay at home then suddenly have to go to a kennel. espinay2 Posted June 2, 2012 Share Posted June 2, 2012 No, as a rule I don't. The only time I have had KC here was an older dog who had been given the KC vaccine. The KC vaccine doesnt really last 12 months anyway - it has an efficacy of about 3 months, maybe 6. If you REALLY want to use it, IMO best bet is to get it not long before the dog goes in for Boarding etc rather than on an annual schedule. It's unlikely my dogs will be kennelled so that's not really an issue. espinay2 - that's really interesting, I remember reading 6 mths somewhere but didn't know it could be as few as 3 mths.
