Grass Seed In Parotid Salivary Gland?

I received an email from one of my fabulous puppy buyers last night regarding a 4.5 month old male Australian Shepherd puppy.

If anybody has any information, experiences or advice for me to offer back to her I would very much appreciate it.

Thankyou.

I was wondering if you may do me a favour.

On Sunday I noticed a lump, about large marble size on his neck - below and at end of mouth. We took him to our local vet yesterday ( and it had grown in size by then ). It was identified as an abscess and she shaved him to take a sample but he freaked at the shaver so we opted to have it done by local today. Unfortunately by this afternoon the swelling was so big the skin had started to blacken so he had a general. We found the worst. He had an incredibly small grass seed - about 3 mml max. - in the middle of his parotid salivary gland which had a small rupture. The swelling was the gland which was encased in a cyst. The rupture was sewn, almost cup of pus drained and he has come home on antibiotics and anti- inflammatories. The vet has never had this before and does not know what will happen but suspects the gland will have to be removed by a specialist due to the damage, reckons it has been in there for months. This would be a very complex operation due to proximity to facial nerves and carteroid artery. Aside from the cost, maybe few thousand, there is risk of survival and facial droop.

Could you please put it out there to your doggy forum for feedback ie has anyone had their dog requiring same- cost and outcome.

I would really appreciate that as I am so worried for him.

ETA: Puppy and Owner are located in Adelaide, SA if anyone can recommend vets etc.

Sounds awful. I had a dog with a saliva gland leaking which caused a laqrge swelling under the jaw, it didn't worry him but it didn't have those complications. Perhaps the Vet could get them an appointment with a specialist so they can get more information on possible outcomes. At least then they would know what they are facing as their Vet says he/she knows nothing about this type of thing.

I know its not to do with a dog that i have had that experience with , but I had one years ago, altho not caused by a grass seed !

They were worried about lancing it for the reason it might have caused some nerve damage to around that area , but luckily they decided to leave it a bit longer, and it actually burst on its own! the taste was the worse taste I have ever tasted!

They said it could come back, but it never has, that was over 15 years ago! Mine was under my tongue in that bit under it.. it was very painful and was getting difficult to swallow !
