I am looking to get the surgery done in Perth W.A. cheaper than I was quoted, which is $12,000 total for both legs. If anyone know's of a much cheaper veterinary surgeon please let me know.. Simply Grand Posted August 1, 2014 Share Posted August 1, 2014 (edited) Um, perhaps the owner of the dog needs to ask for recommendations and speak to surgeons themselves about their options... It's not just a case of one size fits all cheapest surgery. ETA. There are variables with patella issues. How old is the dog? What symptoms are showing? What grade is the luxation? Simply Grand Posted August 1, 2014 Share Posted August 1, 2014 (edited) If it were my dog and I'd been quoted $12,000 I would be doing a whole lot more research than just who will do the surgery cheaper. How was LP diagnosed? What is the grade and nature of the luxation? Is the dog showing symptoms? How old is the dog - puppies can grow out of it, is it really beneficial to subject an old dog to surgery and recovery? Is management rather than surgery an option? If surgery is necessary how will it be done, one at a time or both at once? Recovery time? Consequences of the surgery? I admire you trying to help but this is why I say the dog's owner really needs to do this research themselves. ness Posted August 1, 2014 Share Posted August 1, 2014 (edited) $12,000 sounds like a lot to me for a patella repair especially based on the quotes I got for repairing one knee by the specialist centre here. Get your friend to inquire where I suggested. Definitely a reputable place and I am sure its not going to be $12,000 to repair. Unless its a small lap size dog normally the soonest you can do back to back patella repairs is 8 weeks - once bone healing has happened. Regarding grading - grade 1 you normally wouldn't do surgery, grade 2 is borderline and depends how badly the dog is bothered by it was to whether you would do surgery. Recovery is your standard orthopaedic surgery 8 weeks of fairly strict rest, then gradually rebuilding and return to normal activity. RiverStar-Aura Posted August 1, 2014 Share Posted August 1, 2014 (edited) I agree Yonjuro. What I don't understand is if the dog's owner is so unhappy with the quote, why is he not 'shopping around'? Wouldn't that be your first port of call? Most people wont buy something expensive without getting second, third or even fourth opinions and a double LP surgery would be no different to me. Having said that, if the surgery has been 100% deemed as being necessary, then I'll pay whatever it takes to make sure my dog(s) get the best care possible. Edit: unfortunately these kinds of costs for surgeries can be required within a dog's life and if he isn't happy with having to pay out money, then perhaps he should've thought twice before buying a dog. Your post tells us nothing factual on which to even guesstimate a cost . Vet costs can depend on all sorts of things dog SIZE Vet or specialist Vet clinic or hospital extra test needed the level of damage to the knees what exact procedure is to be done ..(yes, there is more than one way to repair this condition) etc etc ..... $ 12,000 is a LOT of money - and to help your friend - more info would be most useful. That's all .... no argument - just the way this forum operates ..we try & give answers /help based on as many facts as we can...
