JulesP Posted August 13, 2014 Share Posted August 13, 2014 (edited) Amber came into season about 7 weeks ago and still has a very light bloody discharge. She normally has quite long seasons and her discharge stays bloody throughout them. She is super well at the moment. Has even put some weight on. Went to the vets today. The discharge has a tiny bit of bacteria in it but nothing very tragic. They took bloods and put her on a course of antibiotics. It could be a very mild infection but as her temp is normal and she is really well I am a bit concerned about things like cysts or other reproductive issues. JulesP Posted August 13, 2014 Author Share Posted August 13, 2014 Fingers crossed the AB clear it up. My options with her are a bit limited The vet is calling the specialists to discuss desexing. No sign of pyo. I can't comment on discharge because she was a bitch that didn't bleed very much at the best of times. Perhaps an ultrasound to check for cystic ovaries? Her bloods were pretty good. The vet was very surprised considering her condition. So I am still freaked out. Even an ultrasound is a bit of a problem due to sedation. dancinbcs Posted August 23, 2014 Share Posted August 23, 2014 There is no need for sedation for an ultrasound. My vet has always done an ultrasound for any suspected pyo as routine. It does sound like she has a low grade uterine infection going on as discharge for that long is not normal. I had one girl finish her season and then 2-3 weeks later her son kept sniffing her as if she was in season and for the first time ever became really protective of her. She had a low grade uterine infection and the vet was astounded that we had picked it up so soon. I didn't notice any discharge but she was a very clean bitch, so I may have missed it. The only reason I worked out she had a problem was due to the dog who told me something wasn't right. It is going to be a hard call with Amber if the antibiotics don't work. I suppose you have to decide whether to risk surgery to desex her. Another option might be to take her over to Dr Ann Neville, the vet in Bentleigh for her opinion on using Chinese herbs to treat her. She managed to clear up an ongoing, reoccurring bladder infection in one of mine that we had battled with for about 2 years. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The vet specialists tried it and ended up having to sedate her. Think she had a bad experience with an xray at one place. Most people probably wouldn't even notice this discharge it is very light. I check her belly for fluid every night so noticed it. I think she is working herself up to a phantom as she is really hungry. Hopefully it is just a low grade infection but I would have thought the antibiotics would have kicked in by now. She continues to be very well. The best she has ever been actually.
