persephone
Poor little kid ... Owner fined $300 !! Is that all ? I think it should be a lot more . As for the dog - yes, I think euthanasia is the only option.
tdierikx
Quote "Margot’s mother Christina heard her screaming and ran over." While I agree that there is no excuse for the dog attacking the little girl, the above line in the article stands out... it implies that the child's mother (or any other adult) wasn't necessarily paying close attention to her child while they were in the dog park. Honestly, children should be closely monitored in such places, don't you think? I'm not a fan of young children running around in dog parks... too many opportunities for things like this to happen if/when adults aren't closely monitoring interactions with strange dogs. That said, $300 seems a very small fine for a dog actually causing harm/injury to a person... maybe there are facts we aren't being told in this story? One would think that at the very least the dog would have been impounded while investigations into the incident were taking place? T.

I agree about closely monitoring young children when there are dogs free running - dogs get excited and can show all sorts of behaviour. I also don't understand why the dog wasn't impounded... I thought it was standard for an attack on a human ?
Deeds
I usually leash my dogs (even in an off leash park)if there are children around. Because they are big dogs and could knock a child over. It's just easier to leash them and safer . If I had an American Staffy I would definitely leash it around children. I'd rather be safe than sorry.
Mairead
If the owner was (or once was) a young man who needed to prove himself with a guard dog, or owned stuff or wares for sale that he didn't want stolen, the dog may have not had any socialisation "because we don't want him to be friendly". If it starts destroying stuff because of insufficient exercise because it can't be walked on a lead because it's not trained or too strong, then the dog park is an option. It might have been son's or boyfriend's dog, but he's gone to "the big house", or is renting somewhere he can't have a dog. If that were the case then surely the fine would have been much larger, and the dog would have been seized and euthanised, don't you think? T.
