Recommendation for clippers

Hi.  I have an older RC Collie and grooming has become a bit of a situation. 

 

She is a heavily coated lady, and whilst healthy,  she is a tad unsteady on her feet and standing for long periods is hard for her.

 

So I was thinking of getting a good set of clippers and trimming of things like her undercarriage,  feathering on her front legs etc.  My logic is that it will reduce the amount of time she will need to be brushed for (plus these are the areas which need the most grooming ti keep neat and tangle free).

 

So - would appreciate peoples thoughts on the idea, and/or recommendations for a good set of clippers.

 

(I have always had her professionally groomed.  And whilst I can give her a light brush over, she has a quirk where she fights me [yet is great with others ]  normally that would not be a problem and I would just ignore her antics, but I want her to be stress free at her age).

I like and use Wahl clippers. to clip my Giant Schnauzers and BRT.  I've had them a long time so I can't tell you what model they are.  i much prefer the Wahl to the Oster clippers.

 

It might be a good idea to ask your groomers what clippers and what size blades they used on your dog.

I use Wahl clippers as well and have had them for years also. Never had a problem with them and seem to do a great job and easy to use.

Have a look at the Andis clippers they are a good ergonomic design and easy to handle, they generally come with a 10# blade which is good for armpits and tummy’s, you can use it on pants, feathers etc. if you skim the coat otherwise I would suggest getting a 30# blade and puting a plastic comb over the top of it in your desired length for those areas.

For an older, heavily coated Rough Collie, carefully trimming high-maintenance areas like the undercarriage and leg feathering can absolutely make upkeep easier without doing a full coat clip.

I’d avoid cheap pet store clippers; they struggle with dense double coats and can snag. Look for a quiet, professional-grade website set such as Andis or Wahl with detachable blades, plus a longer guard comb so you’re thinning, not shaving. Go slowly, keep sessions short, and let her lie down if that’s easier. Even small trims can make a big difference for both of you.
