Raw Food Source?

Recommended Posts

I have recently moved to WA from NSW with my two dogs (brought hubby along too!) and need some help finding food for the pups.

I home-cook for them and also give them raw bones. I used to buy meat from Petbarn in NSW and all was great. Now I buy pet chicken mince from Lennards and my one dog has had a runny tummy since day one. Can anyone tell me where I can get decent pet meat (that won't break the bank) as well as a good choice of bones of any variety? We live in Armadale.

Thanks in advance

Ann.

Well there is one near me...but not close to armadale. Do you know hillarys Marina? if you keep going past that..going north along the coast..there is one along there..not very long and gets very very busy but its good!

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for the info, I will try them this weekend. If you think of anyone else, please let me know!

I also wanted to find some doggy beaches, do you know of any offhand?

Thanks again

Ann.

Ann if you drive straight down the Leach highway to Fremantle. (looking at the sea front) follow a road towards your left, going south and there are dog beaches there. The City Farmers on High Road Willetton do not have much in the way of fresh dog food. They stock a heap of the dried stuff and some of the meaty rolls. I think you may have to chat up a local butcher :)

you guys are great, thanks a stack for the info. I know there's a City Farmers in Armadale but have not been to it yet as I'm finishing off some chicken mince from Lennards. I think I will certainly have a chat with my local butcher to see if they can help and will take a trip to O'Connor and visit the South Str Pet Supplies.

Thanks also for the beach info, the darlings love to swim so we'll have to take them. Hopefully they can get some play time in with other pups as well!

Have any of you been to Murdoch vet hospital? I believe they do titers (in an attempt to get away from vaccinating) and was wondering how expensive they are as opposed to normal vets.

Thanks again all, if you think of anything else WA-wise that might be useful I'd appreciate it if you'd share!

Ann.

I dont know how expensive Murdoch are but I know that my mum's bichon has chronic renal failure .. the usual vet they used said she had a few weeks to live .. with the help of murdoch she had 11 months extra of a happy life (and some medication!)

Murdoch Vet Hospital is based at Murdoch University which is a veterinary specialist .. they have amazing facilities

Soniq, thanks for the info...they sound really good. Maybe it's worth the extra 15 min drive and I should look at making them my regular vets.

My, so much to learn about a new place! :worship:

I guess we all have opinions of vets but i wouldnt take a dead dog to murdoch

For ordinary vet care neither would I Showdog. Their specialists are great, but you cannot see the same person each time you visit, and they are just training to be vets! I would go back to my old fave in Leederville, bit of a drag, but I know he is great :(

Chicko, we have been in Perth one month. We flew over with the dogs from Sydney.

Apart from not seeing the same vet twice, what other reasons do you have for not going to Murdoch? Excuse the question but I obviously want to make sure my dogs get the best care even if it is a routine visit.

The vet I saw in Armadale (one of five at this clinic) saw Casper for his first visit at their surgery. I discussed his epilepsy, allergies and current bad tummy with her and she didn't look him over once. They first and only time she paid him any attention was to draw blood for a thyroid test I asked for. I also discussed his diet and she didn't seem to know anything so I'm ready to try someone else!

i prefer not to go into detail about our reasons for not using them but put simply we drive past 4 vets murdoch included to our choice of vet .

There are plenty of good vets around in your area depending on which one you tried already.

Did you bring your dogs vet notes with you from NSW??as that would always be handy for any new vet you pick

If your dog has been referred to a specialist at Murdoch Uni Vet Hospital it will ALWAYS see that specialist unless there is a very good reason for that particular person being unavailable at the time that your appointment was made. The Specialist Vets all have their own individual appointment slots and it is quite possible to see the same one each time in the referral practice. In fact, one vet will not see another vet's client unless the other is unavailable for a specific reason, usually an emergency or the vet might in fact be ill..... they ARE human you know !!!!

In the General Practice Clinic (non-specialist facility), there is a rotation of Vets on Consults, just as there is with any other multi-Vet practice. It is possible to make an appointment with the Vet of your choice, as long as you are prepared to wait until the day that the G. P. Vet of your choice is rostered on ....... no different to many other Vet practices !!!!

The Veterinary Hospital is part of the Veterinary School and is responsible in part for the training of Final Year vet students. It is interesting to note that Murdoch University veterinary School has a reputation as being one of the best in the world. It has recently been given an accreditation by the US which has never previously been given to any Vet School in the southern hemisphere.

Each Vet will have a final year student working with them, and the vet will explain the details of the case to the student...... WITH the permission on the owner.

To say that they are "just training to be Vets" is quite wrong !!!!! A final year Vet student is never permitted to care for a patient without a qualified vet FIRST having consulted with the owner of the animal, then thoroughly examining the animal, ordering tests and examinations for that animal and, having worked out a treatment and care plan, discussed all options, costs and possible outcomes with the owner.

What is that old proverb...... you can please some of the people some of the time etc etc !!! Unfortunately, there will always be the occasional person who is not satisfied, however there are very, very many people who have animals that are alive and well today due to the care, compassion and enormous skills of the CURRENT vets and support staff at MUVH.

It is really important to have faith in your Vet..... but a Vet is not the building where that PERSON practices, nor the personalities of those who may have previously worked there !!!

You say that you are in Armadale.

You could try Railway Avenue Veterinary Hospital in Kelmscott. They have a good reputation too.

They also do lots of rescue work as well.

Wundahoo,

It is Railway Ave vet I went to. The vet I saw was very good in explaining things to me but I wasn't totally ecstatic with her...maybe I'm too fussy! As you say, not everyone will be happy with a certain vet or clinic but I guess it's worth hunting until I find the one I'm happy with.

As I plan to get my dogs titered and Murdoch is the place that does it, I guess I will form an impression first hand. Also, as you say, if I find a vet I like, I can always make my appointments with that one in the future.

Another reason I want to try them out is that apparently they are our local emergency vet. I reckon it would be handy if they already had us on their records.

Showdog - I brought my one dog's records from NSW. He's the one with reams of paperwork. My other dog goes once a year for a check up and shots!
